Most Helpful Positive Review BEAUTIFUL COLOR - But a bit dark
This color could not be more natural looking. I was previously coloring my hair a light brown/ash blonde and wanted to go a medium/light brown copper red. The preview photos of this color are all very different. I was hoping to turn out on the lighter side, but mine came out pretty dark, but it is ok because the color is excellent. It is hard to describe. Not too auburn, not too copper, not too brown. Just perfect! I was amazed at how the product had absolutely no scent what-so-ever! Finally nice to color my hair and not get a headache from the fumes. I have box colored my hair forever. For the last 2 years or so I was ordering from eSalon (they are really great too), but I always saw adds for this product and figured I'd switch it up. I could not be happier with the color. The price is the same as eSalon. The only potential draw back for this product is that the formula was not very liquid. I alway used cream formulas, but this one was different. It almost felt powdery when applying. It is nice because it doesn't drip and I got way fewer stains around my ears, but I was really close to running out of product. My hair is just shorter than shoulder length and I feel I should not have had to buy the extra bottle for long hair. But I was very fearful that I did not get the color worked in everywhere because it was so dry like and not going very far. I used every last drop and luckily I did not have any missed spots. But I did see a couple reviews where people complained their hair turned out patchy. I can see how this can happen. If you are in doubt about length, order the second bottle. You will be glad you did. Or just be very careful to evenly apply and work into your hair so you don't get dry patches. One thing I noticed (and like) is that after I washed and dried my hair, the towel did not have any staining at all. Usually, even if I spend forever rinsing out the product, when I dry my hair I get the slightest color on the towel. Not a big deal, but my pillow cases also get it after I color. And I bet it won't happen this time because the towel didn't have a hint of color on it! I will most definitely order again, but may go one shade lighter!

My color quiz matched me with lighter shades of blonde but I opted for this (it was still one of my matches) because it was darker and I am always afraid of going too light at home. According to the swatch online it did not look too far off of my natural color so I didn't think anything would go wrong. I normally get highlights because I have a lot of hair it takes 4+ hours plus quite a bit of money to get my hair done at the salon so I decided to try just coloring my hair at home from now on. BIG MISTAKE. This color turned my hair orange. After talking with the color care crew, I will be receiving the crema gloss to hopefully remove the orange but I am not optimistic. Waste of money and time and now I have to go to the salon to have my hair fixed anyway. 2 stars because the customer service at this company is fantastic and although my hair looks terrible, it is very soft and feels amazing.

Used once and loved it. I received many compliments. After the third of fourth application my hair started falling out. It's still falling out. I never use heat on my hair and it has always been healthy and shiny. Now it is dull and frizzy and coming out in clumps. Please avoid if you value your hair.
I would buy this product again

I tried for the first time to gently cover my grays. Color was soft and no harsh chemicals or smells. I'm excited to try this brand in a few months.
Not sure it's worth the cost

+ I liked that the product has a fairly low chemical smell compared to other dyes. - I barely had enough to dye my very short curly hair. I was scraping the bottle to get enough out and barely made it. - The color turned much darker than any pics

This product worked great for me. Saved me a lot of money compared to going to the salon. I see a few grays still showing through but I don't think anyone else would notice them, just me. It was also my first time trying to dye my own hair so that could be my fault too.

Shame on Ulta for giving Madison Reed ultimate shelf and ad space. Ulta, are you aware that many women are suffering at the hands of this hair dye that claims to be FREE of harsh chemicals. Women are sharing their stories online. Please be cautious. Many of us have lost our lush beautiful hair, nearly all of it after usage of Madison Reed products which contains ammonia alternatives.
Dried my hair
HDR from Wa
I used this three times and had no complaints about the color or the ease of use. But after second time noticed my hair became very dry, even with deep conditioning. Then my hair started to fall out. My hair is mid length and quite healthy. I colored it for years. I don't use heat styling etc. the only new thing I can think of is this color kit.
major hair loss
Natasha from CT
I bought this from Ulta a couple months ago, and since using it noticed that my hair was falling out in literal clumps. I didn't assume it was the hair dye at first until I did some research into the ingredients. My thick hair is gone. I only wear my hair up now because I absolutely hate the way it looks down and I dread shampooing because even more comes out. Please just spend the extra money have your hair colored at a salon. Or use a drug store dye if need be. Just stay away from this brand.

I started to color my mom's hair. I decided to try out Madison Reed. It is so easy. It comes with everything, I had a color brush already, that I need and more. The color stays extreemly well and covers the gray easily.
Hair has never looked so gorgeous and healthy!
Julia from GA
Have used the color 9a Pisa blond for almost 2 years, I always have a two-tone beautiful blonde color for my hair that is currently long and silky, I receive compliments galore!
i also use the Madison Reed shampoo and conditioner as well,,it's hard to use any other products after being so spoiled by these.
If needing to high lift color I do not believe this was created for that, it's great for keeping hair color looking amazing ( especially during these times,) using every couple months for myself.
Caused Severe Hair Loss

Had been going to salon to have my hair colored. Was tired of maintaining it. Decided to dye it my natural color, and stop dying all together after. This box dye was recommended.
The two stars are for two things:
1. The packaging presentation. Very classy and luxurious.
2. The thoughtful second set of gloves and a cap.
After that, there is nothing. My hair was healthy, no preexisting problems. I have used boxed dyes in the past, no problems. I followed the directions perfectly. Almost all of my hair has fallen out. This is not an exaggeration. Fallen out at the scalp. After reading the reviews, I see that this is a common occurrence. Listen to the reviews. They aren't lying.

Okay so I had really bad highlights I did on myself at home with some bleach and they were ORANGE. I've had them for about a month and decided to get this kit. It covered pretty much everything. It was super easy to use and there was a lot of product to the point where I was just using the extra to lather into my roots. Definitely recommend.
Beautiful Color, Minus One Star for Directions

I used this when I was had a conflict with my regular appointment I couldn't schedule around. I was nervous because I do color treat my hair with highlights, low lights and color. But, I am pleasantly surprised. I did meet with a MR online consult who recommended the color and told me what to do. She was spot on. I used this as she said (and she said leave it on longer than the box says). I probably could have reapplied some of the color to my roots a few times and left that on even longer. I do think you either need to reapply or do this twice in a row to get gray roots to cover, especially if you have color treated hair with a lot going on. As far as breakage, I had some hair fall out, but I don't think it is any different than at the salon. When you do it yourself, you notice it. At the salon, I don't notice it. After shampoo, my hair felt stringy, but then with the conditioner they provide, I had no issues at all with tangles or hair quality. My hair feels amazing.
Overall, with a few tweaks such as leaving it on for double the time and maybe having to do roots twice your first time using this ( I suspect after routing use you won't have to do it twice), I'm very happy with the way it turned out. The color is perfect. I'm not having any additional breakage or hair falling out. I don't have itchy scalp like I do at the salon.
I'm very pleased, and as picky as I am about my hair, for the cost of this versus the salon, I could stick with this. It looks that good. But, just remember - follow the directions except the time to leave it on - take longer. If you have a lot going on with your hair, you may need to do this twice at first and then maintain. It helps to talk to their consultant first, too. And, use their shampoo and conditioner when you rinse out the color.

Within months of using this hair dye, I started losing hair, lots of it. Within 9 months, I've lost 75% of my hair. I did not chalk it up to hair dye until I started noticing the clumps of hair on my shoulders after dying my hair. I started to investigate the label.
Madison Reed is able to make the claims of 'No Ammonia' because they have replaced it with an even more dangerous chemical called ethanolamine. This is a corrosive chemical that causes up to 85% more hair loss than ammonia. STAY AWAY.
Quality salon color without the expense!
Dolores from Chesapeake, Virginia
I found that the Siena Medium Cool Brown shade is just the right color for me--it's a great medium brown that has multi-dimensional color so that my hair looks very conditioned and natural, not harshly dyed.
I like having a plastic cap, two pairs of plastic gloves, cleansing wipe, and generous samples of shampoo and conditioner included in the color kit.
It is cumbersome and possibly environmentally wasteful to have the products packaged in two boxes, one inside the other, which are somewhat tricky to open.
For convenience sake, I wish that I could purchase this product in additional stores, not just Ulta.

While this was easy to use and has a nice color, my hair is falling out like crazy! Be careful with this stuff.

Read the reviews. Many people have issues with their hair falling out in clumps. Not breakage. True hair loss.

I've never really been the salon type but I did want to start using nicer box dyes and I'm super happy with these. I first tried the "darkest brown" shade before switching to the "darkest black" shade. I'm naturally blonde so i wasn't looking to match with my natural hair. However the depth these colors provides almost makes it look like these dark shades COULD be my natural color. I don't know how to explain it but it doesn't look like you just slapped some hair dye on. These do not damage my hair. And I like having the extra gloves, the barrier cream, the cap, the wipe. I wish it came with more product so I didn't have to order two but that's my only complaint! I've been enjoying these dyes a lot.
The ashiest golden blonde ever
Abby from Midland, MI
My hair was bleached, probably a level 9-10, very brassy and yellow. I bought 8NGV and my darker orange roots covered pretty nicely, but my ends are so ashy, almost grey. I've dyed my hair a lot in the past, I've use all kinds of different ash blonde dyes and none of them made my hair as ashy as this dye did. The color is pretty nice it just wasn't what I was going for or wanted at all. It seems like there's way more V than G in there. I can't think of any reason why it would come out so ashy on yellow and orange hair.
Complete waste of money

Didn't cover a single gray hair and the color is not even close to what i was expecting. I know box dye is unpredictable but ash blonde should result in golden blonde.... use at your own risk.
The color is great and covered well.

This made my hair a light strawberry blonde. I used 9NA. Did nothing to my friends hair. It is not worth the money, they should stop selling it. Garbage!
