Most Helpful Positive Review Love!!! There's a trick to it.
When I first bought this, I used it alone and I didn't like it. Used it about 3 times on different occasions and it was like whatever. I ended up Leaving it on the shelf for a while. Then I saw it again one day and decided to give it another try, using it my way. I use this in the shower, soaking wet, I squeeze the water out my hair like a towel only once. This method works best because it isn't a lot of water left on my hair. I've this tried on dripping wet hair and it was not good. I part my hair in half and put about a medium sized amount on both sections of my hair. Then I gently squeeze the excess out only once. I put my hair in a bun and once I'm out the shower I put my hair in a towel while my hair is still in a bun. If I take the bun off and put the towel on my hair, it makes my hair frizzy. Once I change, I let my hair down and I use design essentials almond and avocado curl enhancing mousse. I use it throughly on my hair. And pat try the excess on my hair tips with a towel. Using the mousse brings the hydration back to my hair with a nice strong hold. Depending where I am going, I will put a little bit of hairspray all over. Not too much. I've bought about 6 tubes of these and using this trick has changed it for me. Hair stays in place all day, soft, bouncy curls. Once your hair drys a bit, you can fluff out the curls with your hands a little bit for more volume. I have 3c 4a hair. I've struggled with fizz my whole life. I used to wear my hair in a bun all the time until I started noticing my edges and roots slowly balding. After using this method I no longer put my hair in a bun and my edges have grown back. If you have given up on this product, try it again you can use my method or you can try your own.
Most Helpful Critical Review So disappointed!!
Sadly, I ended up hating this product. The reviewers are not wrong - the product gives you definition, but for me it was at a cost of losing volume and softness. Instead, my hair was flat, defined, stiff, and had some frizz (but this was minimal). I used it as directed (in the shower, soaking wet) and immediately felt a drying sensation. My hair felt like straw, but I figured this was the curly cast formation. Unfortunately, even after it dried and I broke the cast, there was left over residue, my hair felt dry, and felt kinda icky to the touch. I thought I might have used too much, so I sprayed it with water and scrunched some out which left my hands feeling sticky and my hair looking just as flat and more frizzy. I'm typically pretty good at getting soft and defined curls that last me 4 days, so it's not typical for me to get these poor results. Back to deva curl I go! I should have never strayed.

I live the hold and shine this gives my curls. The definition lasts for longer than any product I've tried. My issue is how my curls feel. Not sticky but you can feel product on them, if that makes sense. It hasn't stopped my from buying or using it.
I would buy this product again
Savy from CA
This product is very nice to use, it's just so sticky! The stickiness on your hands is very gross after using it. It defines my curls and makes it look really really nice. It just feels nasty to use! Once you scrunch , your hair looks nice! I just hope they can change the product to be less sticky
horrible sticky glue like substance
Nataly from Chicago
I have never had anything more disgusting in my hair. It felt like glue. Once dry it wasn't as bad, but even a little sweat reactivates it.
On subsequent days my scalp started itching too and I couldn't wait to wash it off.
I thought it would come off easily, but it took some effort and I needed a lot of conditioning because for some reason my hair felt so rough as if all cuticles got open. I used my normal high quality no sulphate curly girl friendly shampoo and conditioner. I have used and liked other Curlsmith products and normally I'd try again with more water or less product, but I just can't make myself touch it. It came off today and I am feeling so light and clean today!
Wanted to love it
Abbi from Indiana
Really wanted to like this product because I though the higher hold would help my frizzy hair. However, it just weighed down my hair. Not for me but doesn't mean it won't work for anyone else!!
wanted to like this, but it didn't work out

I'm so glad I didn't buy the full size, and got the travel size on sale, because it made my hair feel greasy and it's just not worth the cost to me. It does live up to its "strong hold" claim, which is why it gets 2 stars instead of 1. I've tried it 2 times, because that's about all it lasts for, and each time my hair held definition, but it felt greasy and even though there was no crunchy cast, my hair didn't really bounce like normal. I followed the directions for use, so I guess it just doesn't mix well with my other products or my hair in general. I've used the styling souffle with no issues and love those results, so I guess I'll stick with that gel. It is very moisturizing, so that's a plus. But, overall it's a pass for me.
Only product that works!
MonieMom from La
I've tried so many different gels and none work like this. It gives a good hold and shine that last for at least a week. I have short curly/coily hair that's really dry. This helps so much. I use a denman brush to get the curls really defined and for the back I use a sponge.
Yes ,I would buy this product again

I recommend using it on wet hair like said on the bottle. The first 2 times I used it it turned out ok. I decided to get the feather light protein cream to go with it because I think the gel was a little bit too moisturizing on my hair. Pared with the cream I love it!!! On the Curlsmith website it tells how to apply the products. That really helped me!!! My hair really refreshed well the next day!!!

I'm so impressed! I have type 3A curls and have always struggled with curl definition, but this product gives me awesome, lasting curl definition and beautiful ringlets. Took a few tries to figure out the right amount since I was used to using large quantities of Arc AnGel -- too much and your hair will be stiff and sticky, but a quarter-sized amount for my slightly longer than shoulder-length hair does the trick. Really strong hold and calms down my baby hair frizzies when I wear my hair up.
Don't For Type 4 Hair
NS from California
The only way I can describe my hair after using this gel paired with the oil-cream leave in is a dry, frizzy mess! Sponsored YouTube reviews claim this works great on Type 4 curls and coils, not mine. I tried using it on soaking wet hair and in the shower. My curls/coils in the back were more defined but super dry. Very disappointed.

This has been a savior for my curls! I have 3A hair and a little goes a long way for me. Finally have curls that aren't being weighed down so heavily.
Made my waves feel gummy
Adriana from US
I tried this multiple times and I am really not a fan. I have 2b waves and my hair loves gel. This stuff comes out sticky and thick, but even when I was scrunching it seemed like it was not holding my waves together. And I always style on soaking hair. When I went to diffuse, it felt gummy and took way longer to dry than usual. Even with that gross feeling, I was left with very little definition. It's a hard pass for me.
Not for me
Lauren88 from Pittsburgh, PA
This is a very strong hold gel. I don't like the way it feels on my low density curls. My hands actually feel sticky after I touch my hair even on the second day. I've tried using this a few different ways, but each time I'm disappointed with the results and just want to wash this off of my hair. It weighs my hair down and makes it look even thinner. I think if you have coiled or rougher texture hair this way provide the hold you need, but for thinner curls I would use one of the other gels. I love curlsmith products, just not this one.
AS-R from Western NY
This product gives me great curls! Like curls up to the root - which is exactly what I'm looking for. I really love it, but I can't give it 5 stars because it's SO sticky! My hair will begin to feel sticky again with the slightest amount of moisture in the air. If I get some product on my forearm by accident it like tightens my skin because it's so sticky. I have to wash my hands multiple times after styling to rid them of the stickiness. Also due to the fact that's it's so sticky I feel like it attracts fuzzies and tangles my ends a lot more than normal. I know - say sticky one more time! But I love the results so I keep using it :p
Personally did not work for me
Maddie from New Jersey
I have fine, 3a/3b curls and wanted to love this but it didn't work for me personally. The first time I used it, I used too much and it made my curls look gorgeous but it was just way too heavy and sticky near my roots. I tried to clarify, and use less and I didn't get enough hold or curl definition. Maybe it takes some experimenting to figure out, but based my on experience it's just not worth the high price tag.
One of the best styling products I've ever used!
Rockie from New Jersey
I apply on soaking wet hair, raking through and using prayer hands. My hair instantly clumps and curls up. I typically let it air dry. The curls are simply beautiful. It leave a soft cast which I break with a light oil on my hands; then I squeeze my hair. I have 3c/4a hair and my curls last. This product was recommended and I was skeptical. I have since purchased a ton of other Curlsmith products!
Elle from Fairbanks, AK
It took me a while to decide on this product, because I was overthinking how I use it and experimenting too much combining it with other products. Kept simple, this stuff is great. Use liberally on soaking wet hair, let it dry, scrunch it out. That's it. For next-day refresh, dampen, let try, and scrunch it out again. Your hair will look shiny and defined but feel bouncy and touchably soft. It's perfect and has totally changed how I feel about my hair.
I don't see the point of ever trying another gel!!

My holy grail gel

This was amazing I love how it works on my hair patiently await my products I ordered offline.
han from baton rouge LA
when they recommend using on soaking wet hair they mean it! it defined my curls so well and gives me a solid 2-3 day wear without needing a refresh. definitely recommend using a leave-in conditioner with it or else you might feel your hair is too dry but the results of the curls are amazing!
Really great for humidity
Erin from WV
I only wear this product on hot, humid days or rainy days….It can feel really heavy and weigh down my curls if I don't follow the directions or use it in the right weather conditions. I always apply leave-in conditioner to soaking wet hair then apply this product. Super great hold, and looks amazing once you scrunch out the crunch ( with oil, of course).
Arc Angel on Steroids!
EllGal from NJ
Searched high and low for a replacement for Deva Arc Angel and this is it but WAY better!! I've never experienced hold like this - a week in and my curls have not separated - not even in the front. As far as application, I washed, conditioned, added a curl soufflé cream and then this gel using the praying hands method all on soaking wet hair in the shower. Wrapped my hair in a Tshirt for a few minutes and the diffused. Just perfect!!
A good Curl Definer for 3B curls
CSL from No wales Pa.
A good curl definer for 3B curls. Not better than Quidad high humidity gel or Rizzo Curls Cream, but just as good and in the same price range. I always apply all my products in the shower when hair is soaking wet, so only have to use the Denman brush after.

Extremely strong hold. greatly paired with the oil in cream for coarse hair.
