Most Helpful Positive Review Cult classic for a reason!
I have medium/thick wavy, frizzy, long hair. As a student, I'm constantly on the go and don't have as much time or patience for hairstyling anymore. I'm trying to rehab my damaged hair, so air drying is best, but I end up with so much frizz. I love Surf Spray because I can spritz it on, and it defines my waves/shape, gives a cool matte hold/finish, and even tones down some of the frizz! And I'm able to avoid any heat styling and still achieve a look. I've noticed that it has a more measurable effect on shorter styles. When I first bought it, I had hair just past my shoulders, and it reallyyy brought out the waves, the layers, and added some beachy volume. Now my hair has grown much longer and heavier, so the effect is a little less, but still very nice nonetheless. This is great for creating cool, edgy updos as well, as the spray will give a good texture to work with, but will also help hold the style in place for a long time.
Don't spray too much in one area, you can always go back and add more. I like to spray it on damp hair, because then even if I did over-apply on one section, air drying will help soften the use of too much product. I've also noticed that you can bring out more of your hair's shape when you spray it on damp hair versus dry hair. I avoid putting too much on the root area, unless I want one spritz to try to encourage a lot of volume that day.
The only, smallest critique I have of this product is that the span of the spray is a bit wide, which took some getting use to, as the first time I aimed it at my hair, I ended up spraying half on my face because the nozzle covers such a large area. Over time you'll get used to it and learn how far away and where to hold your hand so you can direct the spritz right where you need it!
I tried this on my friend with straight hair, and it encouraged a little waving, but overall gave her a messy/sexy texturized look, which was good because she has extremely fine hair, though I would not expect this product to create waves in straight hair if you have absolutely none.
Overall incredible product! (And cool bottle design on top of everything else.)
Most Helpful Critical Review nice but not as good as (un)dressing creme
This does indeed give you beachy hair. Not a fan of the gritty, dirty feeling. I have to use a lot to hold a style.
I tried surf spray for a while but now only use (un)dressing creme, which is more effective and not at all hairspray-crunchy.

I have really fine hair and this product is magic ! Gives my hair just the body it needs. There's no product feel or look in your hair. It just makes your hair have body - so it doesn't fall flat.
Expensive, but excellent.

I have fine 2B hair (high porosity, medium density, bleached).
A good salt spray is KEY to my hair routine because my roots tend to be like sad limp noodles while the rest of my hair waves and curls. My favorite spray was from an indie company that no longer makes it.
This is my new favorite. The bottle itself produces a nice, fine mist so it's easy to control the amount going into your hair. The product is very lightweight, so it may not be a good fit for those with thicker strands, but for my hair it's wonderful. The volume I get is subtle and looks natural. I don't notice any odd textures unless I apply it too heavily in one area (this is consistent with other salt sprays I've tried).
My only complaint is the price point. This is the most expensive salt spray I've tried and I've been able to get equally good results from indie products at a much lower price. So idk if I can justify purchasing more of this even though I love it.
A staple for my hair!

I use this product between washings to lift and soften my waves/curls.
Very useful product!
Janie from Baton Rouge
I give it 4 stars because it worked for me only after using it in conjunction with a hair waver. If I use it alone, I get the weird texture that other reviews mention. I bought the small bottle just to try it because the waver I bought wouldn't hold the waves more than 30 minutes (I blame my fine, thin hair, not the waver). But use them together…I get the beachy waves I dreamt of! I just spritz it in damp hair, blow dry, then "crimp" it and I get the beautiful waves that I am looking for and they last all day.
I want to buy this stuff by the gallon

In the morning my curls are everywhere!! I spray my hair with water and then with Surf Spray!! It's like brand new soft wave curls!! Love love love this stuff
I live by this spray!
Amanda from Atlanta
Have used this for years and I still love it! I have naturally wavy hair but if I don't tame it for work our outings it looks frizzy and unkempt. This makes it look like I professionally curled it and tames it. I always get compliments. Could not recommend enough!
I ended up returning

I was excited for this product but unfortunately it didn't do anything for my hair. I will say my hair is very thick and weighted so I think the control wasn't enough. It didn't leave a super sticky feeling though which was nice.
The surf family is a must buy!!!
Mariaofva from Chesterfield, VA
I am not one to write reviews but feel I must regarding the surf family! I watched the YouTube video and bought the spray, the foam mouse, and the no blow dry. Following the video I use the no blow dry and then the surf spray...oh my gosh, first product that actually does bring out my natural waves and does not make my hair feel sticky nasty! Most stuff I buy that "is supposed to be great" I usually take back...not this line! I am in love with the products!
For that surfer girl look
binx from Texas
Use this after the shower, spray is easy, and I get that just-took-a-swim-in-the-ocean look.
Definitely sea salt
I love vacations from Emerald City
This product does make your hair feel like you've been at the beach. If you have ever been in ocean water, it is salty and does leave your hair feeling a bit dry but creates texture (that beachy hair look). I feel that it also adds volume. It does not add a sticky feeling but I will agree with other reviews that it can leave the hair feeling dry.
Good for curls

Have used it for several years

I been using B&B Products for 10+ years and I am very unsure on this one. To me it looks and feels like I just misted my hair with water.Did nothing. I will stick with the Surf Blowdry Foam Spray. I get better results if I spray it all over my hair instead of just the roots.
Great product, wasteful packaging!
KW from Michigan
Love this product for a soft wavy look, with a very pleasant fragrance! The only thing bad I will say about any Bumble and Bumble is they have a very wasteful way of getting their products to you. See photo for reference.
I would buy this product again

Nothing to say. All good.
Smells Great and Works
crystalannamarie from Augusta, GA
My hair is naturally frizzy and wavy without styling. Not the pretty curls that you get without styling. This spray plus the surf styling leave in gives me gorgeous beachy waves and curls. They also enhance my waves without being stiff and hard to brush out like past products I've used.
Brit from Texas
This product is terrible it doesn't do what it claims. The smell is also really bad.
Fabulous beach hair
Shlee from Salt Lake City, IT
I have fairly thin hair and this works great to give to some body. I spray on wet hair and use a diffuser to really add those beach curls. I took it on my cruise and just let my hair air dry and it was an easy way to look great with minimal effort!
I wont buy any other this is the best for that beach look ha
Sa from NJ
I have naturally curly hair that looks a little straggly without product when ever don't want to straighten hair don't have time I use this product and leave house wet my hair looks great .Also great when on vacation and on beach all day. Caught in the rain no prob add a little of this and look great again.
emily c from chico california
smells great perfect for natural waves without any heat styling
Not great for long hair, worked for medium length
Skye from Atlanta, GA
I have medium/fine, slightly wavy hair that I'm always trying to volumize. I bought this when my hair was long, and it kinda ended up in this sloppy, tangled mess. I cut my hair to collarbone length with a little bit of texture and decided to try it again. Definitely noticed a difference - it gave me the fluffy, slightly dishelved hair I was trying for. Glad I didn't throw it out before then! It does make your hair feel a little stiff, but not enough to be obvious or bother me.
Didn't work for me
Butterflywhisperer from NC
I really wanted to love this, but it leaves my hair so dried out and sticky...even if I just use a little bit. I love most B & B products; just not this one.
I love this but...
La Donna from Austin, TX
I love this but the bottle is so small for the price. Also, sometimes I have to use a lot. I have oily hair that's fine but I have a lot hair. My hair is naturally straight/slightly wavy. I use it when I get it if the shower, quick towel dry and spritz and scrunch. Sometimes I have to use more bc where I live is very humid.
Ashley from Ohio
I prefer using this on air dried air, you only need a small amount. I spray at roots and ends and scrunch and fluff my hair and it gives me a lot of volume and brings out the natural wave in my hair. I only noticed a pleasant light scent. It is expensive for the amount but it works very well.
Shirley from Seattle
Adds volume and waves. Fresh fragrance.
After washing my hair, I towel dry and then spritz with the Surf Spray for a wavy ready to go summer beach style! Love it!
Used this for years
Stef S from FL
Have very straight hair. I use this primarily after my hair is dry. I spray a little in my hand and spread it underneath (flip hair over), along crown, and near part. Later I use the the Bumble texture for additional lift. For some reason whenever I try products other than bumble I don't like them; I always go back to bumble. I will say I have to be careful bc if I use too much makes my hair oily.
