While holding lower portion with one hand grip upper portion towards bottom of barrel with the back of your hand facing you and then twist clockwise with a slight downward motion. I've never been good at styling my hair and traditional curling irons always leave crimps. First time I used this wand I was amazed at the waves I created. I would highly recommend this wand.
