Hair Type Wavy Hair
I've tried a few of Ethique's prior block-shaped bars before, and this moon shape feels awkward to me (my hands are small). I understand that the shape is supposed to make it easier to wipe the bar over the hair. However, the wiping application tended to concentrate the product in one spot and made it difficult to rinse. This formula creates enough lather for me in the hands, so I just lathered then applied it to my hair. At first, it seemed to work well enough and rinsed more easily. But after about a month, despite using a clarifying shampoo bar every week, this Hydrating bar shampoo made my medium-coarse wavy hair unruly and feeling dry. I'm guessing there is some residue-causing ingredient that my hair does not like. My hair instantly felt and behaved better after switching back to a liquid shampoo. I still occasionally use Ethique's older St. Clements (citrus) bar as a clarifying shampoo, so I am not against using shampoo bars. This formula just didn't work well in my experience.

I used to use Mintasy shampoo from Ethique. This new shampoo bar leaves my hair in just as good of condition, and doesn't set off my allergies, which is great. It also doesn't dissolve quite as readily as Mintasy, which is a good thing. That means less drying time before I pack, and getting to actually use more of the product. However, the sickly-sweet scent is very off-putting, and the new shape makes this shampoo *much* more difficult to travel with. I used to be able to fit one of the little trapezoidal face washes, a half of a conditioner bar, and a half of a shampoo bar in a small travel case. The new bars don't even fit in Ethique's own travel cases! The colors of shampoo and conditioner are so similar that, once cut down for travel, they become hard to tell apart. The crescent and wedge shapes are so similar that once cut down for travel, they are indistinguishable. Overall, this feels like a big down-grade from my old Ethique products.

I tried pairing this shampoo with the curl defining conditioner and was really happy with the result. Can definitely tell a difference, even after one use; it improved the dryness, made my hair softer and shinier. The shape of the bar fits well in my hand and on my scalp. The bar is very big (which is great in the sense that it will last a long time) but for travel purposes I would love a mini size.

I had tried Ethique a few years ago and it really dried out my hair with long term use. I have been using this moisturizing bar for a couple of weeks and it is really quite a turn around from the pinkalicious and mintasy that left my hair and scalp a bit dehydrated. I am an almost daily washer from sweaty training sessions and this cleans yet keeps my hair smooth, hydrated, and NOT weighed down a bit! :) Glad Ethique brought us these new formulations!!!
