These are coated with a coarse and uneven gritty substance. It scratches the nails and feels awful against the finger edge. I'm not sure how I ever did at-home manicures without these. I use the rougher side after pushing my cuticles up to scrub/scrape away the dead skin or any uneven layers on my nail. I use the wooden side along the sides of my nail between the skin and nail to remove any dry skin- this is what makes it look so detail-oriented!
