I wanted to revise my initial 3 star review that I did for this product, but Ulta isn't really good at allowing one to do that...so I decided to add another review to add to what my experience has been with this vitamin C serum. Initially, I gave this serum a "hard pass" but have grown to appreciate how great this serum is. First of all, the smell is from the Ferulic Acid which gives any serum that contains it a "hot dog water smell." I don't like the smell, but having a smell doesn't make the serum "bad"...it is simply the Ferulic Acid. This serum contains THD ascorbate (THDA), which is a fat soluble form of vitamin C, which means it actually does penetrate all the way down to the dermis layer of our skin, and studies have shown that THDA actually interrupts the formation of cancer cells. THDA is also very shelf stable. L-Ascorbic Acid (LAA, the most widely known form of Vitamin C) is water soluble, which means it stays on the outer surface of your skin, never penetrating to the dermis. So, when you combine THDA, vitamin E and ferulic, then you have a very potent antioxidant serum that has science based cancer fighting results. That is why, after putting the bottle down and calming my rosacea skin, I tried this serum again. I am very careful in how I use this serum. as most vitamin C serums irritate my skin. Vitamin C serums also don't need to be used every day. They can be used every other day or every 3 days, as vitamin C does remain on your skin for a few days after you apply it, even with washing. What makes this serum the very best out there, in my opinion, is that it can sit on your shelf for 18 months before it goes bad, and it penetrates deeply and is more effective than LAA. I'm glad I gave this serum another chance. I even use this as a stand alone moisturizer, as it is very creamy. Some nights, I combine it with PTR's Water Drench serum and call it a night. Give this serum a shot, your skin will thank you.
I have many PTR products & was excited to try this one. I have been using it for about 3 weeks & really can't see much of an improvement. I agree that it is more like a moisturizer then a serum. It made my skin oily using it 2 times a day. I have decreased to just once a day. I feel it also made my skin breakout. So sad that it isn't living up to the hype on my skin. I didn't notice any irritation though.

I am lost on all these smelly issues. I am blind and have hypersensitive sense of smell. I've read the smells of hot dog water to Tar and plastic, which all smell significantly different. Which is it? I smell vitamin C; a very mild orange very lite fragrance. Definitely not a deal breaker. When my very flaky, dry, sensitive, mature skin with lesions from cystic acne is now more balanced than it's ever been and I'm 51 years old. It is a little on the greasy side temporarily which is why I use it only at night about 30 min before bedtime. I use water drench for daytime. If you have time on you're hands with patience you can use it during the day. You'd need to apply about an hour before makeup to fully absorb. It was the only product that allowed me to exit my home with less breakouts. The breakouts turned to lesions that freaked people out. This product gave me a ticket out of hiding and I'm thankful.
I have mature, very dry and Flaky skin that unfortunately is paired with a cystic type acne that's very painful. After going through product after product this Serum is the only thing I have ever used that balances my skin. overnight the first time I used it I noticed a significant difference in texture and smoothness. Also it doesn't break me out. it's very difficult to get a balance with sensitive aging complicated skin. my breakouts haven't gone away completely but this does make it significantly better. my favorite part is the change in texture so quickly because with all my breakout skin issues, the texture of my skin is Lumpy bumpy and scarred from my cystic breakout. I always have at least one or two. but realistically I cannot understand all of the negative reviews maybe it's just a skin type thing and it's just perfect for my skin type. this is the only product that makes me feel comfortable going outside of the house and not scaring people with the lesions I usually have on my face.

I was pretty close to returning this product because of the smell. It's like a smoky/ outdoor bbq sort of smell which is really weird. I wanted to keep trying it to see the results on my skin and I am glad I did. It has made my face so soft and evened out my skin tone and smoothed my fine wrinkles. I'm 34 so I don't have a ton but I do have some. I don't think I would buy this product at full price but I do think it works.

I absolutely love the results, I just am having a hard time getting past the smell. I have been looking for a good Vitamin C serum and was able to pick t his up in the recent 20 days of beauty sale for 50% off. I have been using this product for three weeks and my skin is surprisingly just beautiful. I don't think I've felt this way about my skin since I was in my 20's. It's tone is evening out, its soft, smooth, and glows. It is doing what it says it is supposed to do. I just don't know if I can get used to the smell. I would recommend this to a friend, but would warn them about smelling it first before purchasing.

been using for 2 days and it smells like something died in a toxic waste plant. For the price I'll suffer and use it all, but will never purchase in the future.

This is not irritating at all and good for sensitive skin. I used one bottle and probably used too much at a time. Keep in mind this is a serum and you can use small amounts, otherwise the bottle does not last very long. It seemed to help clear my skin a little, but not sure it is so special that it is worth the price. There is excessive packaging for the amount of product. Also, once you've used most of it up, it is impossible to get out any remaining product in the bottle.

I had this on my face for maybe 30 min and washed it right off. I couldn't stand the smell, it smells like a burnt slim Jim, or like one of my dog treats I forget the brand. Anyway what a bummer I wish it smelled differently.

It amazes me how people write reviews about how it smells, if they add pretty smelling fragrances to cover up the ingredients that are good for your skin, that defeats the purpose of the product. Fragrances cause reactions to the skin and I'm not interested. I love the product, great results. I also know that just because something makes you break out it doesn't mean it's a bad product, it's just not the right product for you. Most of the time it means it's too strong for you. Learn your skin people.

If you get get over the smell then it might be, I just don't know. I used this serum and continued to smell the horrible "jerky" scent hours after use. Not sure how anyone can handle the smell.

I can't tell you how well this works as I only used it twice. I just couldn't get over the intense smell of beef jerky! It smelled so loud it made me sick. Couldn't wash it off. Do not recommend.

I have noticed no chang in my skin tone or number of fine lines. Perhaps it is too soon to tell.

I have repurchased this several times and it is my favorite. I have tried many different Vitamin C serums and this is the best, IMO. First of all, you actually see results with it which makes it totally worth the cost. It is hydrating but still light. Most importantly for me, you can still use your chemical exfoliants with this and not have any irritation. It layers nicely if you need to put a moisturizer on top, but I find that I can usually just go straight to my SPF.

I had a bad breakout from this, actually it happen the first day I used it. Smh

This serum is truly a game changer. I have dry, sensitive skin, and it has helped tremendously to sooth sensitivity, moisturize, even out redness and fade hyperpigmentation.... I am always on a lookout for this item to go on sale as I cannot imagine my skincare routine without it! Also, typically I am sensitive to fragrant skincare, however, this product does not smell "bad" to me at all. Highly recommend. If you have dry skin, it's a must have for you 😉

It's my first week, so I can't tell much but so far I'm loving it

If you can get past the smell, then this product is great. I actually thought it may be bad initially, just FYI on the smell part. That said, it has done wonders for some of my dark spots and goes on easy and soaks in well. Not greasy or have feeling. Worth the cost.

This is my second bottle of this serum, so that speaks volumes. I use it 2x a day on face and neck, and I have seen visible results. My neck looks smoother, and my skin is most definitely brighter. I think if you apply as directed, you'll see results. It also has a nice clove smell, if you like cloves, of course.

Used product as directed.

I am sensitive skin and acne prone. This serum has saved my skin! It has brightened my scars and faded hyperpigmentation!! I can't be without it. Yes it doesn't smell "like oranges" but guess what the ingredients and science behind it is what matters! Plenty of perfume disguised as vitamin C out in the market. PTR is the real deal

After reading the bad reviews I was so hesitant to buy it but took a risk and started using it 10 days ago. it has a very unpleasant smell and thats the only negative thing about it..I have used vichy for a long time but never saw any improvements and after using this one my skin is radiant and fresh, so hydrated and I will continue buying it and recommend it to anyone. ignore the smell and get it.

Apply to clean dry skin 2x a day. I'm African American and have been dealing with dark marks from acne that I pick at. This product has improved my complexion tremendously. I'm on my second bottle. It's pricey but worth it. Smells weird too.
