Let me preface this by at least saying what my skin type is - I find the reviews most helpful to me are the ones that also state their skin type so I can relate.
I have combination skin, more on the dry side. Foundation and tinted moisturizers are extremely hard for me to find because everything always just exacerbates my dry skin and/or breaks me out. I dealt with acne for years so my skin has remained fairly sensitive now that it has cleared out. I've tried everything from Tarte to BareMinerals, MAC, all of it and I've tossed out plenty before I finished.
My current go-to for better coverage is Lancome Teint Idole, great coverage and wonderful for my picky skin.
Now, for the actual review on Jane Iredale. I wore this on my wedding day; my makeup girl recommended it to me since I got married in the summer and my skin would of course, not survive in the sun because the oiliness would take over and rub everything off.
Honestly this stuff covered amazingly, didn't make me look too pale but also didn't make me look too dark or orange as it darkened with more coverage. I didn't even need a lot, and I still looked very natural, and the makeup still stood out great in photos. My skin survived, no breakouts, and it LASTED THROUGH THE WHOLE DAY.
I was in the sun for my ceremony, and out on the dancefloor for my reception so I did enough where with any other foundation/tinted moisturizer I would have worn, this stuff would have slid off but not the Jane Iredale. I can't believe I finally found it on Ulta because I haven't found anything good (besides Lancome) since then.
I believe the negative comments are valid, but just wanted to put my two cents in. I trusted this for my wedding day, it's worth the price for me.
There are many things I like about this moisturizer--first, there is a shade light enough, and of the correct tone for my skin. Finding truly fair shades of tinted moisturizers that don't end up orange or yellow-y is incredibly difficult. The formula is cosmetically elegant: feels great, dries down quickly (but not too quick), and has a nice, non-greasy finish. I have combo skin and throughout the day this doesn't exacerbate my oily areas, nor does it start to look cakey. As a moisturizer, it's pretty nice and does the trick, but I have normal/combo skin (so take it with a grain of salt if you're on the dry end).
What is lacking--
Number one: more coverage. I understand this is a TINTED moisturizer, but it is--in my opinion--too sheer. I had hopes that it would be something more like NARS tinted moisturizer in terms of coverage (which I love but isn't quite pale enough for my vampire skin). I can hardly tell I put this stuff on my face, and I don't really mean that in a good way. The coverage that you do get, at least, goes on fairly even.
Number two: higher spf. Obviously I was aware that this was SPF 15, but given the disappointing coverage it would at least make up for itself if it provided more adequate UV protection. 15 is the minimum recommended by the FDA, but other institutions recommend at least 30 (e.g., American Academy of Dermatology) and I like to go with the recommendation of people who specialize in skin health.
While there is a lot to love about this moisturizer, it fails to deliver on some important features given its high price point. Maybe the poor coverage is specific to the lightest shade, but I don't think I'll be repurchasing unless the formula changes to address some of the above. Not worth the money in my opinion.
I use this and Liquid Mineral foundation half & half mixed. I put it on my hand just like a how-to-video and mix with my finger while pressing all the mineral balls. Then I finish this with pressed, or powder foundation on top. I love it so much and can't wait for these to come back in stock! It does have some smell when putting on first but it will disappear soon. It smells like jasmine. I prefer unscented, but it's bearable The one I currently has is very watery and it's hard to use out of the tube. I shake it first, but it's still water coming out first every time, like when you use ketchup. so I put it out in a little container and keep refilling it. I almost want to cut the tube so I can scoop it out! I don't want to complain about this amazing product, but if they can change it to a better tube, more squeezable or a container instead of a tube, that would make it easier to use.
It's odd because I am chemically sensitive and most scents are just too much for me but there is something about this scent I like. That said, this just didn't work. It seemed to make my pores way more noticeable, the color was a bit off and it's too shiny for me...really highlights bags.
Been using this for over 10 years. Wouldn't trade it for the world!!
Great moisturizer that provides color and protection from harmful sun rays. I've been using it for several years and will continue to do so!
I've been using this product for years - I love the weightless feel, the hint of tint, and the coverage - when I add a little powder, I feel confident that I won't be burned! I hope that they never stop making this, as it is a staple in my minimalist beauty routine.
