Are plates ceramic and do the top of iron get hot

I Just bought this iron and find that the wand gets extremely hot and burns your finger if you touch it, so no way to turn the wand with your extra hand when curling...frustrating and burned my finger tips...is the outside of the wand supposed to be this hot?

I have fine hair thats curly so the fact that i can get a beautiful straight shiny look sith one pass is amazing to me. No other flat iron has given me that look and if it did the look did not last throughout the day. With this product it lasts all day and even overnight as i sleep. This is a great option if you want to use heat on your hair and avoid damage. I use the lowest heat and I havent had a bad hair day since using this product!
