- Step 1: To create the best blank canvas for your color, we recommend that you first lighten your hair with the easy-to-use GDY Lightening Kit. This is because the semi-permanent dye shows up best on level 9 or 10 light blonde hair. You can use DYEposit in Platinum to pre-tone the hair to remove any yellow tones.
- Step 2: Squeeze your color into the GDY Biodegradable Tool Kit. Remember: wear gloves to prevent staining on your hands.
- Step 3: Do a strand test on a piece of hair in the lower back portion of your head before applying the color all over your hair to ensure you love the look!
- Step 4: Divide your hair into 4 equal sections and apply dye directly onto dry hair. Make sure the color is fully saturated throughout each section by applying a dollop of color for every two inch portion of your hair. Gently emulsify/massage into the hair to ensure coverage.
- Step 5: Let the color sit on your hair for at least 30 minutes.
- Step 6: Rinse very well with cool water only. If desired, use Color Kind Wash and Rinse to remove any residual dye. Shampoo and conditioner are not required, however.
- Step 7: Style your freshly dyed locks just the way you like.

Hello! I have virgin blonde hair and was wanting to do some pink highlights for the summer. Is this semi-permanent hair dye easy to come out? I don't want it to be stuck in my hair forever.
- Asked by Ava
- Official Answer By Good Dye Young - Brand EngageGood Dye Young's semi-permanent colors are made with salon-grade pigments, and will last for 16-24 washes. Some of our more pigmented shades, like Ex-Girl, may leave behind a slight halo of tint beyond 24 washes. The results of hair color removal and fading vary from person to person. Pink Puff is our pastel pink, and may leave a slight color payoff on your natural blonde hair, but will have the fastest fade out for you. If you need to fade your color FAST, you can try these helpful tips: Use clarifying shampoos. Scrub your hair in hot water for best results! Vitamin C treatments: mix vitamin C powder with your shampoo, apply to damp hair, let sit under heat for around 20-30 minutes, and rinse. This should start stripping color out of the hair without opening the cuticle. Was this answer helpful to you

I have dirty blonde hair with highlights and got the color "Blue Ruin". How long should this last on my hair?
- Asked by Parker
- Official Answer By Good Dye Young - Brand EngageThanks for reaching out. You can expect to have vibrant results for 16-24 washes with the shade Blue Ruin. Vibrant hair color will show up best on pre-lightened hair, si you will see more color payoff on the highlighted strands of hair. If your natural hair is dirty blonde, your base most likely has orange-y undertones, and Blue Ruin will be a dusty dark blue on those areas. Blue dye molecules typically penetrate the cuticle and last, so you may not see the color fade out fully. Was this answer helpful to you
- Q
after the color has washed out will my hair still be stained at all or will my hair go back to my natural color?
- Asked by charlotte
- Official Answer By Good Dye Young - Brand EngageThanks for asking! Semi-Permanent hair dye is designed to fade out over time. It's made up of pigments that primarily sit on the hair cuticle, and don't penetrate the hair shaft. There are a lot of factors that will play into how long the color will last in your hair. Porous hair may hold onto color longer than non-porous hair. Darker shades with more pigment may take longer to fully fade. If you pre-lighten your hair, you are opening up the cuticle, allowing the color to hold on longer. If you wish to fade a color faster, you can wash your hair more frequently in warm/hot water with a clarifying shampoo. Was this answer helpful to you

Do i use all of the proudct? Or do i use a specific amount and can i use it again?
- Asked by Aj
- Official Answer By Good Dye Young - Brand EngageThanks for reaching out. This depends on the length, thickness and texture of your hair. On average, a person will probably need 2 bottles of dye for their hair. If you have what you would consider to be more than average hair in length or thickness then adjust accordingly. Once opened, our dyes will last up to 12 months after being opened. Simply seal up your unused portion and store in a cool, dry place. Was this answer helpful to you

Please bring more GDY to Ulta!
I absolutely adore Good Dye Young and it's my go to for colorful hair. I just wish more shades were available along with the hair care products (I love the scrub)! I must say though if you're having issues with longevity then I would recommend looking into hair care tips for direct semi permanent dy...

Inconsistent Application | Out in 1 Wash
Envious of the reviewer who said theirs wouldn't wash out - mine did after 1 wash (Matrix color safe shampoo) T_T after also applying unevenly on my hair (waited required duration - 35 - 40 mins) ✊ the uneven part wasn't too big of a deal - looked cute it if would have stayed put, albeit weird since...

Good product
Hair Type Straight Hair
This dye was easy to apply and the color turned out well. I like to repeat applications so the color gets darker each time. The instructions were easy to follow but you had to cut open the box because they were printed on the other side.
Pink Puff
I bought this product on a whim! I've been dying to go back to pink, but need to keep it subtle for work. I had highlights from a previous salon trip about a year ago, so I just put it over those all-over highlights. The color is exactly what I was looking for, it's hard to find a true pale/light pink, most pinks are either bright or rose gold, but this is a true soft pink shade. I put it on my dry hair, left on for 30 minutes, and washed it out. It left my hair super soft, but next time, I'm going to leave it in longer for a more vibrant transformation. If you have thick hair (like I do), buy 2. It also says "no shampoo required," to remove the dye after the 30 minutes, but I always shampoo my hair when coloring it. Also, make sure to have gloves on hand, this product does not include gloves, which was my only complaint. I also read other reviews about the color bleeding after application, but I haven't had that issue.
Mperfect for cherry cola hair
I really wanted to try something bolder so I looked up a color for a cherry cola look that wasn't too red and when I went there Ulta didn't have it so I got this instead because i didn't want to wait. So so happy I got this, even without using bleach I think it looks really good over my light brown hair and gave me a great shine and wash of red. I did it a month ago and you can still see the red so I would say it lasts pretty good too.
good colors, mostly
I like the pinks and the oranges, those have been amazing! However the teal, Narwhal, isn't even close to the color advertised! I had to do some digging and managed to find a TikTok of them swatching the colors because I thought I got a bad batch, it came out way too dark! Definitely not what I wanted
Dream big is DARK blue
Hair Type Wavy Hair
I wanted some peekaboo color but didnt want to go too bright with it and thought that dream big was going to be the perfect color. I left it on for 45 minutes and after washout I was worried that it was too dark and hard to see against my natural color but after 2 washes in hot water it's started to lift a little bit and now I'm really in love with it. Next time I am trying Blue ruin
