A few tips to help you color with total confidence:
Skin Allergy Test - Madison Reed always recommends you do a sensitivity test before coloring your hair. At least 48 hours beforehand, mix 1 part Radiant Cream Color (a small squeeze) with 1.5 parts Conditioning Color Activator (a few drops). Use a cotton swab to apply a quarter-sized amount to a small patch of skin behind your ear or inside your elbow. Keep dry. Wait 48 hours. If there is no sign of change to the area, then you're ready to color. Always consult your physician if you have questions or concerns. If you've had a sensitivity to hair color in the past, you may be more likely to have a reaction.
Please see the instructions included in your Radiant Hair Color kit for the best application to achieve your desired results.
Tips and tricks from the experts - Wear a shirt or smock that buttons or zips up the front to make cleanup easy. Begin with dry, unwashed hair. The day after your last shampoo is best for coloring. Make sure hair is free of styling products as they coat hair and may block the color.
Total Color Processing Time = 35 minutes (or 45 minutes for maximum gray coverage)

I have grown out light blonde highlights with light brown roots showing. Would this be okay to use on my hair for a brown shade? The underneath of my hair has some reddish tones
- Asked by Lex
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationHello! We’d love to help you with this hair color journey. This will be a two-step coloring process to gorgeous results. When going lighter in color, tone and pigment are removed from the hair. In order to go darker, those tones and pigments need to be reintroduced back into the hair in order for maximum tonal result and color longevity. We suggest you add warmth back into your hair with our Amaretto Gloss. For the application, we'd recommend applying this gloss first over the previous lighter sections. Let the Gloss process for 25 minutes. After that, rinse and shampoo the gloss out. Once your hair is dry, you can apply the new shade. Was this answer helpful to you
- Q
does the product have developer or anything to lighten the hair? going from a darker brown to light/medium
- Asked by kaylee
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationHello! Like most permanent color, our color is able to lift 1-2 shades lighter on natural, non-color treated hair. If going much lighter than your natural, or if your hair is previously colored, you will need to have your hair lightened professionally. Was this answer helpful to you

I absolutely love 6NGV Tuscany Brown, but right around the frame of my face, the grays come back in 2 days, every time! In between coloring, I use the Madison Reed powder to cover my grays. But, it gets annoying, especially because I know the actual hair color kit should last longer than 2 days around my face! I can't use the special shampoo/conditioner, so what should I be doing differently?
- Asked by Amy7738
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationHello! If you are not already using a bowl and brush to apply, we do recommend applying with one for better gray coverage. The color can also be processed on the new growth up to 55 minutes. Was this answer helpful to you

I have dark brown hair currently that was dyed about two months ago. My natural color is a medium to lighter brown and my hair generally soaks up due really well and then doesn't fade for a long time. My hair does have a lot of old dye in it currently but I was hoping for a less damaging at home color option to lighten it up while I grow it out. Would using one of the lighter colors like dark blonde blend in and help lighten my hair or will I just get really weird colors?
- Asked by Anahi
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationUsing a lighter color over hair that’s already been colored won’t make the ends lighter—it will actually make them appear darker. This can also cause what we call “hot roots,” where the new growth looks brighter or warmer than the rest of your hair. Permanent color doesn’t have the ability to lift or lighten previously colored hair; only color remover or bleach can do that safely. Was this answer helpful to you

Can I use this over my whole head?? I dont due my hair very often. Last time i dyed my hair was about 4 months ago. I usually dye my hair twice a year at most. I dont want to get the gloss because I dont like adding consistent color to my hair. So would using this on my whole head be damaging still?
- Asked by AA
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationYou can absolutely use our color to cover your entire head; however, depending on the length and thickness of your hair, you may need a second kit to ensure full coverage. Please note that processing times will vary slightly for a full-head application. We recommend applying the color to your roots first and allowing it to process for the full recommended time. For the mid-lengths and ends (previously colored hair), apply the color during the final 5–10 minutes of processing time. This helps refresh the color while avoiding over-depositing, which can cause the ends to appear too dark. If you have any additional questions or would like help determining how many kits you’ll need, feel free to reach out—we’re happy to assist! Was this answer helpful to you

I have naturally dark brown hair but have had it colored black for years.I've been using MR Pescara or Postiano for several years. I would like red highlights. Which of the Red Shades would work best? Also any specific details I need to pass on. I'm going to have my hair highlighted by a professional hairdresser. Like Trieste Red which is a dark mahogany but I like the Rimini which is a dark garnett red. I notice it is not as good at coverage of gray but the color is gorgeous. The only color available locally right now is Trieste Red. What do you recommend?

BEAUTIFUL COLOR - But a bit dark
This color could not be more natural looking. I was previously coloring my hair a light brown/ash blonde and wanted to go a medium/light brown copper red. The preview photos of this color are all very different. I was hoping to turn out on the lighter side, but mine came out pretty dark, but it is o...

Never Again
My color quiz matched me with lighter shades of blonde but I opted for this (it was still one of my matches) because it was darker and I am always afraid of going too light at home. According to the swatch online it did not look too far off of my natural color so I didn't think anything would go wro...

Easy to use. Foolproof. I have been using this product for 2 years. Way cheaper than going to a salon to have my hair colored professionally. I always get compliments & no one knew anything different than me getting my hair colored professionally.
Defective 9NA Pisa Blonde
Hair Type Wavy Hair
I have been using Madison Reed's 9NA Pisa Blonde for several years. This was the first time I bought this hair dye from Ulta. I went to use it and it is bright red and won't mix. Unfortunately I bought 2 boxes. Beware if this is the color you plan to buy.

I lovethis product. Get compliments on my color all the time
Hair Type Very Curly Hair
Easy to use. Actually my husband applies it for me. Color lasts too!
Too dark
The color came out wayy darker than the color on the box and appeared more brown than red. I have naturally red hair so red tones typucally shine through on my hair but not with this. The color adheredd well and there wasnt a bad smell, but im not thrilled with the color.
