A few tips to help you color with total confidence: SENSITIVITY TEST-It is recommended you do a sensitivity test before using Light Works Balayage Highlighting Kit. Perform test at least 48 hours before use, even if you have already used this or other coloring products. Test represents an important precaution. However, even if a sensitivity test has been carried out, you may still experience an allergic reaction. Test is not a guarantee of avoiding future reactions. Always consult a doctor if you have any questions/concerns. Using a plastic utensil, mix a 1/2 tsp of Toning Glaze with 3/4 tsps Toning Glaze Activator. Use a cotton swab to apply a quarter-sized amount to a small patch of skin behind your ear or inside elbow. Keep dry. Wait 48 hours. If there is no sign or change to the area, then you are ready to color.
STRAND TEST. Do a lightening preview test to determine the approximate timing required to reach your desired degree of lightness. This is particularly important if your hair has been previously chemically treated (see Important Safety Warnings). Create a test strand by selecting a 1/4" wide strand of hair from an underneath section, and place an elastic band 2" from the root. Put on the gloves provided in the kit, and use a plastic spoon or container to thoroughly mix a 1/2 tsp of Lightening Cream thoroughly with 1 teaspoon of Lightening Activator. Apply mixture to the entire strand, and start timing. After 10 minutes, wipe the strand clean. If the hair strand is not light enough, re-apply the highlighting mixture and check it every 5 minutes until you achieve the desired results. Total processing time should not exceed 60 minutes. Rinse and dry the strand. Write down this optimal time duration to use when processing Light Works. Please see the instructions included in your Light Works Balayage Highlighting Kit for the best application to achieve your desired results.

Hi! What is the process if I continue to use the all-over Radiant Cream Color every 3-4 months? Will my highlights stay lighter than my base shade if I dye them, or will I need to avoid the highlights while dyeing with all-over color?
- Asked by Ali
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationHello! If you apply color over color/highlights, the hair the first time may be lighter over lighter pieces, but after that first time, the color will build up and everything will become darker than expected. Was this answer helpful to you
- Q
I have never died my hair before but I want to dye it at my house. Is this an easy product to use since I have never experienced this before?
- Asked by Rookie
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationThank you for reaching out. All our kits come with thorough instructions to help make application as easy and straightforward as possible. We recommend watching tutorials on the application to help familiarize yourself with the process. Was this answer helpful to you
- Q
I have jet black hair… which color set should I be using.
- Asked by Hee
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationHello we can recommend using our Pescara Black, processing for 45min over the new growth/roots. If your lengths need to be refreshed, you can use a wide tooth comb to blend the color through at the last 5-10min before rinsing (If you have longer or thicker hair, you may need two color kits to ensure full saturation). Was this answer helpful to you
- Q
Can I use this on red hair (Copper Cola)? If so, which one would you recommend?
- Asked by Babsie
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationHello, our Light Works Balayage kit can be used over natural hair or color treated hair. The lightener is formulated to lighten around 1-3 levels for a subtle sun-kissed result. The result will vary and depend on each individual's starting point. For example, If your hair is a medium brown level of darkness, with red/copper tones, your highlighted result will likely be a light brown to dark blonde level with golden copper tones. Each kit comes with a demi-permanent toning glaze to use after the highlights are completed. If you would like to minimize the copper tones slightly, we can recommend using the Light Works kit with the Lazio toner. If you would like the tonal results to be as golden copper as possible, we can recommend using the Light Works kit with the Warm Palmi toner. Was this answer helpful to you

can you color and highlight in same day
- Asked by jo

- Q
Does it work on gray hair
- Asked by Dkh
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationHello! Madison Reed Light Works Balayage Kit is designed to add subtle highlights and dimensions to the hair. Light Works is not designed to cover gray hair and for this reason you should use the Radiant Cream Color to cover your roots and touch up grays, and then you can add highlights to your hair. Think of Light Works as an additional accessory to your base hair color! Was this answer helpful to you
- Q
Does this come with a pull through cap
- Asked by Kyla
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationHello! No, the highlight kit comes with a wishbone shaped applicator, to create a balayage style highlight. Was this answer helpful to you
- Q
Does this color gray? If not can this be used in combination with Madison Reed dye that will cover gray and then use this to add the highlights?
- Asked by Cberg
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationThe Light Works kits will blend gray. If you are wanting uniform gray coverage we would recommend coloring the hair to ensure the grays are covered with our Radiant Color Cream. Then you can add the Light Works. Was this answer helpful to you
- Q
Can I bleach my hair out and then be apply?
- Asked by Karen
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationWe would not recommend applying the cream lightener over previously bleached hair, we want to avoid over processing the hair. You can however use the Toning Glaze on lightened or pre-bleached hair. Was this answer helpful to you
- Q
I have dark brown coily hair. Can I use your product to achieve blondish highlights?
- Asked by Rookie
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationHello! Our Light Works Balayage Highlight kit is made to lighten 1-3 shades lighter on colored hair and 1-4 shades lighter on natural hair. The end result does depend on your starting point, so depending on your exact natural color and if your hair is colored or not, blonde may not be possible. We recommend taking our color quiz for your best match: https://www.madison-reed.com/color-advisor-ultaWas this answer helpful to you
- Q
i have medium dark brown hair , i want brown and redish mix highlight , how and which kit i should buy it. i don't want to bleach my hair too.
- Asked by Kirti
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationHello! The Light Works Balayage Highlight kit does use a clay bleach lightener to add highlights as hair color does not have the ability to lighten hair color. If your hair is completely natural, we recommend going to a salon to add highlights if you want to avoid using bleach lightener. Was this answer helpful to you
- Q
Hello, I've used the regular hair color kit (only the coloring items) and was okay with the scent. Is this kit similar in scent?
- Asked by Teach
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationOur color is fragrance free, however the cream bleach lightener has a slight scent unique to that product only. The rest of the components in the kit are fragrance free like our regular kits. Was this answer helpful to you
- Q
I have dark brown hair naturally that I highlight with bleach. I haven't had to go to the salon in about 2 months. My roots have grown out about an inch and a 1/2. I still have a good amount of blonde in my hair from the foiled bleach highlights. I want to get a medium brown to a blonde set. Would that work on my hair? No gray btw.
- Asked by Valerie
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationHello! You can use our Light Works kit to blend in your previous highlights, however we do recommend waiting till you have about 4 inches of new growth so it is easier to blend in the line. Was this answer helpful to you
- Q
I have medium brown hair. Before Covid I would do blonde highlights at home. I want to do highlights again but want more of a caramel look, maybe one shade lighter than my natural hair. What do you suggest?
- Asked by Mom of 3
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationOur balayage highlighting kits can lighten around 1-3 levels for a subtle sun-kissed result. All of the kits will come with a toner, which is step 2 of the process. We can recommend the Light Works balayage kit with the Lazio toning glaze. This toner will help to neutralize some of the brassy tones that result when hair is lightened for a more neutral (but still warmer) result. Was this answer helpful to you

I have medium length 4c natural jet-black hair I've beach my hair I'm the pass with turn out to be a no no it really dried out my hair bad I had to cut and start over. My question is I would love to switch from jet-black to a caramel color Would I be able to achieve that color using your product? also I would like to know which kit I need to buy.
- Asked by Da
- Official Answer By Madison Reed - SyndicationMadison Reed Radiant Cream Color is formulated with a 20 volume activator, and like most permanent hair color lines, can not lift previously colored hair. Our Radiant Cream Color can lift natural, uncolored hair 1-2 levels lighter. To lighten previously colored hair or if you are looking for a dramatic change, we recommend you go to a salon for this type of service. We would love to consult after on products to maintain your new look. Was this answer helpful to you

I am blown away that I did this!
I was very excited to try, but was equally nervous about my ability to apply the lightener with precision. The process starts with the bottom layers and you work your way up which led to a comfortability throughout the learning curve. I am blown away that I did this! What else do these guys have?

From a former hairdresser, poor quality kit
I used this product according to the package directions. I have light brown hair, so I was imagining I would achieve a lightness similar to what is pictured. I was met with a lot of problems from the beginning. The lightening product began to clump inside the bottle, making even application very dif...

I have dark brown hair . This does NOT leave my hair brassy at all. It's the perfect caramel color I've always liked . The price increased which I'm not happy with but I trust this product and have been using it for three years .
Worked well

The product worked well. I have short hair so the horse shoe wand did not work for me. I had to buy a highlighting kit from the drugstore. There were detailed directions regarding highlighting shorter hair, but I did not see a short hair kit on the website. I will be ordering the product again now that I have a better understanding of how to use it.
