How to Contour Lips

Achieving a flawless, plump lip contour comes down to a precise, step-by-step application.

1. Prep and Prime

Start with a smooth canvas. Gently exfoliate your lips with a sugar scrub to remove dry skin, then apply a hydrating lip balm. Blot away any excess balm with a tissue so your lip products can adhere properly without slipping.

2. Define the Base

Lightly pat a small amount of concealer or translucent powder over your lip lines. This neutralizes your natural lip border, cancels out redness, and acts as an anchor to keep your lip liner from feathering or bleeding throughout the day.

3. Trace and Overline (The Illusion)

Take a sharpened lip liner that is one to two shades darker than your natural lip color or chosen lipstick.

·       The Cupid's Bow: Draw an "X" at the highest points of your upper lip. To create a plumper look, you can slightly overline just the very top of the "X".

·       The Bottom Lip: Draw a small horizontal line right along the center of your lower baseline, slightly overlining only in the very middle.

·       The Corners: Connect the lines from the center out to the corners of your mouth, keeping the liner strictly inside your natural lip line as you approach the outer edges to avoid a droopy appearance.

4. Shade and Blend

To create depth, map out your shadows. Draw three soft vertical lines with your liner: one down the center of the bottom lip, and two on the upper lip framing the Cupid's bow. Softly shade the outer corners of your lips, blending inward with a lip brush or your fingertip while leaving the very center bare.

5. Highlight the Center

Apply your primary lipstick—which should be a shade lighter than your liner—across the entire lip, gently tapping to blend it with the darker edges. For maximum poutiness, dab a touch of an even lighter shade, a cream highlighter, or a clear lip gloss directly onto the center of your lips to catch the light.

Topping it off with a lipstick or gloss adds a fresh finish that you can reapply throughout the day. For the longest-wearing results, press a thin layer of liner across the entire lip before applying your stain.

How to make lips appear fuller?

Line just outside your natural lip line—keep it subtle and close to the edge for a natural look. Then layer a lighter lipstick or a glossy topper in the center of your lips to draw the eye inward and create the illusion of more volume.
