I owned my Chi for over ten years. Being nearly 20 years old now, and having it given to me when I was 8, I can say that I put this iron through the ringer. I have frizzy, curly hair that would wear out hair ties and snap them after one use. Over the years it has thinned a bit and swimming has fried the intense curl out a little, but I'm still snapping hair ties and it did the job all the same. In the hands of my aunt, the professional hairdresser who chose it for me, it took roughly fifteen to twenty minutes to cover my entire head of hair, that was at the time about three feet long. In my hands it took a while longer, but once I got the hang of of it, I never took longer than 20 minutes either. Over the many years, I've had my hair above my shoulders, at my shoulders, to mid back, lower back, but mostly it has been past my butt. Alwasy being tall and having hair I could sit on for most of my life, I can safely say that this iron took on a LOT of hair over the years. I can also say that this iron works well with all different lengths of hair. I'm embarrassed to say that it even lasted through accidentally being left on ALL day long about three times within the last year of its life. This iron worked well for me up until it died when I believe the swivel cord eventually wore out, seeing as the power would turn on and off as I moved it. The plates never scratched, the hinge never lost stability, and the heat never waned. (If it did it was so little I, who knew it very well, did not notice.) It held up being lugged around in suitcases, backpacks, and tote bags the same as it did when it lived (and fell off of) my bathroom counter.
I bought a CHI ceramic hairstyling iron Original in the black box on September 26, 2006 from my hair salon. I had it till it just broke and would not turn on anymore, which was un-till August 11, 2013. I loved it because it would keep my hair and my daughters hair nice, silky and smooth looking. I have course hair that always looks frizzy if I don't use my CHI. I contemplated on buying a new one because they are so expensive and I have 4 children who need other things. My daughter told me she just absolutely had to have another one. Even though I loved the product, I was just apprehensive about spending the money. Needless to say I went to buy another one from the local Beauty Supply. It is supposedly the exact same one. I looked at the boxes to make sure. Although, they are not the same quality! The new one I bought on August 21,2013. It makes my hair frizzier, not silky smooth, and takes a long time to heat up, not to mention I have to run the iron through my hair a lot more times before it even remotely gets a little straighter. Also the outside of the Chi Flat Iron gets very hot to the touch. I asked my daughter about this and she said the same thing. She exclaimed we needed to take it back and get another brand. I am very disappointed in the quality of your chi. Is this something new you all have made. The quality of the old one compared to the new one is just not the same! The only reason why I bought a new one was because of my original experience. I used to recommend to friends that they needed to get one because it was awesome! But now I would never think on recommending your product. I am writing this letter just to inform you of this information. Over the years sometimes manufacturers make things cheaper and this to me is an example of it.

Terrible hair straightener. Rips your hair out when you use it and does not allow you to curl your hair. I do not recommend this straightener at all

Been using cheap straighteners for years and finally decided to splurge after my last one broke, big mistake. I've never used a straightener that has damaged my hair this much which is confusing because it advertises a 392 degree temperature but causes more damage than my straighteners that I use at 400+ degrees. I have clip in extensions that I had to throw away because one pass through this straightener ruined them, like it straight up sizzled them. Worst part, it makes your hair stink! Again, something I've never experienced with another straightener. Chi customer service doesn't care either. I called because I wanted to let them know that I genuinely think something may be wrong with this straightener or at least the batch it came from and they didn't even take down the batch number or anything, just said they would look into it but took down no info. They do have a warranty where you can sent the straightener in with a $15 check and get a replacement but that is such a hassle that I decided to just buy a different straightener from a different brand. Who has time to send their straightener in the mail and wait for a new one with the additional charge of $15 for a product I already bought? I always heard CHI regraded as the holey grail of hair tools so maybe mine was just defective but it was absolutely awful.

This is cheaper than other chi's for a reason. No heat setting. It gets so hot that it burns your hair off. I've been natural for 3 years & this fried my hair right away. I should've known better but I thought heat protectant and proper care would help. It didn't. Please use/buy at your own risk. Rip to my hair.

I did not know there no temperature setting for this flat iron. Not a major con, but want others to be aware.

I've always had CHI straighteners growing up, but this is not the same quality. It gets too hot and cooks my hair. And there's no way to adjust the temperature. Rip CHI.

This is my first chi straightener and I figured I might as well go for the original and start there. I have always heard how much people love the brand, but I tried it once and was really underwhelmed. I was hoping to use it to curl my hair, but it drags and snags and isn't at all smooth like I was hoping. I was left with multiple dents and the fried smell + steam. For the price point as well, I was disappointed there is no temperature setting. I returned it after one use. Ultimately, I would not buy it again, but I'll keep trying in the hunt for a smooth straightener.

I've loved Chi for years, but this flat iron just wasn't it. There's only one setting for the heat temperature, which leaves your hair fried despite putting heat protection spray. This flat iron left my hair frizzy, damaged, and smelling burnt after each use. Would not recommend to anyone.

My hair is thick and long, this straighter makes everything so much easier!

Versatile, great styling wand for flattening or curl.

This is my third original Chi in 15 years. I love the original, it works the best on my hair.

And then my husband knocked it on the floor, and stepped on it. I would highly recommend this flat iron to anyone! It worked well for my hair, and it never "fried" my hair. CHI is such a great and reliable brand. Look into treating yourself to a CHI, you won't regret it!

I used to think that metal plates + heat = straightener. The brand didn't matter. I got my 1st Chi seven or eight years ago and that all changed. With other straighteners..even those from the beauty supply stores..I have to run it over my wavy hair multiple times to get it straight. With Chi, it's one pass and done. I don't know what makes Chi different but it is. Maybe it has to do with heat distribution. I don't really even care. I just know that it works. My hair is healthy despite daily use (Chi Iron Guard is great btw) and I straighten my hair in one-third of the time. If you have waves or curls, invest in a good straightener to keep your hair healthy and to save time. The "original" is a good price and worth every penny.
(My old Chi still works! Unfortunately, I didn't take care of it so there is a lot of baked on product on the plates. I've traveled with it, dropped it many times and who knows what my teen has done to it when she used it but it still works. Keep your plates clean and it will last many years.)

I never realized how bad the cheap flatirons were until I used my first Chi!!!! It'll never not use a Chi!!!!

It does get the job done, yet is smells like something is burning while plugged in, and very easily leaves dent in my hair from the heat.
Mom from Yuba city ca
This product was a gift from my daughter as nd I love it

Bought this in February 2020 since my previous CHI I owned for 10+ years bit the dust. Bought the same size/model/brand and it works but not nearly as well as it's predecessor. I only use it to create waves and curls. It doesn't hold all day like it used to and it kinks if I hold it too tight. Hoping I can exchange it. Literally only used it maybe 10 times.

I use the iron to curl and add the look of more volume. It works much better for me than my curling iron. The regular size is great for travel.

Worked amazing in straightening my hair. However after one month and one use, it completely stopped heating up. It would still turn on and the light would turn on but no heat. I even tried leaving it on to warm up for an hour and still nothing

I have wavy to curly hair and it straightens my hair easily, without having to run it through my strands over and over. I've been loving my hair ever since I started using this iron. The only reason that I gave it 4 stars is because the cord is ridiculously long! Make it hard to manage it..

My first hair straightener I ever got in my life was a chi straightener. I got one back in like 2005, I was like 12. THIS SAME STRAIGHTENER will still work 15 years later. I've always kept it shoved back in the back of my bathroom cabinet as a plan b if my other straighteners fail. I got a Hot Tools straightener not too long ago. It lasted maybe a year and it barely heats up anymore, and if it does it takes A WHOLE HOUR to get up to 430°. I pull out my OG 15 year old CHI and this thing heats up like a champ everytime. It's older than some humans on this earth and it continues to be my fail safe. You can never go wrong with a CHI!

I have the first CHI that came out, mine has a short in it. I replaced it and got the titanium, hated it. Ceramic works best for my hair. Then I purchased this one and it definitely does not heat as well as the first CHI line. A little disappointed but since I usually wear curls I'll hold onto it

I bought my mom this straightener for her birthday in May. A couple months later it stopped getting hot. But I was happy I was able to return it.
Wendy from Saint Louis
I love the original Chi. I've used one for years and I just had to purchase a new one. I use it every day and it works like charm on my thick and wavy hair. Great product.
Carol from Nashville, TN
I wash hair every other day. The iron is so good I am able to use it every other day. Best iron ever, no cons.
Jess from Dallas
I've had this straightener for 14-15 YEARS and it still works so, so amazing. I've dropped it more times than I can count and it stills heats up like a champ and does exactly what it needs without pulling my hairs out. Get it!!!
