A topical gel treatment to combat breakouts. This 5% Benzoyl Peroxide concentrate, fortified with Alginated Zinc Triplex and soothing botanicals, helps accelerate blemish clearing. Contains no artificial fragrance or color. Professional recommendation advised.

How it works:

  • Benzoyl Peroxide eliminates bacteria in the skin follicles, helping to clear blemishes and prevent future breakouts.
  • Extracts of Calendula, Chamomile and St. Johns Wort help soothe irritation associated with acne.
  • Soothing Alginated Zinc Triplex helps control acne-causing bacteria and sebum production.

We recommend that first-time Dermalogica users visit an authorized skin treatment professional for a client consultation in an ULTA store.

Dermalogica Skin Treatments available at all ULTA locations. Click here for more information.

Cleanse the skin thoroughly before applying. Cover the affected area with a thin layer 1 to 3 times daily. Because too much drying of the skin may occur, start with one application daily and then gradually increase to 2 or 3 times daily if needed or as directed by a physician. If bothersome dryness occurs , reduce application to once daily or every other day. If going outside use a sunscreen. Allow Special Clearing Booster to dry then follow directions of the sunscreen labeling.

Pros

  • Contains active ingredients
  • Easy To Use
  • Penetrates
  • Works Effectively

Cons

  • Can cause skin flaking
  • Can dry out skin

Best Uses

  • bumps under surface of skin
  • Moderate Acne

Comments about Dermalogica Special Clearing Booster:

I trust Dermalogica. My only fear was that the Special Clearing Booster wouldn't do anything. Wrong. It is very powerful. I applied to area where I have under the skin acne bumps. I used every night for about 4 nights which turned out to be too much. The area got very flaky and actually peeled which was fine with me because I knew it was penetrating. I will continue to use -- but not every night. It's great product.

Comments about Dermalogica Special Clearing Booster:

The only real complaint I have with this product is the price. It is true that similar products cost under $10 & are just as effective. However, it's hard to find them at 5% benzoyl peroxide, (10% is the standard) and unless I want to fry my face or stress over making my own adjustments to the stronger formulas, I'll stick with this.

Comments about Dermalogica Special Clearing Booster:

Not sure if the formula has changed or not, but I've bought this product before and had no problems, but this time I had it for only a few days and it's burned my skin. I don't have very sensitive skin, I've only ever had this reaction to face products before, and that was during high school theatre when I had to strip my skin off every night for two weeks straight. It does dry out those pimples, though.

Comments about Dermalogica Special Clearing Booster:

I've had acne my entire adult life, and it sucks. Recently, I tried to go natural, which did not work for me, and my skin had its worst breakouts, ever. In the past, Benzoyl peroxide has helped, so I decided to try this formulation. I use it on my entire face, only at night, and it has really cleared me up over the last two months. Not perfectly, mind you, but it is so relieving to wake up most mornings without a painful, new spot to worry about. I'd say that I'm down to one bad pimple a week, as opposed to one bad pimple every day, as before. Because I do use it on my entire face, I get some dry areas, but keeping up with moisturizer and drinking enough water really helps. I feel Dermalogica's benzoyl peroxide works better than drugstore brands I've previously used.

      • Q:

How is this product different from the breakout control Gel! And is it better to use the booster in the am or pm? Also, some responses says to use it last so that it does not smear off, other responses says to use it under a moisturizer. Which is best?

This product uses benzoyl peroxide 5% to spot treat and dry up breakouts. It is best to apply this treatment last so it does not smear and and dry out your skin.

I currently am using the medibac products which are working great for my skin but it would be nice to have something that gets rid of the new breakouts faster. What's the difference between the special clearing booster and the breakout control? And which on would work better for the big painful pimples?

          A:

          Hello Rowdy:

Thank you for your interest in Dermalogica. Special Clearing Booster contains Benzoyl Peroxide as an active ingredient. It rapidly dries out breakout. It is more of a Spot Treatment. Breakout Control contains Lactobacillus Ferment as a main ingredient and is gentle in treating acne with out drying effects of Benzoyl Peroxide. Both products work effectively to treat acne. If you are more sensitive we recommend using Breakout Control.

      • Q:

I am currently using the precleanse, special cleansing gel, daily microfoliant, and a non dermalogica moisturizer called yes to cucumbers because I find that it is pretty soothing. I am 23 and have fair skin. I have mild acne on my cheeks, and by mild I mean just a few breakouts, but these breakouts are very large cystic like pimples as they won't fully come to the surface. I have had them for weeks and am desperate to get rid of them. I used clindamycin topical solution which is an antibiotic for 10 days and it only made my condition worse so I discontinued and have only been using the products I listed above. I guess my question is, will this work as a spot treatment for the type of acne I described (cystic pimples). I tried the medibac cleanser before and it irritated my sensitive/ redness prone skin, but I know I need some sort of antibacterial spot treatment. What regimen do you suggest? And do you suggest this product for my sensitive acne prone skin?

          Hello Jacque:

Thank you for your interest in Dermalogica. If your skin is prone to being sensitized and redness, we recommend that you use Breakout Control. It works effectively by preventing and treating existing acne with out over drying or irritating the skin.

      • Q:

What's the difference between this and the breakout control? I've been getting large, under the skin cystic like pimples either caused from stress & weather changes, using the plan b contraceptive pill (about 1 month ago) or a new foundation. I can't quite pin point what the cause is yet but every couple days I have another large pimple pop up. They're only around hormonal areas of my face (cheeks down to chin & jawline). I use Differin gel in the evenings and have tried the Mario Drying Lotion, but I don't think that spot treatment is strong enough. Which would be a good one to use during the day time? I am fair and have combination skin and dealt with cystic acne in my early 20's, I'm now 27 and typically only get a couple pimples during that time of the month. Now I have large ones coming back and need something to help calm my skin down. Suggestions appreciated!

          A:

Thank you for your inquiry. If you are using Differin gel we do not recommend using over the counter acne treatments unless recommended by your doctor. You will benefit from our Ultra Calming Cleanser, Ultra Calming Mist and Active Moist to keep skin hydrated. Also, be sure to where sunscreen everyday, Oil Free Matte SPF30 is recommended for acne prone skin.
