I'm a redhead, but my hair has severely faded over the years so I'm left with a more flaxen color, which I figured oVertone would cover well. I ordered Teal Extreme (oVertone, please make a Teal color for Brown hair!) and decided to do a test strand first because I was concerned that the red left i...

    AWFUL

I've used the color depositing "Clenditioner" for years and always liked my results. I'd heard good things about overtone and bought two different colors during a sale. (espresso & scarlet Red - I mix them for a custom color) Unlike the Clenditioner, the label says to apply to dry hair. It recommends leaving it in for 25 min- give or take 5min. I can't recall if it was 20 or 25, but I followed the label. first, it stinks. It literally smells like those finger paints toddlers like to play with mixed with a bit of tea tree oil. BARF. Second, though I have pretty long hair, I had to use a little more than half a tub of both colors, so in other words one tub wouldn't have been enough. Third, it doesn't apply easily at all. It just sorta sits wherever you put it. There's no slip, so if you have curly hair (which I do) it's gonna be a nightmare to apply on dry curls. It's called a "Mask" so I mistakenly thought it would be somewhat conditioning and not too difficult to work thru my hair. It took FOREVER to rinse out. It left a disgusting residue feel on my hair, like a waxy,/oily buildup... and no, color deposits shouldn't feel like that. The other brands I've used certainly don't feel like that. After rinsing for an eternity, I washed with a regular shampoo and STILL my hair felt nasty. I washed a second time with a slightly stronger shampoo, and it just couldn't get that buildup off. I clarify my hair about every third washday, so this was definitely from the overtone. My curls dried looking a bit greasy and weighed down despite me using tried and true stylers & diffusing. within 2 days, my hair felt dried out yet greasy. Really gross. I have med to high porosity, low to medium density, fine to medium textured curls that fall several inches past my back bra band, and a soft to medium "finish"; my hair NEVER feels dry during do summers. It's typically a bit too soft and easily over conditioned. But I'm thinking that the freaking wax like buildup from this stuff basically suffocated my strands, not allowing conditioner to really penetrate the hair fiber. On top of all that, literally NO ONE even noticed I had done anything to my hair. When I tried to point it out people just looked mystified. I could tell, but barely. I've now had about 7 or 8 wash days and have been using a clarifying/chelating shampoo more than usual to try to get this garbage out of my hair, but I can still feel a little something in some spots. It's mostly noticeable if I have to be outside in the FL heat and humidity and start to sweat a little, it makes my roots feel sorta oily & gross when the sweat mixes with the buildup. My scalp is more on the dry side, so oiliness is something I've never dealt with before and I'm not a fan. I'm hoping when I wash my hair yet again tonight it will finally get the last bits of this HEINOUS product out of my strands... DO NOT RECOMMEND! There are WAY better options!

    Hair Type Very Curly Hair

I HATE this product. I stopped dying my hair a decade ago and have virgin hair. I've used another brand of color depositing conditioner and had fantastic results but I've been hearing about this overtone for years and decided to give it a try. I figured worst case scenario is it doesn't give noticeable results; it didn't even cross my mind that I could hate it. I have fairly long, medium-dark brown curly hair for reference. I purchased the espresso and scarlet red colors so I could customize my color. I was going for a color slightly deeper than my natural color, with hints of red, which is what I had always done with Clenditioner & it would always look great. But this stuff... As soon as I scooped up a blob of product I noticed it didn't really feel like conditioner in my hand. Idk how to describe it, but it just felt off. Almost like a texturizing paste. It has precisely zero slip and does not spread easily at all. I used about 2/3 of each jar, which for the price point, is ridiculous! My hair was very stiff with that gunk. I thought when I started rinsing it out there would be some semblance of slip since I'd be adding water to an alleged "mask" but I thought wrong. It took forever to rinse out and I couldn't get rid of the super waxy feeling on my strands. I double cleansed my hair like usual, but the nasty waxy feeling just wouldn't go away. Since then I've had 3 more wash days, one of which included a clarifying shampoo that's also chelating, and it STILL feels disgusting. Furthermore, the residue is blocking my conditioner from absorbing fully, causing my ends too feel very dry. It also is affecting my stylers from working properly. I hate it. Plus it took almost 2 tubs for one application?! Clenditioner is a little bit cheaper, but a way bigger value because I got a bunch of applications out of those products, and you could actually see a visible difference after using it, unlike this stuff that just barely shows up at all (literally no one in my life noticed I'd done anything) If you like stiff, crunchy ends and enjoy an almost sticky coating on your strands that won't wash off, you just might like this. If you're looking to spend about 50 bucks (if you have long hair, you'll need more than one tub to fully saturated your hair) on color depositing mask but would prefer it to not actually deposit color, this could be your holy grail.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend to a friend

    No Gray Coverage!

I bought this specifically to cover a few gray hairs I have started getting, but it did NOT cover gray hair at all. It does offer a natural color and is fairly easy to use, but it will not work on gray hairs.

I bought this to maintain the red highlights I have, as my salon red starts to fade I use this mask. Its really vibrant on top of lightened hair, very easy to use. Washes off hands well although I recommend gloves as it is quite red during application. I will be trying their other colors in the future.

I used to love Overtone. I used the red color in my brown hair about two years ago and it was great, so I wanted to try it again. Left it on for an entire hour and you cannot tell that I did anything to my hair. Absolute waste of money!!!!
