Most Helpful Positive Review Good Product for Normal/Oily Hair, But Not for Me
I've always had spiral curls, until a few years ago when my hair got longer and my hormones shifted. My hair now ventures between shapeless frizz and mostly curly with a handful of spirals. I used this product and its conditioner until the bottles were almost empty. While I liked it, I won't be repurchasing it. Here's why:
*Cruelty-free = This company is cruelty-free, which means it never tests on animals, and it isn't owned by a parent company that tests on animals either, like many of the "cruelty-free" brands out there.
*Curl Defining = This line is called Curl Defining, so this aspect is arguably the most important. I will say: It does define my curls! I noticed my spirals come back in a way that I haven't seen in a while, especially when I just finger combed my hair. However, it defined them regardless of the combing method.
*Undressed Formula = There are no parabens, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic dyes, or, importantly for curly hair, silicones. It is also gluten-free. It is hard to find a formula this comprehensive and natural, especially for this price.
*Amount = Instead of the regular 12oz, these bottles are 16oz.
*Pump Dispenser = Need I say more? It's convenient access and easy to measure with.
*Price = It is over drugstore pricing, but under comparable products. See amount and formula.
*Moisturizing = There is only one con for me, which unfortunately requires that I find another product. I have very dry hair that will get brittle and unruly if it isn't adequately moisturized. These things happened over the course of my using this product.
The thing is: This product doesn't claim to be a deep moisturizer. It claims to wash and define curls. It does both of those things. I did find that if I left the conditioner in 3-5 minutes versus 1-2, my hair was definitely better moisturized and silkier. However, I live a more fast-paced lifestyle and my hair probably still needs the extra moisture mile.
I will still use/try from this brand!
Most Helpful Critical Review Well, it smells good...
I've tried so many products for curly hair and I really like NYM as a whole, but this shampoo was just so-so. The fragrance was great, I'll give you that. But apart from the delightful scent, this shampoo didn't do much for my wavy hair. It didn't seem to get my scalp as clean as I would hope and it felt quite drying -- my hair was a bit knotted after washing it (and the weak conditioner by NYM was no match for the knots it created). It certainly wasn't the worst shampoo I've used, but it definitely wasn't close the best. #contest

The only redeeming thing about this shampoo is the smell, all it did was leave my hair greasy.
Probably will not buy again

The product was hyped up on the internet as great for curly/wavy hair. It falls into the low-poo category of shampoos. It cleaned my wavy/curly hair without drying it out. The smell of the product was a little off putting. To me, it smelled like pet shampoo. Once my hair was dry the smell went away. I think that NYM has better products on the market. I probably will not re-purchase this one.
Worst Shampoo I've Ever Used
Meg from Tennessee
Decided I would try this after seeing it at the Ulta. It was so terrible and it made my hair so greasy at the roots. No matter how long I stood and scrubbed at it to get all the shampoo out, by the time I got out and let it dry it was still greasy. I even used it for a couple weeks hoping my hair would adjust, but no luck. Wouldn't recommend to anyone.
Horrible. hair loss and drying
Tiff from South Carolina
I used it for about a month and my hair started breaking off. No matter how much conditioner you use, your hair will be dry. My hair was always silky but now it is dry, frizzy, and breaking off my scalp hurts so bad every day. I can't even run my fingers through my hair anymore :( and it's thinning badly around my hairline. I am switching back to garnier. How this stuff is still being sold, I have no idea. I am not the only one having this problem. I hope the damage will not be permanent

I like this shampoo it smells good but it doesn't clean my roots very well I would wash my hair and it would get greasy the next day I now use Maui moisture.

Gives my waves some bounce! Even a couple cute ringlets here and there :) So light, my hair loves this. Fantastic smell.
I Love It!

I have used this shampoo a couple times now and my hair loves it. It has a nice leather and it doesn't leave my hair excessively dry and stripped after rinsing. I recommend it! What I love most is that it's free of silicones, Parabens, dyes, gluten, sulfates, & phthalates!!
Don't listen to the bad reviews, haters lol

My girls are black white and hispanic. My oldest has wavy/frizzy hair and my youngest has a thick curly frizzy mop! The shampoo and conditioner is amazing I could get the brush through without excess product! Love the pumps too!
Don't buy this
Kass from New York
The shampoo is greasy and doesn't clean, it takes multiple uses to feel like my scalp is clean. The conditioner is not moisturizing at all and doesn't help to get out tangles. I have to use the conditioner multiple times and can't wash it out fully or else my hair would be extremely dry.

I got this shampoo & the conditioner for my wavy hair. It was kind of awful. It did nothing for my waves except make them frizzy. I had a constant feeling of buildup and gunkiness. I used it for a week to be sure it wasn't just an adjustment or that I hadn't washed all the conditioner out. Dry or wet my hair felt awful, it was tangling like crazy, and had an increase in breakage. The good parts were the smell & my hair looked clean despite how it felt. Would not recommend.

I have medium coarse thick wavy/curly hair. This product felt heavy, drying, did not help frizz, and made my curls look less defined. I did use with the matching conditioner which was also drying for me. This smells amazing and has cute packaging but just does not work for my hair type. I also don't care for pumps on smaller bottles like this. If you know your hair likes heavy products than I would say give it a try. I like the African Marula Oil line way better.. it makes my curls look great, I plan to try the Blue Kale line next.
Works great on kinky/coily hair

My daughter has 4a-4c hair. I washed her hair with this shampoo and I'm really surprised that it turned out soft. Usually shampoos can be drying, but this actually didn't make her hair feel dried out.
Smells terrible / broken pump
NChair from Raleigh, NC
Have you ever used the lavender scented Raid to kill bugs around the house? This shampoo smells like that. I would have returned it - but when I gently went to remove the tape from the pump that they use during shipping, the pump snapped off. If you can get past the smell it might be a good product.
My favorite shampoo
Nina Naturalista from Los Angeles, CA
This is hands down my favorite shampoo. I have tried a myriad of curly hair products and natural products (even shampoo bars aimed at curly hair) and I have to say Tahitian Gardenia Flower & Mango Butter Curl Defining Shampoo has been the best so far. It is notably gentle and does not strip my natural oils, it has reduced any existing frizziness, and most importantly it keeps my waves and curls in place. I can feel that my hair is "healthier" with this shampoo. I do need to use a clarifying product once a month to get rid of buildup, so if you're looking for something that deep cleans, this is not it. But for this rock climber/hiker/first responder it does the job for daily shampooing. I do think the scent might be too fruity or powerful for some, but fit makes me feel refreshed like I just walked onto a tropical beach with fruity beverages galore.
I wouldn't buy it again

I wouldn't recommend as it helps the frizz increase
Best CGM shampoo I have used
Patience from Indiana
I have wavy hair and have heard a lot about cgm so I wanted to give it a try. I used multiple other shampoos that did not clean my hair and stuck to my hair making my hair feel and look so nasty. This does not do that to my hair! It is great! It makes my hair soft and not dried out compared to shampoos with sulfates/
Excessive hair loss
Naio from San Jose, CA
I liked the NYM's curltalk line, but I found that it weighed my hair down. (I have 2b/c hair) So I wanted to try out this line. I thought it was ok, not as defining as the curltalk line. But after the second wash, my hair started falling out way more than normal, and my scalp was super itchy and dry. I thought it was just me, but my partner also used this and the same thing started happening! We were both really freaked out by how much hair we were shedding. Handfuls of hair. So I decided to look up reviews and found that it's happening to others as well! Safe to say we're ditching this line.
Not good for curls
Rachel from Washington, D.C.
This shampoo worked but left my hair very tangled. I never have a problem detangling but this left my hair knotted and left a harsh residue. My hair felt like straw and brittle after using it and even after conditioning. I tried to use this a second time and got the same results. I expected this to be hydrating/moisturizing but my hair did not feel good after using this. I would not recommend this to anyone who has curly or dry hair. My hair was clean afterwards and looked ok but it felt terrible and dried out very quickly on day 2 and 3, which it never normally does. I tried another shampoo from another naturals line and had the exact same problem.
Not for Curly hair
Mom of 3 from NM
Dries hair out really bad, does nothing for curls. This product actually made my daughter skin peel on and around her ear as well as around her hair line.
Would Not Recommend
PMS from Boulder, CO
I heard a fair amount about this product and learned that it was CGM approved. I had high hopes-- this product seems to work for a lot of people-- but it just wasn't for me. I'll start by saying that the smell is strong and artificial, although I didn't mind it too much. After the first use, I noticed that my hair wasn't as soft and silky as it when I use my other shampoo. I thought it was a fluke so I used it a second time and, again, my hair felt dry. I also feel like my curls just weren't as defined with this product as it is with other shampoos.
I really wanted to like this product but it just didn't seem to suit my hair. Although it seems to work for a lot of people, I wouldn't recommend it based off my own experience.
Was okay at first....
BG from New York, NY
This seemed okay at first... hair felt dry and tangled when I would comb it after the shower and like it had a film when dry, but two weeks later my scalp is dry and flaking. This is going in the trash.
My hair loves this
Kat121 from Los Angeles
The scent is wonderful. It's not a high side shampoo and it gets the job done. My hair is clean but not squeaky clean. It's got body and bounce. I got it for my curls but I often blow it out straight, and it's working well on my straight hair. Lots of body, volume and bounce. I don't even need a flat iron to smooth after the dryer. That's a first. This and the conditioner, along with the detangler also has me rocking second day hair foe the first time ever. I don't even need to put it up, it still feels fresh and clean, even after the hot flash I had last night.
Great for the price
Sarah from Milwaukee, WI
For the price this is a great sulfate free shampoo. Hair feels clean after using it and has a nice lather, it also hasn't irritated my sensitive scalp. The smell is also great! Does it do magic to my waves? No, but it's a decent shampoo.
LOVE this shampoo! My go-to!
Kara from Indiana
I use this shampoo every other day or two, and it's perfect for my hair type (Mix of 2a/2b). A lot of shampoos I've tried (like their royal honey) make my scalp oily after one day, but this is perfect for my scalp and helps define my waves! I do not follow CGM as I can't live without shampoo or heat-styling products, but I would say it's perfect for wavy haired girls like me. Definitely would recommend!!
Mariah from Richmond, VA
My hair has never been so dry and greasy as it is with this product. I washed my hair at night and the next morning you could not tell at all.
