Most Helpful Positive Review Perfect tanner for my face
I am somewhat olive-toned and tan pretty easily (just a bit pink at first and can get quite dark), but in the winter I become paler and I do like a subtle tan on my face and legs, especially from a product without a guide that I can control (like drops), and with no transfer. Personally I'd rather be less tanned and have a no mess/no drama product. I have tried 27 self tanners from grocery store to high end. St Moriz mousse produced a nice color on my legs but I didn't care for the guide color.
For a couple of years I have been using ONLY La Mer Soleil Gradual Tan on my face (only thing I trusted unril now) and various cheaper self tanners on my legs (lately mostly Tan Luxe Gradual and Jergens) to match my naturally tanned arms (these products are a bit warm on me so not a perfect match but close). La Mer is great on my face, but the very steep price and recent challenges in finding La Mer online caused me to want to find a new substitute product for my face. However, until recently I was afraid to try anything that would turn out bad and I'd have to go out in public looking ridiculous.
To be honest I wasn't sure about Tanologist, it seemed a bit young for me (I'm in my 50s), but I read really great things about the color being less warm and more neutral so I decided to try the Dark shade. First I tried it on my stomach mixed with moisturizer, and then the next day I mixed 4 drops in Cetaphil moisturizer (about a nickel sized amount in my palm) and applied to my face/neck/chest with exam gloves (to avoid staining nails/hands). Something I also did – and I don't recommend doing this - but just to verify this stuff actually worked, I also put one straight drop (no moisturizer) on the inside of my arm and WOW it really worked in a BIG way (this dark spot took a week to go away). Note: this product has a slow fade so I think it is best to start with fewer drops and always mix with moisturizer or some other product.
Another thing to note is that this is a relatively slow developing tanner – over 8 hours before it is fully developed, at least for me. So the following AM, before it was fully developed, I saw a nice sheen and glow but I became somewhat impatient about the color on my face and I decided to add apply 4-5 more drops (again mixed with Cetaphil), which ended up being too much together with the previous 4 drops the day before. The color was nice and even, absolutely no orange or yellow, but WAY too dark for me. It faded down very evenly/nicely after about 3-4 days with normal washing/exfoliating (no major scrubbing needed), and I decided to start again more conservatively, with just one drop this time. The next evening I used 2 drops mixed in and I was thrilled with the color – an even better color on me than La Mer (which I love but has a slight yellow undertone on me). Also, while La Mer's Miracle Broth agreed with my skin it can be a bit too rich for my combination skin/large pores (so I only used it twice week). Tanologist drops are even BETTER for my skin type – you use your own moisturizer so not as oily and absolutely NOTHING in my pores, not over moisturized at all.
The smell of the Tanologist drops is very faint – maybe a little like a citrusy-pear smell and little if any self tan smell (not that this bothers me) while developing. I also applied on my legs (6 drops mixed with about a nickel sized amount of moisturizer) and it produced a very good natural match for my arms (with even a little realistic pink tone in there), no splotches or streaks, but for some reason the color produced on my face is the BEST part about this product for me – it produces the most perfect natural neutral tanned shade, the least warm ever, even/no streaks/spots, and the best I've ever seen on my face (to date, on my face I've only used: La Mer, Tan Luxe drops, Tan Luxe Gradual, and now these Tanologist drops).
I saw absolutely no transfer from Tanologist on pillows/sheets (but I always put down ones I don't care about to be safe). A tiny bit comes off on a tissue after a hot shower so best to avoid hot showers and pat dry. The bottle seems small but lasts a long time and I can't believe this $20 product is actually a better tanning product for my face than my La Mer Gradual!! I may try the Tanologist water or mousse on my legs over the summer when my arms get darker from running/gardening outside but I am thrilled to have found the best self tanner for my face. The only negatives I see for this product is the development time is a bit slow (so be patient before adding more!) and some may not want the alcohol in the drops but it works out great for me and my skin time! I am so pleased this !!
Most Helpful Critical Review You can get better for the price
I wanted to love these drop so badly :(
My legs are super white and I wanted a product I could use both face and body but I refuse to put body products on my face so I liked that I could mix this separately with my face moisturizer. Also my legs don't tan as much as the rest of my body so I wanted to use more there than the rest of me. So that's a pro for me, as well as the fact that if rubbed in completely it doesn't really streak. But that's where the pros end.
-THE SMELL IT LEAVES! it claims to be fragrance free, but the smell stays on your skin just as much as a spray tan smell would. Even when mixed with scented lotion it dries with a smell. And no, the shower doesn't get rid of it either.
-can be pretty orange if you're trying to go for a dark color, this is not it sis.
-the dropper is hard to get perfect drops as well as squeeze to fill up the dropper all the way. Probably due to the consistency, but also when mixed with lotion it just gives you a watery lotion which is weird. Also if not mixed in completely some of the drops/color will leave a splotch were its more concentrated instead of completely mixed in with the lotion. Even if the tan drops run to the side of your hand while mixing.
- because it has to be mixed with a lotion you put in your hands right? Well you wash your hands so you don't have orange palms but now you have pale backs of your hands and a harsh line like you tan with glove on. Awkward. So then what? Do I mix it in a dish and dab it on the back of my hands? That's a lot of extra work.
- 4 drops on my face made me look like a Cheeto.
-and finally my current situation/problem. I have two different color legs. I counted out exactly 10 drops both legs and I guess since the dropper won't give you a nice clean drop, one got a little more product than the other.

I just used Tanologist drops for the first time and the smell is completely overwhelming. It smells like a dipped my face in cheap perfume even after its been on for 10 minutes. I do not have a weak stomach, but this smell is making me nauseated. Its like the worst smelling old lady perfume. Effectiveness is yet to be determined. We'll see if I can even leave it on long enough to do anything...

I tried this one time so far, and by the end of the day I had a nice color/glow on my neck and face.
It did not have a smell at first, but after a few hours it was all I could smell until I showered. It lasted a few days and did streak a little on my jawline, so do be careful to mix really well with the moisturizer. Overall I'm happy though!
GOOD PRICE GOOD PRODUCT

Would have given 5 stars except it was a little orange-might have been user error. I don't know how people are saying that they used more than 12 drops and didn't see any difference. I used the "dark" and mixed 4-5 drops with my moisturizer and saw results in about 4 hours. I am not too fair skinned, kind of acne prone but definitely in need of a glowy tan. 4 drops was plenty for me. Hasn't caused any breakouts and I will continue to use. I would say to start with fewer drops than too many because you can always add more.
-no bad smell
-didn't stain hands (just wash them after)
-just a little orange (I may have used too many drops for my first time)
-I would buy again!
Been tanning for 20+ years, this is my new go to!

I have used tanning beds since I was 16, now I'm in my late 30s. When I was younger my belief was the darker the better. As Ive gotten older I just want a touch of color so I usually tan a few times a month in a 20 minute bed. I tried this stuff for the first time last night and I'm in love!!! I did a couple of drops in my face lotion, then did a couple of drops in the lotion for my legs, a couple of drops for my torso, and a couple of drops for my arms. This morning I have the most perfect glow. I'm not blotchy and it looks authentic!
do not buy if your pale

I am very fair skinned, I went for the lightest color, after getting a sample of this. I was really excited. honey when I say I was ORANGE FOR DAYS ,I mean it. I exfoliated, scrubbed , nothing worked except time. if you are already tan this is probably a great product for you, I like the concept of being able to mix in a lotion or moisturizer but its to ORANGE.
bad for ance pron skin

Love how easy to use and how fast you can see the results. Be careful to use around feet and ankles.

I've tried several self tanners and like this the best. Easy to use, doesn't turn orange and lasts several days. Have repurchased.
Nice real tan color

I got a sample packet with an order. Wow. These actually work. I'm ultra pale and the packet was so tiny I just decided to use it on my face since I didn't have enough to do both arms. Anyways it worked! The sample was medium and I have a lightly tanned face! I'm on the site to place an order for the bottle. Seriously you only need a couple drops. I mixed mine with a very watery serum ( peach and lily glass skin) and it spread easily and gave me a perfectly even light tan. Looks like I was on a boat for the day ( but didn't burn ;)
For how little you use the price is super reasonable. My sample was in medium and I'm tempted to buy that shade but I'm gonna try the light one just to avoid any self tanner mistakes, I don't want to end up looking silly.
Just wow! So impressed
Paulinka from Chicago
I just received a sample of this in medium and I love it! Mix it with moisturizer and it will give you a perfect tan face and neck. It does NOT look orange and doesn't wash off or fade unevenly. I will be purchasing the bottle!
On my 2nd bottle & will order again & again

I'm on my second bottle of Tanologist F&B drops , I mix it in my face cream at night and wake up with a beautiful tan glow - Not orange. I use every two to three nights. Love this product.
Perfect for getting the exact shade of tan you want

There's definitely a learning curve with the drops. I premix the drops with a cheap drugstore lotion in a container before so I basically make my own self-tanning lotion. That way I get the moisturizing benefits from the lotion and also a sunless tan from the drops. I would NOT recommend putting some lotion in your hand/on a mitt, adding a few drops, and then applying it. That could cause parts of your body to be different shades since you're mixing it on your body instead of in a container beforehand.
BIGGEST SUGGESTION: premix the drops and lotion before applying it to your skin. Depending on my much lotion is already in your container, start out with less drops since you can always apply more for a deeper tan.

I put so many drops in my lotion to try and get any kind of color and nothing worked. I think I stopped at 40 drops? Even the associate at the counter couldn't tell I tried to use it at all. Spend the extra money for the name brand
Great color, even tan

I love to be tan, but I refuse to use tanning beds anymore. This is such a great alternative. I have been an avid St. Tropez user and I still will be but it doesn't last as long as I would like. I saw a blog once of some girl using a different brand of tanning drops in conjunction with her St. Tropez. I couldn't find that one so I grabbed this one. The tan is a little more yellow than the St. Tropez mouse, but it works great with it. I added about 4-5 drops in a dollop of lotion for each section of my body. I made sure I was rubbing it in evenly. I washed my hands immediately. I did not have any discoloration in the morning when I woke up. It is even and a healthy glow. The St. Tropez added on top will give it an even better bronzier look.

I don't get how this got so many good reviews. I have tried three different applications with different lotions and each time it has been blotchy, streaky and orange. I wanted to try this as a cheeper alternative to the Tan Lux drops, but sadly this isn't it.
Just WOW! I love this!!!

Not very effective

Directions state to use 1 - 12 drops with a moisturizer. I've used about 15 drops per leg and see minimal results. I'm a white female with a medium tan and am using the "dark" product.
Works so well
Aliyah from Pennsylvania
I have very pale skin and this is just perfect. It gives me a subtle tan. Also it doesn't leave me orange like many tanners I have tried. The one thing I would say is be careful when mixing with the lotion of your choice. Make sure you mix it evenly otherwise it will get splotchy and streaky on your skin. Overall I would definitely recommend this!
This stuff works but is crazy strong

This stuff works but be very careful, it's crazy strong. I suggest using only half a dropper or less. I used one full dropper and woke up looking like tan mom.
Good, not great

I bought the Tanologist Light drops ( I am extremely fair-skinned) and even after using 12 drops with my moisturizer, I saw barely any difference. However, maybe it's just my moisturizer? I use a lotion with aloe in it.
No streaks, no smell!

This is the first of many self-tanners that I actually like! It delivers gradual color with the typical odor.
Trial & Error - but great when you get it down!
Casey from Atlanta, GA
This product takes a bit of trial and error as in you need to figure out how many drops will work best for you and for each area. I put less on my face as that area seems to get the darkest (make sure to blend aaalll the way to hairline) but once you get your formula down I love the way it looks! And it lasts a full week.
I will buy this product again!
Ashelina from WA
This product actually tans the skin over time. I noticed that certain moisturizers with the serum cause those missed spots or blotches on the skin. I saw a YouTube review of a girl using a scented lotion with the drops. She had some blotches and what looked like areas that didn't blend or rub in well. I think the problem might be the type of moisturizer. Or possibly the way the two products mix together. My scented moisturizer didn't work well with serum because I had some blotches too. They were minimal and not very noticeable. The next day those spots disappeared and my tan was even. When I use the other moisturizer that doesn't have a scent, it blends well and evens the tan out. I use a straight up non scented Aloe hydrating lotion. This Tanologist product is amazing though! I am so happy I saw someone mention it in another review. I didn't know this product was out there! I don't look orange like a fake tan. My skin smells like I've been tanning. The person that created this was ingenious enough to make a self tanning product that actually works! I'll be recommending this to my friends.
Laura from Tennessee
This product works with only one or two drops. It does have a self tanner smell, but that doesn't brother me. The only reason I hesitate to use it is that it stains and makes my larger pores look dark. It goes away once I stop using it, so it's not clogging my pores, but I just don't like the look of my pores being dark.
