Lemme say this first, this was a pain in the butt to shake. Like a few others, I got a bottle where the pigment seemed to separate from the oil. I knew it wasn't an actual issue when I looked into it more. The founder gave a tip on their website to leave the bottle upside down for a bit and tap the bottle to help shake the fluid. You'll know when you've mixed it enough. trust me. When I started shaking it, there was a distinct sloshing noise and then all of a sudden the sloshing stops and it just feels hard to shake. I tested the serum on the back of my hand again and it's all mixed! Anyway, for some reference, I wear shade "Baikal" in the Ilia skin serum tint and I would consider myself a type III on the fitzpatrick scale. I am a banana (aka yellow). Here are my impressions so far! TEXTURE: After it finally mixed, (ngl it took maybe 15 minutes of consistent shaking after let it sit upside down) the serum is still runny. It's a serum after all. TINT: After comparing it, I realized that the color of the tint is very similar to Ilia's baikal shade. It's probably why I gravitated toward this specific tinted serum. I believe the R&R sun serum is just a smidge darker but even though I say that, it's one of those "Oh, the shade is definitely close enough that I can wear both and no one would notice" type of close. If you're looking for some actual coverage, I don't believe you'll find much with this. Yes, the tint is helpful in camouflaging the white cast of mineral sunscreen but the pigment isn't able to offer you too coverage. This is one of the redeeming features though! The color and sheerness of the tint is what makes this serum so adaptable to a lot of skin tones, but not all. If you're putting on enough, you will likely see some of the serum's tint but maybe putting it on layer by layer will help tone down some of that tint. SMELL: I've heard people say that it smells bad, it really doesn't. It's an unscented serum so all we can really smell are the ingredients. I feel like the natural scent of the ilia skin tint is stronger (not necessarily smellier, just stronger) than this serum. The scent isn't stuck with you all day, it'll go away. APPLICATION: For something like this, I always slap it on with my hands (not literally slapping). I have dry skin and I enjoyed the bit of hydration that this serum brought to my face. I also have acne and I believe it did a decent job not sticking to the dry patches near my embarrassingly picked pimples. Initial application, I noticed some dewiness but it didn't go into greasy territory. The dewiness settled down for me, but like I said, I have dry skin and I also live in a dry climate. I could see how the dewiness could stay or worsen in more humid places. SPF: I can't speak on this too much because I only got this serum recently. I am a nerd about stuff like this so be prepared. I do enjoy the PA++++ designation which is supposed to indicate that the serum is able to protect our skin from UVA (the rays that cause skin aging and cancer) at least 16x better than without any protection. But the "+" designation isn't the same across the board, so I will likely reach out to the company to see how they've measured it and what the UVA protection has actually been measured to be. If you got this far, thanks for reading! If I can update this review, I will but if not, I'll likely post an updated review once I get a chance to use this more.
This is a nice unique product. I really like it. I LOVE the packaging. This bottle is perfect! Really keeps the ingredients fresh. My skin is light (not fair) with yellow to neutral undertones and although I buy my foundations and tinted moisturizers in shades for light to medium skin tones, not just light, because I like a little color on my face to warm it up this is too dark for my skin. It makes my complexion look muddy/dirty. I love the way it applies and stays on. I love the high SPF and how amazing that it's water resistant! It's glowy and makes my skin texture look great, smooth and poreless. Ive only worn this a few times and I thought my skin felt a little irritate or dry after the last time I wore it. I am very sensitive and that happens to me often where I'll love a product but can't wear it everyday. I'm going to wear this again soon especially on a day out in the sun even though the shade is too dark for me. I REALLY WISH Undefined would make one more shade for lighter complexions. This is a beautiful shade for full on medium, medium/dark but not very dark complexions. Makes your skin (my skin) look beautiful... it's just too dark for me otherwise it would be a pretty perfect product with everything I'm (and no doubt others are) looking for in a product. You'll love this if you don't want a matte finish and have a medium skin tone complexion. Enjoy! I'll be jealous

At first I didn't like this sunscreen bc it was so runny that it went through my fingers like water which caused a mess in my bathroom. But I started applying it directly on my face and overtime the consistency in the bottle gradually became thicker. I like how it feels on my skin and the medium shade works with my complexion with no white cast.

Its watery, hard to apply, sticky, messy and greasy once applied. It doesn't replace foundation on light make-up days which was my hope. It's so watery I question if its even rreaching 50 SPF because its almost IMPOSSIBLE to apply an even coat. Its a mess!

I love this! Luckily my bottle is great and has never separated. The tint is perfect for my medium skin. I just let it sit and dry for five minutes before applying makeup and it works great under makeup! I watched the latest video from one of my fave youtubers HotandFlashy and she said the company has fixed the problem and they're coming out with two new shades! Not sure if or when those will be available on Ulta's site, but if you have a bad bottle email the company and they should replace it.

I love this sunscreen for the face, under makeup. You need to shake it like crazy to get the right conistency, but i dont mind. This looks luminous and dewy under makeup. I dont use a primer when i wear this. It also may not be best for very oily skin.

The consistency of the Undefined R&R Serum was quite a pleasant surprise for a mineral sunscreen! I loved how well it sinks into skin with no white cast--and it is water based so did not irritate me or break me out. The universal shade is too warm/yellow toned/and dark for me as I'm very pale, but I could see it working on many others well. And, I found I could mix it with other waterbased products that were too light, and it worked out. Unfortunately, though the shelf life wasn't good. The expiration stamp on the box says it should have lasted until 7/2024, and it's 9/2023 and it's already a watery separated mess. Granted, I could not use it daily, but still, it should last. No amount of shaking, turning upside down and tapping, or anything helps. So, this one had great potential, but is a disappointment for me.

I have loved this sunscreen and have been through several bottles. (i do take issue with the shade/tone being universal. I have to mix with a white sunscreen because it is so dark.). The past 2 bottles have been completely off. I used the first bottle for several weeks until it turned watery, separated and was unusable. I checked the expiration date and it was 9/25. Ok so this one went bad a yr early. I opened my 2nd bottle with same exp date and it was exactly the same. From what i am seeing here, im not the only one with this problem. Don't do it!!

I loved this sunscreen and decided to purchase two more bottles when it went on sale. This stuff is completely different now. It had a light, liquidy gel or serum-like consistency before and rubbed into skin easily. Now it's so thin and watery that as soon as I dispense it in my hand it runs right out and all over the place. I couldnt even spread or rub this in. Try pouring water into your hand and then rubbing it "into" your skin and you'll understand the new consistancy this has. Took the two new bottles back and am back on the hunt for a great mineral sunscreen!

I finally feel not alone . I thought i was the only one with a bad batch . When i first got it i fell in love with the product . I went though three bottles 👍so of course i like to have a back up so i bought extra (ulta's sale amazing ) when i opened my bottle it was runny and the oil is separated from the sunscreen, it looks spoiled . I returned it and thought that was it . I have three more new bottles at home so i open another BUT its the same , so I opened my other two AND its the same . I was shaking it over and over but its water down and when i tried using it , it went all over the place . I hope Ulta will refund my money other wise im stack with three bottles. First i though it was only me but when i read the reviews i knew that someting is wrong with the batch. I worte the company but i havent heard anything yet . I hope they do something about it .

Decades of searching and I finally found the spf for my acne prone skin. This sunscreen is lightweight and doesn't make me break out. At first there's a separation in the liquid as others mention, but it goes away after a day or two, just shake it up lots at the beginning. 1,000% recommend!

Separated after about a month in spite of vigorous shaking. This company needs to reformulate and stabilize for better shelf life.

Previously I would have given this product a top rating. I loved it through 2 bottles. But I recently had to open a new bottle. What a difference. I shook it and shook it, tried storing it upside down overnight, then shook it some more. It is a watery mess with separation of the oil and so runny it wont stay on fingers to even apply it. So i decided to check the 2 unopened bottles I had. (I had forgotten I had an extra bottle and ordered 2 to make sure i didnt run out). They were both the same. Either they have put out some defective batches or they have ruined their product. Now i have 3 full bottles that are not useable.

I love this product-it truly looks like skin I find the best way to apply it is with your bare fingers. I'm around a Mac NC20 and it's a little dark for me but makes a great mix in too when combined with other spfs/foundations.

I was looking forward to using this product, however it was a huge disappointment. I shook it for quite a while to ensure it was well mixed but it dispensed like water. The pigment and oil/water were separated and nasty. It also smelled rancid. I was hoping to find a new sun screen with SPF 50, but I will stick with my other sunscreens.
Shanika from New York
Conserning the oil and pigment layers, yes it comes separated, no it doesnt affect performance, it honestly applies with the same concept of chanels tint you just mix it in on your face to absorb to have even coverage. As far as feel, it is oily at first but actually bearable on my normal skin in the summer and it settles down and doesnt stay feeling oily. Personally wont be repurchasing but a nice in between sunscreen.

This is the first tinted sunscreen that doesn't turn my skin purple. I have olive skin with a neutral undertone with a ton of redness and scarring. This melts into the skin. I shake mine before I use it and haven't had an issue with separation.

YES, this product upon first use MUST BE SHAKEN LONG AND HARD! And then at every use, shaken at a regular normal pace. Once its well shaken the product hits all the important points!! It does NOT cause patchy-ness around nose or hairline, it blends in beautifully, works well under makeup, doe NOT sting the eyes, no white cast, is spf 50, and works well on all skin tones. I love this!! It is expensive but I have yet to find ANYTHING better than this that hits these points!!

I had this for a few months and it has already separated. The expiration date isnt until another year so this is honestly ridiculous. I tried to contact the brand and they still have not responded back. The product also has a horrible scent that I cant get used to anyways so I will not be repurchasing especially after wasting money on this just for it to expire a year before the expiration date.

the packaging broke the first time i used it and I spilt half of it on the floor. it feels oily on the skin, its messy and after a few weeks the pigment is gone and destabilized and its just water now no matter how hard I shake it. Its not 1 star cuz it still works and doesnt break me out so yeah thats the only good thing about it so i'll still use it just so its not a complete waste of money. Good thing i bought it for half off.
Dhay from Los Angeles
I just returned it to Ulta due to product separated in 2 phases, one grease transparent and another thick and colored. I just found out another review here saying the same thing.

I used to love wearing this product every time I wear makeup because, as a woman of color, I loved that this product never left a white cast on my face. With that being said, over the last few months, I have noticed an alarming trend. Whenever I sweat profusely outside while wearing this sunscreen, my chin area always broke out with multiple pimples that took days to reduce down. Like, if I was exercising or hiking with my dog outside, this sunscreen's oils seem to blend with my sweat to aggravate my own oily-type face. Now, if I just wear this to simply shop or hang out in a city with my loved one, then this sunscreen doesn't clog pores. However, this sunscreen caused so many acne flare-ups for me post-workout that I decided that this will be my very last bottle so I can search for a new holy grail sunscreen. Sigh, and I really liked the messaging behind this brand too. Shame.

This would be a good formula if they hadn't put that extremely ACRID smelling chemical ingredient called INCI: methylpropanediol . . . unfortunately this ruins the whole product, in terms of being able to use it every day. The formula performs well, but I'm gonna throw up from the smell. Covering it with perfumes would not help. They need to find an alternative to that one chemical ingredient, that is KNOWN to cause that terrible odor. There are other products on the market that have the same problem, meaning they are great, but that one ingredient, commonly causes the acrid smell.

This is a great product. However, It could use some improvements at some point such as getting rid of the horrible smell It has. I love that it blends in easily and provides a luminous, juicy finish to the skin. I get super oily by the end of the day while using this sunscreen though but I normally just powder my t zone which I don't mind. With that being said, I think this would be an awesome product for dry and normal skin types but anyone can use it. It's mineral, high spf, and no white cast. Totally recommend it.

I loved this serum! Went to purchase my 3rd bottle and now it is a totally different product, only half as thick, separated and virtually impossible to mix. I was hoping to exhange it, but sadly all of the other bottles in the store were the same way. Looks like I'll need to find a new daily sunscreen (sigh).
