Most Helpful Positive Review Amazing for textured hair!
First of all, this product IS NOT a regular shampoo, and so if you try to use it like one you won't be happy with the results. It's a co-wash and is meant for wavy and curly hair. It won't lather. Co-wash is something people who follow the "no-poo" (no shampoo) method of hair care use sometimes. This product doesn't have sulfates or other harsh detergents in it, which is exactly what textured hair people need! if you're a curly or wavy haired person who follows the no-poo method you'll probably love this stuff, I definitely do!!
Most Helpful Critical Review It's ok but doesn't moisturize my thick curly locks
I had a gift card for ulta that I got for Christmas last year and so I decided I would use it to buy a hair care product because I need something that will moisturize my hair and leave it less frizzy and so I read all the great reviews for this and so I thought I would give it a try. When I got it I decided to use it and when I first squeezed it out of the bottle, the smell of the product I didn't really like it has a stinky smell to it and it's kind of a gross smell and it makes your hair smell gross unless you had another type of good smelling moisturizer to it but it does moisturize your hair but it's not that great of a detangler because my hair is long and thick and it doesn't even detangle my hair all that well and my hair is still frizzy after using this stuff too. I kind of wish I didn't buy this or I kind of wish I returned it and got a refund but it's too late now since I threw away the receipt.
Reviewed by 780 customers Not for fine hair
Fine, spiral curl from Lexington, Kentucky
I have golden colored, fine, medium density, spiral curls. After having a baby my hair has become more dry. I was willing to give any product a try. I had never tried a cowash. The lack of lather took some getting used to but felt nice. This product is very thick as I applied it I could feel the oils suffocating my scalp. Though this cowash provides a decent slip it still left my hair feeling rough and course. Used with the curl smith in shower styler (love). I air dry my hair- it took much longer for my hair to dry. The finished product revealed shiny frizz free curls, but my hair was weighed down and looked greasy and dirty. My natural golden color looked more brown and dull. This product would be really nice for someone with hair more course than mine that could use the moisture and support the weight. Be careful not to slip. The oils in this product made my shower very slimy and slippery. I would recommend. Just not for me.
NOT "for all hair types"
Jess from Chicago
Really wanted to like this. I have wavy hair- so the fact it was advertised for all hair types is misleading. I could see this working well for maybe people with super curly hair. Not only did this leave my hair greasy, heavy, and unmanageable- it made my scalp break out! I've never had blemishes on my scalp until I used this! like legit breakouts. It was awful! I really tried to stick it out and use it a few times thinking my hair needed to adjust but I had to return it. So expensive and didn't work for me at all.
great product for my 2B-3A hair
KitKatToe from colorado
I have 2B-3A medium porosity, lower density, color treated hair. I had been looking for a full line/brand because I finally decided to take my curls seriously. I love this as a co-wash and I also use it as a typical rinse out. I originally bought the curl transition set to help build a routine, and this stuff doesn't add too much weight. I get good volume and definition using this with the curl quenching souffle, hold me gently balm, and on day 2 and 3 I use the leave-in and curl reactivator. The results have been great for me, but I know that not all curls react the same way even if the profile looks the same. I started with the trial sizes just to be sure and I would recommend the same for anyone unfamiliar with the Curlsmith brand.
also I great bonus that the company is committed to sustainability and is vegan/cruelty-free
Learn how to use products before you buy!
Sj from Indiana
I put before and afters of how bad my hair was before I learned how you take care of curly hair about a year ago.
If you don't actually know how to take care of your curls, stop buying random products amd thinking it is going to be a fix. Then giving bad reviews. Not every product will work for every curly hair type. Learn your type. Learn the products! There are tons of YouTube videos explaining how to actually deal with curly hair and what type you have.
It's not all about moisture! Your hair can have TOO MUCH moisture which is why it's dull, dry, brittle, ect.. it's a mix between moisture and using PROTEIN products as well. This is a CO-WASH people! It will not lather and leave your hair feeling amazing like a normal shampoo amd conditioner.
I use this 1 to 2 times a week and use the deep quenching conditioner after. I do not use this alone as a shampoo/conditioner and that's it. Still use a conditioner!
After my shower I use a protein leave in (redkin has an amazing one) then I use a curlsmith leave in conditioner. Brush your hair with a DENMAN brush if you have curly hair. I went from wavy limp hair to coil curls by learning how to care for my curls and using a Denman brush. Then I go in with a couple gel curl enhancers/mouse's (I mix and match). Works wonders.
YOU CANNOT HAVE CURLY HAIR AND EXPECT A COUPLE OF PRODUCTS TO WORK SOME RANDOM MAGIC ON YOUR HAIR AND IT LOOK AMAZING. It doesn't happen. It takes time, learning, and effort to have nice healthy curls. Do your research. I can go 3 or 4 days easy and my hair still looks amazing. Hardly any frizz and still great curls.
Do not use a towel on your hair (cotton t shirt or microfiber hair towel)
Brush hair dry before shower (wet hair breaks and damages so much easier!) Also put an oil in your hair a while before you shower. Helps when you go to Brush it out and is great for your hair.
Blow drying with a defuser (no heat or low heat) works amazing for volume and frizz, the more you move around and mess with wet hair the more frizz you end up with.
Linda from Dallas, TX
Now that I moved to Texas the wether is hot and dry so this product is excellent for my curly hair families hair. On days I don't want to use shampoo and conditioner I just use this and this cleanses and hydrates my hair as well as my daughters (8 yrs old) and sons (4 yrs old) very well. My daughter has a dry scalp so it's helping a lot with that and her hair looks so much hydrated looking and healthy. Happy mommy!!! 💖🥳
Slip is terrible (3c/4a thick/high density/long hair)
Mariah C type 4 from Boston
This product was so hyped I bought the 32oz. I've used almost half the bottle and can't figure out how to get the slip people are talking about- tried soaking wet hair, repeatedly dipping under the water, tried leaving it in for 5-10 minutes to "loosen curls"… it is creamy and feels great but when you have as much hair as me, it's just as important to be able to COMB THROUGH YOUR TANGLES! I wash my hair every 3-4 days so idk why this cowash was struggling so much. Clean on my scalp was just ok, but for this price, I expected something with slip comparable to my holy grail conditioner Giovanni smooth as silk.
The nicest cowash to exist
Nicole from Los Angeles
So wonderful and lovely. Does a good job of cleaning and makes my hair look and feel so soft and moisturized! Fragrance is nice as well!
repurchased. great product.
mau from nyc
this conditioning wash is definitely cleansing and moisturizing. i bought it initially in the transitioning kit, i didn't really like the rest of the products in the box but this i really liked and when i realized my bottle was almost out i ran out to get more 😭 i have type 3c/4a/4b curls and i would recommend this for girls with these type curls. at first i thought i wouldn't repurchase bc of the price, but you do get a lot of uses from the bottle.

My hair looks great and smells great
This is my new shampoo & conditioner

Leaves my hair feeling healthy. I have curly hair and I can comb my hair without it pulling out.
The best cowash on the market!
StarBright from TN
Every other cowash I've used has left my hair feeling oily and very not clean. I don't know how this stuff works but I don't even miss the suds. My hair feels clean and my scalp feels refreshed after using it. My curls feel moisturized and I have so much less frizz when I use it!
The best conditioner ever!
Wavycurlyginger from Los Angeles, CA
I have tried sooooo many conditioners over the years and when I find one I like, I buy it in bulk. I heard good things about Curlsmith, so I bought the jumbo size of this when it was 50% off during the hair event. With the thickest, most moisturizing conditioners and hair masks, it would take me a few minutes to detangle my long, thick, 2c/3a hair. And I had to use a lot of product. With this cowash, I have to use a fraction of the product and my entire head is detangled in 30 seconds. It's amazing! I'm hooked! I do use this product with a shampoo beforehand, so I can't speak to its ability to cleanse, but it is AMAZING as a conditioner. Definitely worth a try!
Can't live without it!
Kiba from Florida
I live in Florida and own a pool and colorful hair... without this wash my hair would be absolutely fried! But it keeps my hair nice and soft!
Hard to squeeze
Mimi from Massachusetts
Aside from having difficulty squeezing it out… I love how it made my curls feel.. lasts 2 days and it's the only product that can do that for my hair 🙏
Amazing for dry corse curls
Snow queen from Minnesota
I got this in a sample hair bag. I tried it on my 2B hair type. It was fine a bit I need a little more powerful soap. My hair when dried was shiny in a healthy way but close to being a bit too shiny aka almost oily looking. I get oily fast so that was a no for me.
- so I tied it on my kids hair. 3C. His hair is dry and corse to the touch. For a week after using this his hair was SOFT and had better looking more defined curls. He's not into hair at all, but if this goes on sale I will be picking it up because the results were amazing! If you have dry corset curls I would try this out.
Definition for at least 24 hours!
Sleepy definition from Weatherford, Oklahoma
I take a shower and use this. When my hair dries I can't believe what im seeing! My hair dries with definition! I go to bed sleep with a silk pillow case to preserve my hair and I wake up. The definition lasts through the night and entire day!
I would buy it again

This product does what it says it will do
Keesa from GA
Since I recently had to change my shampoo and conditioner, I decided to give Curlsmith a try, and they definitely didn't disappoint. This product left my hair so refreshed and hydrated and the smell is incredible too. I will definitely buy the bigger bottle next time.
I Will never buy this product again.
Ada from Vancouver, wa
It dried my hair out. It feels like straw.
Not sure if I can handle the scent
KK from MN
Purchased a large bottle of this after a great experience using the trial/travel size. However I didn't notice until I got the large bottle that this product is strongly scented, and this smell is now permeating our small bathroom and the rooms adjacent to it. I hate to lose this much money, but the constant smell is starting to trigger a headache.
a go-to purchase
Jazz from Tacoma, WA
My daughter has super curly hair and I have bought thousands of different products to try and find the easiest way to manage it. I didnt want a complicated multi-step system that she would fight to keep up when old enough to do it on her own.
After trying this product, I won't switch to anything else. It helps keep her hair manageable after a rough day playing or through sleep. She loves how soft her hair is after, and I love how effortlessly amazing her curls look.
I love this but the bottle is awful
Nursemom from Pocatello, ID
The bottle is impossible to squeeze. The first time I had to have my husband squeeze the product into my hands while I was in the shower. The next times I squeeze out the amount I need into a cup and apply it from that cup while in the shower because I can't squeeze it from the bottle with one hand into my other. I finally broke down and got the largest size that comes with a pump. MUCH better. The travel size is in a tube which is easy to squeeze. That bottle is so hard to squeeze!!
Holy Grail...with a Note.
Norma from Tennessee
My hair type: Fine, low density, high porosity, 2c/3a/3b waves/curls.
So let me start off by saying that this was the first co-wash I had ever used (about two years ago). I had just started wearing my hair curly, and had tons of heat damage and had no idea what to buy. I ended up buying this on a whim during Ulta's Black Friday sale (40% off, remember it!), and immediately regretted it... Because I was hooked and this stuff is expensive lol. The biggest difference you notice with this product is when you try to switch to a different co-wash. I've tried several. They're just not on the same level as CurlSmith, imo.
This co-wash somehow cleans and conditions my easily-weighed down hair. A little goes a long way but it's so nice that you just want to keep pumping this stuff into the palm of your hand. Would definitely recommend getting the larger bottle, and during Ulta's Black Friday sale.
**Note: I was NOT following the curly girl method. I was using this fabulous conditioning co-wash as my main shampoo, then a clarifying shampoo to get rid of excess oil and buildup on my scalp about twice a month. This seemed to work very well for me.
(Also this is all written in the past tense because I ended up forgetting to grab this stuff during the sale and now I'm just too stubborn to get it at retail price throughout the year. My hair definitely notices. Oof.)
Best thing for Curly hair
Girly girl from fresno
My hair feels so soft after rinsing, people with curls will understand. Most amazing product for my hair.
Great size/way to try a new product!

In the shower rinse to cleanse any residue then apply throughout my hair rinse, apply, rinse. SNAP!
