Q&A

Q
How can this product be used for color treated hair if it contains sulfates? I color my hair with a semi permanent product - will this shampoo be safe to use or will it strip the color?
Asked by Confused about sulfates
Official Answer By Paul Mitchell - Brand Engage
With certain formulas, sulfates can still be gentle on color-treated hair. Color-safe shampoos are specially formulated with ingredients to help keep your color vibrant while cleansing effectively. Color Protect Shampoo is color safe and is designed to preserve hair color. Was this answer helpful to you

Q
why don't you make this shampoo sulfate free (not sodium c14-16 olefin sulfonate - it's too rough on hair), and take out the dimethicone/silicone (because it really flattens hair), and make it a little thicker, especially the larger bottles (because it's too runny)? leave the other ingredients the way they are, and you would have the best shampoo for color treated hair out there!
Asked by Cricket
Official Answer By Paul Mitchell - Brand Engage
Thank you for your feedback. You may enjoy Clean Beauty Everyday Shampoo. It is sulfate free and great for a color safe, everyday cleanser. If you’d like an ingredient list, feel free to reach out to wecare@paulmitchell.com or 1-800-793-8790 for consumer support. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Why would you put Sulfates in a Color Protect shampoo?
Asked by terri
Official Answer By Paul Mitchell - Brand Engage
When a product claims to be “sulfate-free,” it's typically free of one of three commonly used compounds in shampoo: Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, or Ammonium Laureth Sulfate. In the industry, these compounds are known by the acronyms SLES, SLS, and ALS.Was this answer helpful to you
Q
What does the shampoo smell like?
Asked by Kenia
Verified Reply - Brand ExpertA young-at-heart and refreshingly energetic fruity floral with opening notes of apple blossoms, bright citrus notes with crisp leafy greens and bergamot leading the way into a heart combining golden lilies, gardenia, violet leaves and soft wild flowers. A fresh, yet warm and subtle green quality characterizes the base of galbanum, jasmine, and musk. Was this answer helpful to you

Best I've ever used

I've been professionally coloring for 30 years. This is by far the best shampoo I've found for color treated hair. And I've tried shampoos at TWICE the price. It cleans thoroughly yet gently and give nice body. Some color shampoos are so weak they leave an itchy film. Not so Paul Mitchell. Love it

Removes haircolor and greasy feel

I was recommended this product after they used it at super cuts. I got my hair colored and bought it since it says it helps color treated hair last longer. Within a week it began stripping the hair color each time I would used it. Then it left my hair greasy. People we're asking when I last washed m...

Good versatility, useful as a pre-shampoo for 1st wash. Foamed up, clean rinse and got my hair ready for a second wash using my other luxe shampoo. Will definitely use as a travel / after pool shampoo.

Does NOT protect hair color

This shampoo contains sulfates. Sulfates are highly known to damage hair color, so why they would put this in a "color protect" shampoo is beyond me. This shampoo dried my hair out so much, and ruined my bayalage highlights. I noticed that my hightlights became brassy much faster than normal, and did some research on this shampoo and founf it to contain sulfates. Needless to say, I will not be using this shampoo any longer. I highly recommend Olaplex. My hair is incredibly soft, feels thicker, and is protecting my color wonderfully. All in under just 5 uses.

I've been using the Paul Mitchell Protect Shampoo, and overall, it's a solid choice if you're looking for gentle daily cleansing while keeping your hair healthy. The formula is lightweight, lathers nicely, and leaves my hair feeling clean without that stripped or overly dry feeling. I especially appreciate that it's designed to help protect hair from heat styling and environmental damage, which makes it a good match for people who blow-dry, straighten, or curl regularly. The scent is fresh and pleasant but not overpowering, and it rinses out easily without leaving buildup. After a few washes, I noticed my hair felt smoother, looked shinier, and seemed easier to manage. For color-treated hair, it does a decent job of helping maintain vibrancy, though it may not replace a color-specific shampoo. On the downside, it's a bit pricier compared to drugstore options, and if you have very dry or curly hair, you might need to pair it with a rich conditioner for extra moisture.
