Most Helpful Positive Review Seems to work
I really hesitated to buy this because of the price and I wasn't sure how it would work but Ulta has such a libral return policy I thought I would try it. I used this when my hair had a lot of gray roots and I should have been using a box color like I usually do so this was a pretty tough test of the product. I washed my hair first and then applied the "stain". I used a lot it seemed and concentrated on my most gray areas. I left it in 2 hours because I wanted maximum color. My hands were stained with the warm brown color and did not come clean with soap and water. I used sink cleaner with bleach and it took the stain right off. I rinsed the product out after 2 hours (cleaned my house while it was processing), applied my normal stying products and blow dried my hair. My hair is very thick and coarse and does not usually hold color well. My hair came out feeling very silky and soft. I could tell a difference in color too. My hair seemed more of a rich tone. I would say this product is like a deep conditioner with a color stain. It did not totally cover my gray but blended it pretty well. Not sure how long it will last as I just used this product.
Most Helpful Critical Review Does not work!
Discovered this at Ulta by accident. I was excited about this product. I'm getting tired of root touch ups every 2 weeks. Well it did nothing. I left it on for 40 mins. As I was waiting, it looked like my roots were turning golden brown. I needed darker, but I would have been fine with it. Washed it out and was really disappointed. Did NOTHING!!! Returning!!!

The color is a bit patchy and the dark blonde pulled a little warm but I like it. I think if you're looking for a very subtle change it is great. I have bleached hair so I'm sure that helped with it showing up l.
I'm not sure why all the negative reviews unless…..

I'm not sure why all the negative reviews unless you just have no clue how to apply or you've picked out your wrong color. This product is amazing. Highly highly recommend. I have red burgundy hair that tends to fade fairly quickly. This maintains my color in between salon visits. I think the key is length of time left on to develop. I leave mine on 2-3 hours at a time and produces a beautiful rich color that lasts and lasts.

I had a red balayage that I got tired of and decided to cover up with black box dye. I dyed my hair twice and it just kept fading out quickly and my ends were getting dry. I decided to try this to avoid frying my hair and I've finally achieved the jet black look I had missed so much. Its pricey but worth it

This product did absolutely nothing for the color or texture of my hair. Definitely not worth the price tag.
Casey from New York
Bought this to darken up my platinum highlights. My hair is damaged, dry and brittle. My hair was so soft after use and darkened my highlight like I wanted. The only con was the light brown faded out to an orangey red tone.
Didn't do much.
Kathryn from New York Ny
Purchased hoping it would help to tone my dyed brown hair that has turned a bit brassy from the sun this summer. Left it on 20 minutes on towel dried hair and it did nothing other then leave it very soft and smooth.
Strawberry turned my blonde pink
Mama bear from Az
I have natural strawberry blonde hair, with highlights. In hopes to add a bit more red to my hair, i used this. It set for about 5-8 min.
My hair is now pink. Pink.
I've washed it 4 times, and it isn't fading like I'd hope. Help!
Jordy from San Diego CA
I have light brown, blondish hair naturally. I've been getting balayage for years. I spoke with an associate at Ulta and she recommended I try it. I decided to try this in light brown to try and tone down my grown out balayage. This stuff straight turned my hair an ugly deep reddish orange. I want my money back and I wish I could go back in time and put it back on the shelf.

This product is AMAZING. I had my hair colored at a Ulta salon and didn't love it (no fault of the stylist, I think we just weren't on the same page). Having just paid a lot of money I didn't want to spend the same amount to fix it, so decided to try the treatment. Coloring my own hair made me nervous but this seriously could not be easier. I use it every one or two weeks (1-2 hair washes) and it's bringing me back to my natural color. Also the shine from it is fabulous. Also I love Justin Anderson so I'm happy to support him
Did not work for me - all of it washed out right away
Hailey from Minnesota
I used this product as directed and left it on for 20 minutes. It all completely washed out and didnt even add a tint to my hair. I believe maybe using it on dry hair may work better than as directed by using the product on damp hair.
Refreshed my color and helped with my root greys
Bonnie from Horsham, pa
My hairdresser recommended I put it on my dry hair, instead of damp hair. Use gloves. I have fine shoulder length hair. The first time I used the auburn gloss, I didn't see results. I just used it again and left it on for 10 minutes and it colored beautifully. Got most of my greys. I will leave it on longer next time to see the difference. 3 minutes is not enough time to touch up root grey hair.
porous damaged hair
peytoo from wilmington
this is grailed honestly. i have damaged hair that is super porous and platinum. other dyes and toners have left it gray or purple in some areas and where the bleach has overlapped in my regrowth. this made everything basically one color and without damage. so glad I splurged on it so worth it.
Great but stains
Caitlin from Bloomfield, NJ
This stuff is amazing for covering my grays between hair appointments. Only drawback is it stains like crazy. My shower looked like a murder scene. Somehow it stains way worse than box color. Anyway, I just spray bleach and it goes away. worth it.
Works, but definitely by the clear gloss!
Gigi from florida
When I was over the highlights I had in my hair and couldn't go to the salon, I gave this a shot. It does 100% work as temporary fix. The brown shade does lean more red. Also, I would highly recommend purchasing the clear gloss to go with the color gloss that you purchase the color is pretty dull.
Saved my hair mistake!
CJ from Los Angeles
Silly me tried to bleach my hair on my own. Turned out WAYYYY too bright. The dark blonde gloss was the perfect color I was looking for and helped tone it down & bring back some warmth as well. I haven't washed my hair yet so idk how long it will last but this was a great product and I hope that it lasts a couple washes at least!
Turned my hair orange
Ashmoore58 from Tennessee
My natural hair is a level 6 and I had highlights that were pretty blonde but I wanted to tone them down a little. I got the dark blonde color in this gloss. It straight up turned my blonde hair orange. I tried using blue and purple shampoo and nothing worked. I ended up having to have it professionally fixed. If you have dark hair maybe it'll work fine but I wouldn't recommend using this on blonde hair.
Nice way to temporarily switch up your hair color
Dede from San jose, California
I have dark brown hair and wanted to see what I would look like with black hair without the commitment of getting it dyed so I tried this. The color looked very natural and washed out in roughly 3 washes. It's a great way to enhance your natural color.

Love this!!! An absolute must have if you have highlights/ balayage! I have Asian hair so it gets brassy and this product really helps tone down the orange. Application is easy and I leave it on for about two hours and rinse. My hair always feels so shiny and soft after. One bottle gets two uses for my long hair. Get this.
Salon in a bottle
Jaz from Tampa, FL
Color: Black -I love it and plan on buying more. At first I wasn't too sure. But after trying a second time it was a no brainer. I typically I go to salon for cut/color/gloss treatment. Which would be a total of $160 including tip. It became too much $$$. So I decided to try this and WOW. I literally look like I just stepped out of the salon. Ppl @ work even thought I just had a cut n color (in reality it's been 3mo since my last salon visit!) It's incredible. The smell is kind of rancid. But it doesn't take away from how the product performs. My hair color is revived and I didn't have to dye it. After blow drying and flat ironing, my hair is SILKY SMOOTH & SUPER SHINY! The bottle is pretty small. But I can get about 5 uses out of it. The bottle says to use every 2weeks. I do about every 2-3wks. And with the price compared to salon is still a deal.
I wash and deep condition my (naturally curly 3A)hair as usual and then apply this on damp hair. Squeezing as much water out as possible. And I comb and rub through to saturate, then apply a cheap plastic shower cap. I continue on w/ my shower and after 20min rinse out with cold water. And TA-DA! Way easier than taking the time to dye my hair myself. The only thing I'm going to salon for now is a hair cut. I can manage the rest now by myself ;)
This product is absolutely amazing!
JBN from SC
I have natural curly/coily hair that's colored, and about 90% gray. I bought this to touch up my gray roots in between color, and its purpose serves the best of both worlds. It conditions AND covers the gray! I'm floored by these great results.❤️
Absolutely LOVE this product

This product works amazing! I get my hair colored a strawberry blonde/copper color every few months but the color starts fading after a few washes, which gets frustrating because I spend so much money to get it colored. I decided to try this gloss and see if it could save me some $ by not having to go back to the salon every 2-3 months for touch ups, and omg it does the trick! I paired it with Joico red shampoo and used a masque after rinsing and my hair is SO smooth plus the color is almost completely restored (I did have it sit for 20 mins because I wanted a deep color). I would recommend this 100xs
I would by this again

It extends my color life. I use it around my hair line. It's expensive but how I use it it lasts a long time
Conditioner or Dye hmmmm!?
Priscilla from Northern California
At 61, I have a small amount of frizzy gray and my hair was looking boring. So here are the pros and cons:
Pros: I used the dark brown, left it on for half an hour and my hair looked gorgeous! Beautiful color, the conditioning soften the gray, didn't completely hide it, and so blended in. Looked healthy.
Cons: washed out in 2 washings. So the question…was it worth it for all the mess. Dye all over your hands etc. Next time I tried half black, half dark brown, left on for one hour with a plastic bag. Hoping this time the color would last longer. Nope!
So if you're going out and want to look extra nice, use it or use it as a conditioner that has a bonus color? Anyways do not expect it to last.
Tone is golden, not good for toning down brass
nicco from boston, ma
If you want to add dark golden blonde tone to your hair and do not need extra conditioning, this may work.
Product smells bad
AH from WV
Smells like fish and the smell won't go away even after washing with regular shampoo. Will definitely not purchase again. Dried my hair out too.
