Follow these steps carefully to protect the mechanism:

1. Remove the original cap from the bottle.
2. Gently but firmly tighten the pump onto the bottle, making sure it is snug.
3. Now it is safe to press the pump.
4. Note that the pump has a "locked" position for when you're on the go. Be sure to unlock the pump before the first use.

To unlock, twist the top of the pump in the direction of the arrow.
To lock, twist in the opposite direction. You will feel when it settles into the locked position.
