Most Helpful Positive Review Works Like a Dream
I had first gotten introduced to this line from a sample from maybe four or five years ago, tried it, loved it, and promptly forgotten it. But, having moved from CA to WI my showering habits quickly needed a re-vamp. The water here is hard, and my hair tangles like crazy. I couldn't afford to use to expensive salon brands because I am in grad school so money is tight. That being said, I was going through drugstore brands like water; the 5.89 'extreme treatment' conditioners and shampoo cleansers lasted a week in my hands.
So Amino Acid Shampoo comes into my life. Yes, it is a cleanser (judging by the contents and label) so it works if you live in an area with hard water and your hair just feels like gunk. Yes, I do have to wash my hair everyday, but I have oily hair, and always will. Nothing is going to change that. (I am multi-racial, with thin, very long, wavy hair, but I have A LOT OF HAIR that tangles like mad). So it cleans well in extreme hard water, leaves my hair detangled, rinses easily (a blessing for those with long hair) smells great, is a bit pricey for someone who usually buys store brands, but works just as well as the more expensive top of the line salon brands.
The bottom line is, if you are looking for a shampoo that works on a) tangles b) rinses easily c) oily hair d) thick or fine hair e) hard water build-up this stuff is for you.
Sidenote: Both my husband and I use it, and he doesn't find the scent to be too 'girly'. He has thick, curly hair, and a flakey scalp and finds the shampoo to work just as well for him.
That being said this shampoo isn't for everyone, we all have different hair-types, but if you have similar problems, this stuff is a lifesaver, even if you have to pay a bit more.
Most Helpful Critical Review Horrible Travel Packaging for a Good Shampoo
This review is of the 2.5 oz size since while I enjoy this product as an every day shampoo, the travel size product fails horribly. At first I thought it may be an anomaly that my Kiehls bottles frequently leaked on domestic business travel, but after recently returning from 8 weeks of international travel which included 10 separate days of flying, I can say with certainty the travel size Kiehls bottles are no good for checked baggage airline travel.
With a shower kit housing more than a dozen shampoos, face washes, creams, etc. the only bottles that leaked any during my travels were my Kiehls Creme deCorpa lotion and my Kiehls travel size shampoo. I even tried pushing air out of the bottle before the trip to give it room to expand to no avail. The only thing that prevents getting the rest of your suitcase full of lotion and shampoo is to put the Kiehls bottles in plastic baggies. While that works if the baggie is big enough and sealed, you waste the product that escapes and have to spend time cleaning out the baggie to use it for the next flight.
Not sure why Kiehls products leak when other high-end brands don't.
Bottom line: the shampoo is great but don't waste your money on Kiehls expensive travel sized bottle; buy a cheap travel bottle and use that instead.

Shampoo is great but was delivered in a bag not a box so cap was damaged and part of the shampoo spilt out in bag. I reported issue to Ulta and they reimbursed me. Very nice gesture. I hope they box mailed items in the future.
My Favorite Shampoo

I've been using this as my daily shampoo for over 12 years. I have baby fine hair that was platinum blonde for years, and been 100% natural for about the past 5-6 years. This shampoo worked great throughout. The biggest key is the conditioner used. This shampoo cleans my hair well, while still being gentle and not causing any breakage, where other shampoos left my fine hair feeling like it had a residue or caused breakage. I originally used the 133 formula conditioner, which was great. My hair remained soft and shiny and would style very well. Eventually, I tried the Amino Acid Conditioner when it was released, but that did not work for my hair at all. It felt almost stripped and was difficult to comb out. The Olive Fruit Oil was alright, but when the Sunflower Conditioner was released, it was a total game changer. My hair is silky soft and I get compliments everywhere I go. Although that conidtioner is made for color-treated hair, it works on all hair. My brother and my husband both use this combo too with rave reviews. I cannot recommend this product enough. There are a few Kiehl's items I use daily, but the Amino Acid Shampoo/Sunflower Conditioner combination is an absolute must!

Wanted to love it

I have fine hair that I've been struggling with and had high hopes that this was the golden ticket. Sorry to say i'm disappointed and still looking for a product that will hold and control the baby fine frizzy hairs around my hairline that stand out and make me sad. Its the coconut oil in the shampoo and conditioner that make my hair appear greasy and course to the touch after use. The frizzy hairs do seem to lie better, so it gets two stars for helping with that. I'll use the shampoo and conditioner on weekends, not anytime I'll be in public. I haven't used the leave in conditioner I purchased, I may try that with a different shampoo to see if that helps too.
Big disappointment & total waste of money

I bought this shampoo along with a friend of mine. We both soon realised how awful this is, ending up throwing it in the bin after just a few uses.
I've never had this experience with any other pricy shampoo, but it successfully managed to do these things, really fast:
It made my hair REALLY oily. By the end of the first week I was washing my hair every other day. And this is a vicious cycle, because as I was trying to skip a few more days, my hair & scalp kept getting annoyingly oily, itchy and with lots of dandruff. So I didn't have a choice but to wash very often - also time consuming.
It completely destroys hair texture. I have wavy thick hair, but thanks to this shampoo, my hair instantly turned lighter than a feather duster. It makes the hair really thin, frizzy and without volume. This is what both me & my friend first noticed. Even after I got a fresh cut and my hair was in full weight and volume, after the first wash I was back to square one. This was really a first for me regarding shampoos.
It has a weird smell. I'm not sure how to describe this, it's not horrible but definitely not pleasant. It was the first time I got the experience of washing my hair and not liking the smell of it afterwards.
All in all, I really tried to love Kiehl's, but it was a total dissappointment, sorry.

I have fine hair. I found this shampoo to not be heavy but made my hair so soft And shiny.
BEST SHAMPOO EVER

Your hair will be left feeling so nourished and healthy. Never using another shampoo or any other hair products aside from Keihls. I recommend using with the conditioner. Changed my life.
I recommend to everyone!

My scalp used to overly produce oil and I couldnt go more than a single day without putting up my greasy hair. Entire cans of dry shampoo couldnt help me. I have used this product for a year now and within a month I was able to go 4 days between washes with my hair down and train my hair to only need a wash twice a week. My hair is super healthy, strong, and the shiniest its ever been.
Unfortunately, not as described

In the image, the label states ?silicone free, paraben free?. Unfortunately, for the past couple years that has not been the case. The shampoo that comes in the mail no longer has those labels, but the image on the site still does. If you are looking for a Paraben and silicone free shampoo, don?t be fooled.
Will use it forever

It leaves my hair so soft and clean, shiny but not greasy. You need to try to believe.
So Far So Good

I love the smell! I forgot why I bought this shampoo lol but I think it was suggested for healthy scalp. I do get dandruff from time to time & have oily roots sometimes as well. After using this shampoo my hair & scalp feel very clean. It produces a lot of suds so it makes you feel like you are getting your hair washed at the salon. I haven't noticed any flakes or oily roots lately unless I go a few days without washing my hair so I guess it's working!
Great shampoo, bad packaging

I have been ordering this shampoo for a few years now. I have tried different shampoos but since I started using this one. I am sticking with this one.
I actually do feel a difference after using it, the only thing negative about this shampoo is the packaging it comes with. Almost every time I order it, it comes leaked or the pump gets damaged, so I have to keep pouring it in to other bottles. It's sad that a cheaper shampoo is more durable than this shampoo and that's why the overall rating is 3 stars
I would buy this product again

I've been using the thickening shampoo for years since it was highly recommended by GQ magazine. Why was it discontinued, and why is this Amino Acid Shampoo offered as a replacement? What makes this shampoo comparable?
Why -Ultimate thickening Shampoo

Sincerely cannot understand why a product which works well for so many of us be discontinued.
i request to advise an equivalent shampoo.
Please bring back the Ultimate Thickening Shampoo

This stuff is not the same and should not be considered an alternative to the holy grail of hair thickening agents. What a wonderful product Kiehls had in its Ultimate Thickening Shampoo product - please please please bring it back .
Please at least bring it back for sale at summerset collection in troy, Michigan

not a good substitute for the Ultimate Thickening Shampoo

Please, PLEASE. bring back your discontinued Ultimate Thickening Shampoo. The Amino Acid Shampoo, which your website recommends as a substitute, leaves my hair limp and lifeless.
6 years later, still the best
svarhall from Washington, DC
For the last 6 years, I've used the amino acid shampoo nearly daily. Of course I've used other shampoos in hotels, from samples, and occasionally I've bought one of those natural, package-free bars from the place in the mall, but I always go back to Kiehls, The amino acid shampoo is perfect for daily use. It leaves a clean, healthy, fluffy, sheen (not shiny, but natural light sheen). Doesn't over-volumize like some. Doesn't dry out hair at all. Doesn't become greasy quickly. I use a clay after to style, and the clean, moisturized hair gladly accepts the clay for style (doesn't absorb it). USE THIS SHAMPOO.
Best shampoo and conditioner.
mookieblaylock from brooklyn
I have tried every shampoo and conditioner around, I swear. Tea tree, stuff to straighten, curls, scalp renewal, volumizers- nothing compares. This was one of the 1st Kiehls products I tried after nearly 20 years of avoiding them. I am seriously in love. Nothing on the market makes my hair so soft. This will be in my shower for years to come. The only downside is- like many pointed out- it doesn't give the deepest clean. If I just ran or was at the beach- I'd typically give it a good rinse with something stronger but it won't leave my hair feeling like this stuff and I'll end up using it as soon as I can. Coconut smell is universal- all Kiehls products have the fresh, clean, natural smell.
I'll Definitely Use It Again!

I chose this shampoo as one of my samples in my last order. I was a little hesitant to use it at first since I color my hair and didn't want to strip the color. However, I had so much product in my hair that I just went for it, not knowing what to expect. I poured the entire contents on my head and (I figured) because of all the product in my hair, it didn't lather. So, instead of giving it a "fail" rating, I put a little of my own shampoo, which is a hair salon color-care shampoo that I've been using for years, and it created the perfect amount of lather. Well, I have to tell you that my hair never looked and felt this good in a long time. I've had long hair for years, and was considering cutting it because it was looking thin and scraggly no matter what I did. After reading some of the reviews though, I'm not sure if this will keep up, but I'm willing to give it a try and continue using this shampoo.
Mihaela from Arlington
One of the worst shampoo I have ever tried! It made my hair very oily and full of dandruff. It doesn't even smell nice, I don't know why it has so many good reviews. I like Kiehl's products, but with this shampoo I am very disappointed..
Krysi from undisclosed
I bought a large bottle of the AA shampoo and conditioner after discovering it at my gym. I've used about 1/2 of each before noticing that both products have lost their scent and shampoo doesn't lather. Rather disappointing to find that they have such a short life expectancy. Or maybe I got a bad batch.
love this product

Really like this stuff. Much more expensive than my old shampoo, but I really don't mind spending the extra cash; it's worth every penny, thank you
