I've been on an endless hunt for a daily SPF that doesn't irritate my skin. I'm one of the "lucky" ones who seems utterly incompatible with SPF, whether mineral or not. I thought I found my holy grail with Super Goop's Zinc Screen, but as many positives as it has - the greasiness was something I could not get over. I really liked Biossance's original SPF 45 - then they discontinued it. I opted to give Kinship a shot for 2 reasons: a. the reviews were mostly positive b. it was on the cheaper side for a higher end sunscreen.
I've been using it daily for over a week and these are my initial impressions:
1. I have not had any irritation, which is rare.
2. It has not aggravated my acne or caused any new breakouts at this point.
3. It does have a slight cast upon initial application, but it seems to blend away pretty efficiently and becomes undetectable after soaking in to the skin. I do have a light skin tone, however, so I'm not sure how much more difficult it might be to blend on darker skin tones.
4. It does smell like cupcakes and the scent is detectable for anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes, at which point it disappears. The smell does not bother me, even though I'm not a fan of pastry scents for my skincare.
5. None of that classic sunscreen smell, which is usually a common issue with mineral sunscreens.
6. It has a dewier finish, though it is not oily or greasy. I do have oilier skin and it makes my skin look healthy and glow-y. That said, as your skin gets oilier throughout the day, it will obviously look shinier and the finish of this SPF will not aid that - but I find mattifying SPFs to be too drying so this is a small issue I am willing to deal with.
I apply this in the morning, on top of a moisturizer, so I cannot speak to its moisturizing benefits. But based on the consistency and how my skin feels - oilier skin types may be able to get away with this as their only moisturizer if they wanted to.
This contains Non-Nano Zinc Oxide. Based on my research, this is one of the best ingredients in sunscreen in regards to being reef safe and is better than typical Zinc Oxide found in sunscreens. I applaud Kinship for this, but this is where the praise stops.
The third ingredient is Coconut Alkane. This is an extremely concentrated form of Coconut Oil. I think it's bogus of Kinship to put on the bottle (not the box) that this sunscreen is great for blemish-prone skin but have something NOT recommended for blemish prone skin and is very pore clogging as the third ingredient. Don't know why other reviewers say this formula is greasy? THIS is why. It feels greasy and thick and it just feels like something is on my skin.
I think this would have great potential if they just remove the coconut alkane. I don't know with what since I don't know the other options to keep this sunscreen vegan and organic, but if they could reformulate it to actually make it blemish-prone friendly I think that would be amazing.

I love this product. Adds a beautiful glow to the skin that looks AMAZING in the sun. I would say if you have acne prone skin it's probably not the best sunscreen for you, but I'll take the glow with a few blemishes.

I have what I consider to be dry skin, I frequently struggle with foundation patchiness issues just because my skin wants to be dry. Yet this sunscreen made my skin so oily that I was wishing I had blotting papers. I was really going to give it a real try with multiple days, but after this first I just can't stand how it feels or smells.

I started using this product after seeing it recommended but someone on Instagram. Absolutely love it as a winter SPF when my face is feeling extra dry. Glowy-finish that doesn't feel heavy and doesn't break me out!

This sunscreen gives such a nice glow and works well under makeup. However, it is not waterproof so you cannot wear it swimming.

I have combo/sensitive skin and this SPF works great. It easily glides on top of all of my other skincare products and does not leave a white cast. There is no hard rubbing and it absorbs into the skin quickly. I will buy this again!

It's an impressively light and emollient formula for having over 20% zinc oxide. But I've found that the longer the tube is open, the more chance that the zinc starts to slightly clump, so I have to take extra care to properly disperse/ mix the product on my wrist/ hand before I apply it to my face, but it mixes easily and sinks into skin nicely once applied, no white cast even on my fair/light skin. The only problem for me is that this formula will be way too moisturizing during humid summer months - this formula will slide right off my face. But for most months of the year, this is my GO TO facial zinc sunscreen. It's really great at a fair price point.

this is a really good sunscreen. my skin loved it. it dried down nicely, and I still had a lovely glow to my skin.

I tried this product summer 2021 after seeing it advertised. I had been using MDSolarScience mineral sunscreen, which had been great for years. Maybe as I am aging my skin is drying. So I needed something with more moisture! This fit what I needed!

This is by far my favorite sunscreen. I love the Tula Protect and Glow, but this is even better for extremely dry, extremely sensitive skin. It is super moisturizing, without being greasy. I love that it doesn't leave a white cast on my skin either. This is one to stock up on whenever possible. I will forever recommend this to everyone.

A lot of people are saying it is greasy and irritating but this is the best sunscreen I have ever used! It does not cause me to breakout like every other sunscreen, I find that it is not greasy and makes my face feel moisturized and gives it a healthy looking glow. I have dry skin in some areas, oily in others, rough texture, rosacea, you name it but this product works so well for me and I can not go a day without it! Definitely works better for pale skin like mine because even though it is tinted it is very light in color, but for me it blends well

I really like this product. I'm so glad that it's a tinted mineral sunscreen. It does make me look a little bit paler, but not too bad. I don't recommend it if you have darker skin, but it fits me well. I love how glowy and dewy it makes my skin look. Use this with some caution though, I wait at least 5 mins after I put moisturizer on to use this. Then I wait at least 10 mins before I put makeup on top of this. It's perfect if you wait between products.

The cast it left on my skin was a hard no. I wanted to love it but the cast was so awful that I had to wipe it off.

Good sunscreen, has never irritated my skin, obvious white cast that makes my teeth look even more yellow than they already are. Terrible primer, my makeup looks awful on top of this. I wear this when my skin is clear. I have extremely dry skin, and it makes my face sticky. Not good primer tho.

I have pale, sensitive, dry skin & I'm in love with this sunscreen! It has also lasted me a super long time, I'm almost done with the smaller bottle & will be repurchasing the larger bottle. I typically wear this under a tinted moisturizer & my skin looks healthy & glowing all day. Can't recommend enough!

So disappointed! I have melanated skin and this sunscreen is NOT IT!!!! DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY NOT EVEN ON A SALE??
Mikey from Oregon
I work somewhere where I have to wear a mask all day and I've found while wearing this product, if I sweat even a little bit, it smells like wet dog. And not a hint of wet dog, it smells like WET DOG.
I've tried a LOT of sunscreens and have never experienced this before.
Other than that it looks and feels nice, I just can't get over the smell.

At first it was ok i gave it a chance but ultimately i hated it. very thick primer type of feeling, smells like old makeup, burns my eyes, and white cast. would not purchase again.

I did not like this SPF at all. I have dry skin and it felt very drying on my face (after feeling very sticky and mask like at first). It pilled when reapplied or tried with makeup. Overall I was disappointed and will be returning. Much better options out there especially at this price point
Marlee from Georgia
I wanted to love it, especially since I'm such a sucker for cute packaging. HOWEVER, instead of a white cast, it left me looking yellow- likely due to the tint that's in the formula that is not melanin friendly. I had people ask if I was sick.
The consistency is also kind of thick, which ended up feeling suffocating on my oily, acne prone skin. Just as a warning for my fellow POC and/or oily skin friends!

I'm fair skinned and wear sunscreen everyday. I've been looking for a mineral sunscreen because the chemical ones are so awful for the environment. This sunscreen leaves no noticeable cast on me, applies smooth and even, and reflects beautifully. The only mineral sunscreen I like better is Bliss Block Star, but it's tinted and I don't always want that (like before a run). Truly a 5-star product for me - it is above and beyond the other dozen or so mineral sunscreens I've used!
Mimi from San Francisco, CA
Stop romanticizing this product by saying that it's "dewy", it's GREASY-hair sticks on your skin and it stays greasy and sticky throughout the day. As others have mentioned, this product might be more ideal for those with super dry skin, not for normal or oily skin. It could also work as primer,
but I dont wear makeup. I'm just trying to finish the bottle at this point and what I've found helpful with minimizing the greasiness is topping it off with a powder sunscreen.
As with other mineral sunscreens, this will leave a slight white cast (I have brown skin). It also melts easily and will leave white blotches if you sweat even a little.
3 stars for the the pleasant scent. For those with normal or oily skin who might want more of a matte/smaller pores finish, try SuperGoop Mattescreen - it's more pricey but my skin loves it! Works well on my skin tone.

It's dewy and makes my skin feel nice. I always come back to this sunscreen & it never disappoints (ingredients are a plus!). Didn't give it 5 stars because it doesn't sit well with makeup it peels, you have to have a good primer & it will be fine :).

I know there are mixed reviews on how this sits on the skin. I have oily skin but I love it. you just have to layer it on. I add a little at a time and build coverage. the slight tint looks great and my skin looks very healthy
T from NC
True, there is no white cast (on my light, freckled skin), but it goes on oily and stays oily. I enjoy the scent, it spreads well, & it reapplies nicely (if you don't mind looking even shinier haha). It certainly isn't drying! At the end of the day I can't wait to get it off my face and I feel embarrassed for having been out in the world once I see my face in the mirror. My face looks the same in this sunscreen as does before I wash off my oil cleanser.. Defintely NOT repurchasing.
