Most Helpful Positive Review THE ONLY SILICONE FREE MATTE DAILY ZINC SUNSCREEN
This is literally the ONLY zinc sunscreen with NO SILICONE or weird chemical sunscreens added, no pore clogging ingredients really, is matte NOT OILY AND AWFUL, so makes a great base for makeup in my opinion, it does have a light to invisible white cast depending how much you put on and how long you rub it in and if you shake it well before use. I have dark skin, and to counteract a very very very faint cast, I just fluff on a tiny amount of a darker foundation (white means I put less foundation on) if I'm doing a very light makeup day, or i just put my regular makeup on over it if I'm having a long day and it looks totally the same as it would without the sunscreen. On the days I use it, my skin doesn't feel any drier or anything, I love the matte smooth finish it's almost like a primer but GOOD for your skin! I love the protection and I love that it's easy to wash off better than ones with bull**** silicone in them. I HATE how almost all products have pore clogging ingredients, I'm acne prone and everything breaks me out and chemical sunscreens are ALL TOTALLY OILY I cannot use them under makeup. This works GREAT for a FULL FACE makeup and light makeup days. I have already bought another for my mom and having my sister try it. The australian gold one has a tiny bit of silicone in it and it made my mom break out but I like that one too for long wearing sunny days and full face and it has a higher SPF but this one is my favorite.
Most Helpful Critical Review Nope!
I already use Mad Hippie, so I was excited to see they have a physical, affordable sunscreen. I bought it, I thought I loved it, and then... Let's start with whitecast. It says to use the antioxidant oil with this to reduce the whitecast. So, I did. The oil broke my forehead out like crazy and the only sporadically-tamed oiliness came back with a vengeance, so I stopped adding the oil. I started to use various other products to mix with the sunscreen to reduce the cast. Sometimes my MD Vitamin C serum but mainly I used my oil free gel cream moisturizer. They helped but ultimately there was always a bit of a cast.
Here is the big issue though. I started to notice my skin was looking dull and felt rough. I noticed lots of blackheads. Something told me to not use the sunscreen for a few days and see what happens. After discontinuing use and removing those blackheads, my skin returned to normal in less than a week. No more dullness and blackheads haven't returned. So I returned the product. Shame.

I was so excited to try this bc I'm always looking for a natural facial sunscreen for my sensitive skin. This is NOT it! It left a white cast and did not blend in well. Left my face feeling dry and flaky the more I rubbed it in…so bad that I had to add some moisturizer on top!
Libbey from Ohio
This SPF didn't work for me. It leaves a white cast and is super drying. It also was really patchy when I tried to rub it in.
Aria_ivy from Fairfax, VA
I think I've finally found the one! After countless mineral options, this one feels right for me. It goes on so smooth and feels comfortable with minimal white cast, has a pleasant scent and doesn't dry my skin out as most zinc based products do. Love the clean formula and that it doesn't turn too sticky as the day wears on, again as most zinc based formulas do. So unless something changes, imho this is a five star physical spf formulation, esp. if your skin is normal to dry. Really glad I bought this, am ordering a backup.
New favorite sunscreen

This has a very light scent, not bad. I don't like scent on my face, but this is not strong & fades quickly. This is not too thick that it can't be shaken in the tube. Does not separate, goes on smoothly, no pulling on my skin to rub in. Soaks in quickly, white fades. I use this after Mad Hippie vitamin C serum.

leaves a terrible white cast and when you try to rub it in more it makes white flakes
the best daily spf

i absolutely love this stuff. it goes on so easily, doesn't leave me feeling greasy, and blends into my skin perfectly. i'm so glad that Ulta carries eco conscious brands like Mad Hippie
Great SPF, Packaging Needs Improvement

Love this mineral SPF. Would prefer if this came in a pump bottle instead of a squeeze tube.
It works really good but it is liquidy
Abril from El Paso, TX
I love this sunblock for the ingredients, it's so hard to find one that doesn't have so many chemicals. That said, I had two issues with this sunblock. The first time i tried this it was so nice and creamy and very easy to blend. Once it settled though it became more of a liquid even if you shook it real well. It separates so you do have to shake it each time you use it, but even then it's still more like a liquid than a cream after shaking.
Second issue is that if you don't have moisturizer on your face it does leave a white cast. I've found that if I do a good layer of moisturizer first and let my skin absorb it a little before applying this sunblock it won't have the white cast.
Otherwise this is a really great product. It doesn't clog my pores or cause me to breakout like other sunblocks. I'd recommend it and will keep on using it
Smells Great, Protects, But that Residue Tho...
Mermaid from Sacramento
Wanted to love this. It smells great but: it leaves a heavy white residue, bottle opens easily (faulty packaging) and it spilled oil (product separated in container) in my purse, and it's super sticky.
Ri2 from Pueblo
Didn't like at all. Left residue and white flakes.. Never using again.
Luna from NYC
Love the product overall as a natural SPF. It is slightly hard to blend. My skin tone is medium, and it blends better if I put it on right after my moisturizer. You have to shake the bottle. One thing I wish would change about the product is how the cap doesn't have a pointy tip inside to stop the sunscreen from leaking out into the cap. Then it settles around there and dries up.
Love this sunscreen

I love this sunscreen gives a nice matte finish. I use the mad hippie line. Since i am fair the white cast doesnt bother me. Lets me know i have my sunscreen on it does absorb in.
Not bad but white cast
CM from Chicago
I actually like this SPF, as it is all natural and didn't irritate my sensitive, acne-prone skin. Unfortunately, it leaves a white cast on my light to medium brown skin, even after rubbing. Not bad under makeup but as an SPF and go, I look like Casper
Clean, light, long-lasting
303Mama from Colorado
Finally found "the one" for my face! I will never use chemical sunscreens, and hate having to look up ingredients that are 25 letters long and unrecognizable. This an ingredient list I can feel good about.
Any mineral sunscreen is going to have some "white cast" to it, but it's very slight with this product. From reading some of the other reviews, I thought this would look full-on Kabuki! It's nothing compared to most mineral formulas. If you want it to work and to last, it has to have enough zinc to do the job. Put some makeup over it if you don't like the tone.
The texture is light and perfect and it lasted for hours on a sweaty hike. My skin is combination and it can get oily with some sunscreens. Not this one. I'm a convert!
It's Not for Me
LeslieB from New York
Unfortunately, I don't care for this product. Although it goes on very nicely, it is quite drying. Keep in mind that I have oily skin, so I really never mind a bit of drying... lol! But, this is way too much. If I kept using it, I would have to put a moisturizer under it. The main reason why I don't like it is due to the smell. It's not that it's bad, it's just not the type of smell I like. It seems to be some sort of heavy rosy flowery scent, which is way too overpowering and does not go away after putting it on. But, if you don't mind the drying and scent, it is a good product.
Not for tan/dark skin
JM from Michigan
I really wanted to like this and hoped for the best. Ingredients are clean. No silicones. No coconut oil. Perfect.
However, the white cast is a deal breaker. It was there even after rubbing it in. And the longer I rubbed it in...it started pilling with dry skin.
This would be a good beach facial sunscreen. And best to be worn under make up. I don't wear much make up, so will be returning.
Bonus — it felt great on the skin as far as texture. Not too dry, not too matte. PLEASE MAKE A TINTED VERSION.

Super white cast and very dry.

This is the best sunscreen ever. A little goes a long way and it doesn't feel heavy on my face or leave a white film. I put it on after my moisturizer and go. Plus the ingredients are the best I've seen in all of the options Ulta has
I would purchase again
SuSu from Rossville, Tn 38066
I cleanse my face, apply moisturizer & use this mixed with facial oil. A very small amount goes a long way. After the sunscreen sets on my face for about 15 minutes, then I apply makeup. Works wonderfully if used as recommended.
Doesn't wear well under makeup
TM from Colorado Springs, CO
This SPF did not wear well under my makeup. It caked my makeup and made the makeup around my eyes glob in my creases. For my no-makeup days, I will definitely put this on, but no way will I wear this under makeup again. I like the smell, it's light. I like that the ingredients are not harmful.

This product has a terrible white cast. Also, would not recommend if you have dry skin. It becomes very patchy on dry skin after application.
Best sunscreen moisturizer I have yet to purchase
Jaymad from Central Oregon
It doesn't feel too heavy on the face, it layers well under makeup, has a very slight fragrance that is not like the typical strong sunscreen smell, it did not sting my face in areas where I have dry spots
brentries from NC, USA
AMAZING product! I love that it is 100% reef safe and cruelty free, and normally I only use 100% vegan products, but the only non vegan ingredient is beeswax which I am not too picky about (not everyone thinks that way and that's okay). When I was reading reviews I was worried about the "white cast," but honestly I just think people do not know how to apply it. Non-nano zinc is going to be a little white, but if you warm it up in your hands and let it sit on your face for a second before rubbing it in, I do not see a difference. Sits well under makeup, and doesn't feel greasy at all. Top it all off with a wonderful natural citrus scent, I am extremely content with this product. Recommend to everyone!!
Severe white cast
Curly Summer from Elizabethton TN
I have only been using this product for about two weeks. However, so far, I'm not terribly impressed. As far as the pros: it isn't a chemical sunscreen (which all burn my eyes), I have not had any burning/tanning on my skin, and my sunspots have not become more noticeable. It does seem to work as a sunscreen. The cons: WHITECAST. I am very fair (think "lightest foundations are sometimes too dark") and it leaves a ridiculous whitecast even on me. If you use the suggested amount of sunscreen for face and neck, it takes forever to rub/sink in, looks chalky afterwards, and will still move/streak after 15-20 minutes. If I get any in my hair (my brows or edges) it's a huge mess. I have to spoolie through those hairs to get it off the area, otherwise I look like I have splotches of white hair. I have also noticed some dry skin/peeling around my mouth and some texture that wasn't there before. I'm not sure if it is this product, but it is the only change I've made. This is the only Mad Hippie product that I've been disappointed in. I will be purchasing a replacement product and moving this to the "emergency, I ran out of my normal product" shelf.

I followed the advice to mix with with a few drops of the antioxidant oil and have no white cast, it blends in nicely. I let it soak in for a bit before applying makeup. I had been having terrible breakouts and think I narrowed it down to my chemical sunblock......so far so good with this much cleaner option.
