I'm not sure of the black substances, however I believe it is the charcoal in the setting spray, however I don't understand why it would come out black if it's meant to go on top of your make up? I thought my eyebrow pencil smeared and my mascara bled, but it was just the spray. Overall, I'd say you're better off buying a high end matte setting spray instead of this. I shake it very well so that is not the issue. The first week I used it, there were no issues snd my makeup was flawless looking. On day 6, i gave it a good shake and sprayed it all over my face. To my horror, it looked like I was playing outside in the dirt and i had to redo my makeup. I imagine they will either take this off the shelves or reformulate it to remove the black coloring. I cant give this one another try because i cant afford to have to redo my makeup and start all over again when i am heading out to work or an event. Once is enough for me.
