It is important to start taking care of your skin at any age. I didn’t really do much with it when I was a teenager, years ago. I was somewhat of a sun worshiper and got several bad sunburns. As time when on, in my 20’s through my 50’s , I started to be more mindful, making sure that: 1) I kept my hands away from my face , 2)washed my face twice a day, 3) removed my makeup before bed, and to wear sunscreen. I missed covering my face fully with sunscreen at Disney one summer, and I ended up with melasma for awhile. Now, in my 60’s, I get great compliments on my skin when my husband and I are out!

As a lighter hued Black woman, making sure that certain brands carry products that are tailored to Black skin is of the utmost importance to me. Since my skin tone is light, in different seasons I’m constantly having to test various shades of foundations to make sure they match as close as possible. Being able to see an extensive range of shades for members of the Black diaspora is necessary so that we can enjoy beauty products for every day use or special occasions. I love makeup because it has the power to make you feel and look like yourself, highlighting your best features. But it also holds the magic of transforming you, boosting your confidence, expressing your personality, and reminding you how beautiful you are—no matter the style you choose. Ultimately, makeup doesn't change who you are; it simply helps you show the best version of yourself.
