I bought this and then looked at it and thought there is no way my fine hair is going to have beautiful curls with that. Wow, was I wrong! I strongly suggest watching some videos online of the various ways people are using this. I did and I have tweaked my process based on what I learned. My hair is... not color treated or permed. I have 1A hair€"a lot of hair, but it's very fine and straight. It's about bra strap length when straight and has long loose layers. Here is what I do:This works best on freshly washed hair that is 95% dry. Definitely DO NOT use this heatless curler with wet hair. On my towel dried hair I use a small amount of leave-in conditioner focused on the ends and lower 1/3 of the length. A few minutes later I add volumizing mousse. I blow dry with my head mostly upside down and try to stop just before it is completely dry. This is my process, but if you have time you could let your hair air dry. Then I take my wet brush and gently smooth my hair. This step is important. The key to a uniform curl is to start with smooth hair. This also helps prevent knots from forming during the day. Next, I take my water spray bottle and just spritz my hair lightly. It should not feel or look wet. The slight dampness will really help the curl set when it dries and should easily dry fully by morning. With the rod thing fully straight I take my fringe section (what would be bangs if I had them) and roll it around the very center of this thing. Make sure the length of the rod is equal on both sides. That will be important when you start wrapping. Rolling away from my face, I roll my fringe down fairly tight around this thing, and clamp it with a large hair clip. This prevents the curling rod thing from getting pushed up while I sleep which will pull some of my hair loose so it doesn't get a good curl. This also holds the thing in place while I wrap the first side. And it gives the front top of my hair, some height.Next I divide my remaining hair into two sections by parting it down the center to include all the way down the back. You can also do a jagged part if you like. I clip off one side and wrap the other side using this process: the rod should be in an upside down U shape over your head and sitting about where you would wear a headband. Grab a 1€_x009d_ section of hair from the top front and wrap it one full turn around the rod€"over the top around the underside so that strand is back to the same side of the rod where it started. Now grab the next 1€_x009d_ section of your hair and add it to the section in your hand. Wrap it the same way-over the rod, around the underside so it's back where it started. You're not braiding. Every time you start to wrap a strand around the rod, the strand should start from in front of the rod. You're never starting to wrap from behind the rod. All the curls will wrap the same direction, away from your face. Keep repeating the process. It's important to keep the hair smooth as you wrap, and try to pick up even sections of about the same size. It's also important that the ends of the rod thing point a little behind you as you wrap sections around it. You don't want the ends of it pointing straight down or forward because that will negatively impact the way your curls lay when you take it out. By the time you get to the base of your ear, you should have all the sections from that side pulled into the hair strand you're wrapping so that you're finishing that side by just wrapping that same strand around and around the rod the rest of the way down without pulling in more sections. If you're still pulling in sections when you get past your ear, you won't have an even curl and those sections won't curl as well. If that happens, start over and grab slightly bigger sections of hair. Try to wrap each section just below the section you did before so the strands of hair don't overlap and don't have big gaps in between them. As you're grabbing sections of hair, they will be longer than the section in your hand. Twist the longer and shorter sections together a little as you wrap so that the little end pieces don't stick out too much. Once you have no more sections to pull in and you have wrapped that entire strand all the way to the ends, secure it to the rod thing with a no damage hair elastic. The satin scrunchie won't hold my baby fine hair so I use one of the little clear elastics that don't get tangled in your hair. Then I wrap the satin scrunchy over the top of that. You can also fold the end of the rod up over the end of your hair if your hair isn't long enough to cover the whole side of the rod. Then wrap the hair elastic around the folded rod end. This will protect the ends of your hair from damage.Now do the other side of your head the exact same way. When you're finished, you can gently grab the two ends of the rod and wrap them around the back of your head at the base of your skull. Take a scarf and wrap it around your head starting at the back of your head so you're tying it in a knot right behind the hair clip on top of your head in front. this helps to hold the two ends of the rod flat at the base of your skull and also keeps you from rubbing and pulling the hair out from around the rod while you sleep. The scarf should follow the rod around your head and you'll tie the knot behind the clip. It took a few minutes to get used to it but I am able to sleep very comfortably using this method.This sounds harder than it is. It will be awkward the first time you do it but by the second or third time you'll be much more comfortable. From the time I get finished drying my hair, this process takes me about 7 to 10 minutes. In the morning take out the hair clip and elastics and gently shake the rod thing out of your hair. Avoid pulling you hair off of it. I gently separate my curls with my fingers as I'm getting ready. I don't brush or comb. It will be tight at first but will slowly fall into beautiful curls. The next 2 to 3 nights I sleep with my hair in a high twisted bun. These curls last for days with very little touch up. By day 3 I have big beautiful loose waves.
