I've tried thermal protection sprays from Cantu and Aussie and they both make my hair feel hair and brittle. I can say even as African American woman, my hair type is short, but very thick, and I still love this product. It smells really great and I am glad this was my first CHI product.
I had high hopes for this heat protection spray, as I've used other Chi products and loved them. The first few times I used this, I was super happy because it smelled *amazing* and made my hair shiny. But, over the next few uses, I noticed my hair was going from silky (right out of bed - tangle free!) to dry, rough, and tangly immediately after straightening. I was confused because A) I was using a heat protector and B) it was instantaneous "damage" following the use of heat tools, and went away after washing.
The product sprays on like a protecting wax, very sticky and heavy; You need to brush through it a few times after spraying before you can even think about taking a hot tool to it. I will say my hair is undamaged while using it, but it makes my hair tacky, while causing dryness and matting tangles.

I was doing it all wrong. I applied it to wet hair and I sprayed it all over and when I straightened my hair it would become incredibly stiff and crunchy. I have now figured out that you MUST dry your hair first and then apply the spray in SECTIONS 8-10 inches away, comb it through, and straighten afterwards. My hair is not crunchy, stiff or tangled. I was just doing it wrong.

I just started trying Chi products. So far, I like all that I tried except for Iron Guard. It leaves my hair very dry and at times sticky. I returned the product for a refund.

I had severely heat damaged hair for the longest time but ever since I started using this before using any heat I've noticed my hair stays healthier longer after cuts.

I've been using this product for about 12 years now and it is phenomenal. Some people say it dries the hair out/feels like hairspray - it does UNLESS you comb it through your hair before it dries (you should comb all products through the hair for even distribution). Also, this is an iron guard spray, not a blowdry product, so even though it says you can put in wet hair, it's best on dry hair right before using an iron.

Due to my very fine hair, I need this to help form curls with the curling iron. Without this spray my curls just fall flat after curling

leaves hair dry, heavy, and dull looking. I'll be returning.

When I first applied it I was like the reviews were true that it does make the hair dry! But after I straightened my hair and everything is done my hair went back to normal!! And it smells really nice. So it makes the hair dry only at first then it will be all good after.

It left my hair very dry and felt stiff and crunchy. The smell was nice, but I won't purchase again

I tried this, I just got my hair cut and this product left so much hair on my 3" round brush, the sink, the vanity counter, on my shirt, my arms. I got 4 out of 7 sections done and I was like *puts plastic cap back on and put it back in the ulta bag with the reciept* the worst for my hair. Also left my hair extremely hot to the touch. Two products that do work through many trials and exchanges, OUAI HAIR OIL & bumble and Bumble invisible oil Heat/UV protective Primer. Give that duo a try my dudes!

The only decent thing about this product is the scent. Once the product dries in your hair, it becomes crunchy and you have to rake a comb through it to distribute. Once you brush it through the hair, it is somehow left feeling both sticky and dry??? Can't even comment on how well it protects from heat since I can't even see past how gross it makes my hair feel. I've never hated a product so passionately....

This is the first heat protectant spray I ever used and always stuck with it. I decided to branch out and try others. Some more expensive some less...always went back to this one. This is the best heat protectant there is.

i usually use this product with my revlon hair dryer brush and it's just terrible. does nothing but make my hair tangly and stiff. won't be repurchasing.

Overall this is a good product. I notice very little damage when I use this. The main thing I don't like about it though is for whatever reason my hair takes on a more course texture with it and knots easily. It takes a lot of brushing to keep it semi normal but I also haven't tried other heat product before because I'm partial to Chi. I'm not sure if this is normal or not but as long as it works for what I intend it to do then I'm usually happy.

I wanted to try this product due to the reviews. WRONG! It left my hair sticky and stiff! Glad I only purchased the travel size.

I've heard many great things about this heat protectant and my hair stylist has even used it on me before. My hair always felt so soft after having heat applied to it! The only thing that was weird about this is it had a cologne smell to it. It's so strong that my coworker asked if I was wearing cologne lol. Maybe it was just the one I received because I don't remember it smelling like that when my stylist used it on me.

Once I find someyhing that works and doesn't give me a headache, I stick with it. Have used this product for years.

I tried this product after a recommendation from a store clerk. He said they use it in their own salon at Ulta. i have to say I am not impressed. This stuff is terrible. It stinks for one...smells like you came out of a smoky bar or like insect spray...I can't decide which one. When you spray it on, it globs up and makes your hair feel crunchy and sticky. Plus, it does nothing as far as protecting your hair from heat. After using a flat iron, I have frizzy ends and fly aways all over. I would not recommend this product.
debbie sue from GA
I use it when I use my hot iron to curl the ends of my hair. Does a great job protecting the ends of my hair and I also have my daughter using it on her hair and her 2 daughters hair as well.

great protection from heat styling tools

Use this with either regular or keratin Chi, helps strengthen, hold, & protect my baby fine hair, cruelty-free, use sparingly, as it can build up on fine hair between washings.

This product works well, but it's not BETTER than other products I've tried, including my current favorite, Sebastian Trilliant, although Trilliant is slightly more expensive. I would stick with my drugstore preference- Loreal heat protectant over this spray but continue using the Chi Total Protect to give my hair the feel I prefer.
Cheri from TX
This spray is great! It leaves your hair feeling silky and smooth, not sticky and yucky. It keeps your hair from getting damaged and frizzy.
Queen_v from West Palm Beach
I wanted to love this product but it seriously leaves my hair so sticky, impossible to brush, it feels like I'm spraying hairspray into dry hair & yes I have tried with wet hair and it is just as bad. Don't wast your money!!
Becca from Modesto
Great, i guess it's sticky when i put it on but after I use my curling wand it goes away along with the scent ( if you don't like it ) but you know everyone has different hair types so use hair care that works for you
