Find Your Perfect Hair Shade

A few tips to help you color with total confidence:

Skin Allergy Test - Madison Reed always recommends you do a sensitivity test before coloring your hair. At least 48 hours beforehand, mix 1 part Radiant Cream Color (a small squeeze) with 1.5 parts Conditioning Color Activator (a few drops). Use a cotton swab to apply a quarter-sized amount to a small patch of skin behind your ear or inside your elbow. Keep dry. Wait 48 hours. If there is no sign of change to the area, then you're ready to color. Always consult your physician if you have questions or concerns. If you've had a sensitivity to hair color in the past, you may be more likely to have a reaction.

Please see the instructions included in your Radiant Hair Color kit for the best application to achieve your desired results.

Tips and tricks from the experts - Wear a shirt or smock that buttons or zips up the front to make cleanup easy. Begin with dry, unwashed hair. The day after your last shampoo is best for coloring. Make sure hair is free of styling products as they coat hair and may block the color.

Total Color Processing Time = 35 minutes (or 45 minutes for maximum gray coverage)

Precautions: Everyone is different, and all permanent hair color contains ingredients which can cause an allergic reaction, which in rare cases, can be severe. Therefore, you must follow the precautions listed on the included instructions.

Didn't cover gray

By Tami E

from FORT WORTH, TX

Comments about Madison Reed Radiant Hair Color Kit:

The color is pretty and my hair is soft but it didn't completely cover my gray at the roots. I applied it to my roots and left on for 40 minutes then the rest of my hair for 5 minutes.

Liked the first color I ordered better. Grey coverage not too good. This color faded much quicker.

Hello Adam's Family

By Cyndi H

from SEATTLE, WA

Comments about Madison Reed Radiant Hair Color Kit:

I don't really know how to rate this color. I have been platinum for 2-3 years and wanted to go back to my natural color (medium to dark natural brown). I thought the "quiz" I took for recommendations would make that clear. Having gone lighter but never darker I had no idea the color would go so dark. It makes sense I suppose due to the damage of bleaching. (Hindsight). My hair was goth black and I was mortified. Luckily, I still had bleaching products and was able to bring it back to a brassy red. Which I also hate but I don't look like the undead. I'm now waiting for my box color to arrive today (didn't want to be in public). Hopefully, I will be socially acceptable in a few hours. Having to do it over I would have left this on for half the time. As it is, I have a short pixie and will likely get it shorter to start over. If I had long hair I would be crazy right now. There should be instructions for bleach customers ordering dark products. I will try again with another color and timing. I love the idea of this product and the autoship option.

Good natural product, deeper/brighter red bet

By Aileen J

from CUPERTINO, CA

Comments about Madison Reed Radiant Hair Color Kit:

Like that it is a natural product; not as rich a shade as I hoped. Who try another deeper red color next time.

Good

By Brenda M

from OCONOMOWOC, WI

Comments about Madison Reed Radiant Hair Color Kit:

Love the packaging and the color. However, no matter if I use salon color or a box by grey come through in three days. This was the case also with this product. I called and notified them that I wa not 100% happy but she just tried to sell me more products. She suggested to place foil around the hair line but that was it. I wish the color lasted longer for me and I would buy it again. I was a bit disappointed when I called the woman just tried to sell me more items.

The box and instruction were perfect. All needed items were included. However the color was dark, more like black instead of brown.

Love the color not how quick it fades

By Gina C

from CLARK, NJ

Comments about Madison Reed Radiant Hair Color Kit:

love the color but have to admit really dissappointed in how quickly the color fades at the roots~about 3 weeks....which is comparable to drug store brands. I'm willing to give this another try but if there still is fading at 3 weeks I'll go back to what I was using before at 1/2 the cost. Sorry.

  • Q:

I have my hair highlighted the old-fashioned way at my salon -- she pulls my hair through a frosting cap. I want to do the same thing at home and use the Madison Reed platinum color. Is the material packaged so that I can use it again at a later date when I repeat the process? (My hair is graying but naturally dingy-looking.)
Asked on 5/21/2018 by TeriGodMother from Houston, TX

      A:

      Hi Teri!

Madison Reed is formulated to be gentle and nourishing while keeping your hair's natural integrity in mind. Our formula is able to lighten up to two shades on natural, uncolored hair.

It sounds like your stylist has been using a product that is stronger than what Madison Reed can achieve to give you a platinum look. If you would like to see how light you are able to go with Madison Reed please take our Color Advisor Quiz, https://www.madison-reed.com/color-advisor-ulta

I would also like to mention that Madison Reed is an all over single-process color, although we offer multidimensional color it is an all over global shade. Sometimes in order to transition to an all over color from highlights, you will need to go to a professional colorist for the best results (unless you are looking to go darker).

If you are looking to divide your kit into two, simply mix half of the color with a half of the developer in a separate bowl, seal and store away the rest of the unmixed color.

      I hope this helps!

My stylist told me to get a #6 color. I don't know which of your products would fit this. Can you help me?

      A:

      Hi Linda!

You will find the shade names with the associated level (so for you Level 6) on each box at Ulta or online right underneath the Madison Reed title.

If you would like to further explore what tones we offer with each Level 6 shade I would suggest taking our Color Advisor Quiz!

      Hope this helps!

  • Q:

Should I purchase 2 kits if I have long hair?
Asked on 4/6/2018 by Summer from Connecticut

    1 answer

    • Brand Expert

      A:

Every Madison Reed Color Kit comes with about 4OZ of color per box once mixed. If your hair is extra long or thick, one tube of our regular color might not be enough. Since you mentioned you have very long hair I would recommend getting two boxes! You definitely want to ensure you have enough product for complete saturation.

  • Q:

I have dark brown hair with beige highlights but in tired of the gray but i would like a hair color that is lighter then my normal hair which is dark brown!
Asked on 3/23/2018 by tina from saint cloud florida

    • Brand Expert

      A:

      Hi Tina!

You may want to take our Color Quiz to see what options you may have,

      https://www.madison-reed.com/color-advisor-ulta

Madison Reed is formulated to be gentle and nourishing while keeping your hair's natural integrity in mind. That's why we are only able to lift two levels on natural, uncolored hair and cannot lift or lighten previously colored hair to create a highlighted or lightened result. This is a process that normally takes place in a salon where stronger products are used by professionals to lighten the previously colored areas of the hair.

      I hope this helps!

Curious if I could go from using Napoli (as I have for months) to this without much or an issue?! My color
Grows out from Napoli a bit reddish (natural auburn. Yuck lol).

    • Brand Expert

      A:

      Hello,

I'm so sorry I'm not able to see the exact color you are referring to, but I can say you can absolutely switch to a new shade with Madison Reed. That being said with all permanent hair color, you can really only with colors at the same level, so for you a level 5, or go darker!

You can also retake the Color Advisor to see what you will be able to achieve when switching! If you are concerned about warmth, be sure to select Ash/Violet in the quiz for tone. This will help to neutralize any unwanted auburn tone.

      I hope this helps!

  • Q:

After years of coloring my hair at home, I actually tried a strand test before using Madison Reed. I left it on for 45 minutes, thinking it would dry (how else can I tell what it will look like?) but it was just dark and stiff. Then I actualily rinsed it out, blow dried it and clipped it into my hair. As many reviews warned, it was darker than my original color and the grey wasn't changed. My question is— can I return the rest of the kit?

      Hi Melinda,

I'm sorry to hear that the color chosen ended up being too dark on your strand test! All Ulta stores have a return policy that differs between stores. You may want to call the store you purchased from to see what your options are. If you haven't already, you may want to take our color quiz to see what color may be a better fit for you!

      Hello,

      You can absolutely mix colors!

Each Madison Reed shade is formulated to be multi-tonal, so mixing isn't necessary but we definitely do not discourage mixing shades if you would like. You can also take our Color Advisor to find the perfect shade that for you!
