Most Helpful Positive Review Highly Versatile!
Originally I purchased this in Constructavist to be a strong base colour for my darker shadows and it worked beautifully. It wasn't till I tried the shade Painterly, however, that the product's full potential was revealed. I now use that shade as my only eyelid primer. It creates a smooth base that hides any unwanted pigmentation or imperfections and helps all eyeshadow stick and be more vibrant. It works better than other eyelid primers and even has a third effect as a under-eye concealer (not it's best function mind you, but in a pinch it gets the job done).
Most Helpful Critical Review Colors, texture coverage vary
I purchased three of these a couple of weeks ago after having previously tried some colors. Overall here is the review of each color I have:
Painterly- Good basic eye base or for those days when you want bare but not red eyelids. It has no sparkle but doesn't give a matte dry look. Works well under other powder eyeshadow as it is a true neutral.
Constructivist- Great brown color that goes on beautifully with a finger tip and less so with a brush. This is the color that caused me to experiment with these things instead of powder eyeshadow. Good Brown, not red, not muddy. With sheen but not annoyingly sparkly
Vintage Selection- Kind of reminds me of All that Glitters; this paint pot has a sheer finish with gleam, not sparkles. I use this on its own, or as the base with a layer of anything else. I like this, the color is more Champagne, but not too pink or yellow- once again right in the middle.
Frozen Violet- While I like the color is is so sparkly someone that sees me everyday commented on it. The color is a medium, sheer plum, but once again, it has those sparkles that you cannot seem to get off your face everywhere you touch.
I ordered all of these (except the Constructivist- which I guess was limited series) off the MAC Pro website. So I did take a risk, but oh well. I would say NONE of the colors have a coverage that is like a matte- say Blanc Type, but if you are a natural girl they should work okay for you and of course you can layer. Just beware these do set fairly quickly. I find a fingertip application gives the nicest result. The synthetic brushes I have for some reason I hold on to the color and it applies unevenly.
Also, I want to say I have been purchasing MAC since they first came to the US with Nordstrom (1989).

Best eye primer I have ever used. love it so much, I was a little put off by the price, but once I pulled the trigger I was so glad I did. it goes on like butter, blends seamlessly and lasts for hours. I even use it as a concealer on my no makeup makeup days.

I use this product to cover the darkness under my eyes. It is absolutely wonderful! The best product I have found to do the job!
Does not work
S2 from California
Very disappointed. This does not work as a primer. At all. My eyeshadow totally creases after only a few hours.
not what I thought
SuzeQ from Los Angeles Ca
I ordered this online and in the picture it looked like a pinkish but natural color. I was hoping to use it as a shadow but it is too neutral to use alone. Only good as a base coat under something with more color.

I have several Mac paint pots in different shades and I love them, so I was happy to see this new color. Pro: it's very pretty. Con: fallout everywhere all the time. I don't know how this shade of this product doesn't adhere to lids but can be found all over my face and it's so tough to get every speck of glitter. The matte shades I have are fantastic and I will continue to wear them, but this isn't just "original Naked palette" fallout we're talking here. So frustrating. I wish I didn't use my points on this and I am trying to figure out if it's worth it to return. I am thinking yes even if I feel ripped off because I am still scrubbing flecks of sparkle from places I did not originally apply this product. Wish they sold these in my stores so I could exchange for another matte shade.
Wonderful for Base of Cat Eye Look

I have allergy caused watery eyes and also love a simple No Eyeshadow Cat Eye Look. This the 3rd time I've bought this in Soft Ochre in accord with my light yellow toned skin. The only way I can make my favorite look with my dark brown liner pencil followed by setting it with bark brown eye shadow on a little slanted brush. Without the Paint Pot it always moved and smeared or eye shadow that would get 'blotchy'.
good for a natural eye look

if you're looking for a natural eye look or an eye primer, then this stuff is definitely for you!
No I would not buy this again
Vita from Highland. Ca
I did not like that this product is not easy to apply, it's thick, it does not smooth out if you wear serum's underneath.
Moss Definitely - A big no
Kristina from Indianapolis
This rating only pertains to this shade. I love this color however, regardless of how you apply it, or how much you apply, you'll never get this shade. One swipe on your lids with a finger = a muddy shade of greenish-black. Application with a brush yields a more fuller look / color but the shade is forest green. No emerald anywhere.
Lovely but dry
alystyle8 from Denver, CO
I bought this to use as a colored base for loose pigments that wasn't black. While it is pretty and I am glad I own it, it is drier than the painterly I use for my usual base, and it streaks. I struggle to get a smooth color, but as a base for pigments I am not too worried.
Good shadow to use without a primer

I have very sensitive skin and crepey hooded eyes. I was impressed the painterly shade could be used as my base shade instead of a primer which I hate using as sometimes they are irritating. I use Tailor Grey in my crease for a natural look. I apply using flat shader brushes- Mac 239s. I will experiment with other shades. The color does fade however after application.
I would definitely buy this product again!

I have oily hooded lids and small eyes. I live to wear eyeshadow and I love bright colors and glitter. This helps keep creasing down and colors pop on my eyes.
I wanted to love it

I don't know if it's just the color I bought but it's very light and basically just glitter on my eyelid.
Sheer glittery fall-out. Returned immediately!!

Had high hopes for this since i love these shadow pots. Unfortunately this was sheer and had visible glitter. What is the point? Selling watered down product is shameful.
Kittie from Buffalo
I use this as eyeshadow primer. When I saw there is nothing better in the market for primer than this. This is the holy grail of eyeshadow primer. Not only does your eyeshadow stay perfect all day it never creases smears melts or runs. It looks like you just put it it one fresh all day. Best product ever. I just wish my Ulta sold it locally. I have to order it and I'm not a fan of there shipping method. The only downfall to Ulta beauty. Please sell MAC at all your stores. Oh and dump laser shipping.

I swiped just a little to see the color . My eyes were immediately irritated. I prefer unglittered eyeballs. Ouch!!

This is a classic eyeshadow primer. Tried and true!

I like using this on the lower lash line and using starry night single eyeshadow from MAC over it. So pretty. Lasts all day. I have also used it as a liner. Like it that way as well.

I'm using this as an eyelid primer. Painterly is a great color for my fair to medium skin tone. It does a nice job of evening out discoloration. Also, application couldn't be easier-I use my fingers! I do notice a tiny bit of creasing which is the reason for the 4 stars. I may experiment with different ways of setting the product. Previously I used UD's primer potion which performed better as a primer, but the application was tricky and painterly is a better color match.
JR from CA
I use these eye shadows as a base then highlight with powder shadow. The versions with "sparkle" are a little much for my 72 year old eyes, but the others are great. I have sensitive eyes and skin and these shadows do not irritate. A nice product.
Anne from CA
I bought Painterly and Soft Ochre, both are great for a quick no makeup look or a base. They blend nicely and truly enhance any eyeshadow look. I want more colors!
Purduette from Brooklyn, NY
Got this because I love cream shadows and wanted one in emerald green. This one looks emerald green on the website and in the pot but actually goes on more like forest green. A nice color but not what I wanted. Also, it creases with or without primer.
