Wet makeup brush or sponge.
Dispense a small amount of cleaner onto your tool.
Massage brush cleaner into the tool using circular motions until a lather forms.
Rinse tool thoroughly with warm water and lay flat to dry.
Use as needed.

I am a fan of the spray cleaners with alcohol because I feel like they cleanse thoroughly and my brushes don't have to dry for an hour extended period of time. Perfect Cleaner for Make-Up Tools
This summer, I purchased Elf Cosmetics's Clean Queen Liquid Brush and Sponge Cleaner. You just need to apply them on the bristles and sponges to get them a good rubbing to keep them in shape. Easy to use without any messy residue, except maybe on your fingers. Easy to clean off as well.
