Most Helpful Positive Review After using this shampoo over a month, I can 100% recommend Okay, I wanted to use this shampoo awhile before writing a review because often times, things are great in the beginning then I notice extra dryness or my hair doing weird stuff. I can honestly say it is a great shampoo and saw none of this after more than a month of use. The first time I used it, I had box braids. It cleaned my scalp better than any shampoo I had used previously. I use a lot of heavy oils for my scalp when I have box braids and I often get build up around the roots towards the end. Usually, nothing helps, but this shampoo did the trick!
After I took my braids out, I would wash my hair once a week. I section my hair into 4 twist and focused the shampoo on my scalp. Of course it gets in the rest of my hair, but I keep it in twist while I wash. Then I condition for several hours or overnight with a shea moisture hair mask. My hair retains water better now. I also noticed the conditioner seems to penetrate my hair more and I don't have to use as much. After I rinse out the conditioner, I use the Melanin leave in and twist cream throughout the week. My hair feels great honestly!
Most Helpful Critical Review Not buying again Initially I loved this shampoo. It lathers well and the scent of the African Black Soap is very pleasing. After weeks of use, I noticed my hair getting drier, duller and more tangled. My curls were not bouncy anymore but rather very stretch out. It was like a constant build up on my hair like soap scum that builds up in the bathroom if you don't use strong cleaner (like Chlorox, Oxyclean, etc...). Then it occurred to me that I need to clarify. I use another well known brand that has a product specifically for build up (you ladies know what I'm talking about) and my curls came bouncing right back.
Now, I love Melanin Haircare's leave-in condition and the Twist-Elongating Style Cream and will continue to use both as my staple. But the Shampoo is no good in the long run. Sorry Whit, I love you and hang on your every word regarding hair but this shampoo is a miss.

This product made my hair soooo soft, and it felt super clean. My hair looks healthy, and it smells good, too!
I would definitely say this is a new staple! 5

The Best Cleanse 5
Kris from NY
This shampoo is amazing! I've been using it for a month and I love how clean my scalp feels after, but my curls aren't stripped. It has a gentle, clean, earthy smell with a hint of mint. I love it with my go to conditioner.
Love it! 5

This shampoo is definitely going on my must have list. It cleans my hair without leaving it stripped.
Extremely Drying 3
Ms. Angela from Detroit
I purchased the shampoo directly from Melanin Hair Care's app. The app does not allow reviews. I like how she packages the Melanin Hair Care line with easy to use bottle applicators. Nice sizes and less expensive than other brands tried. I wanted very much to like this shampoo because I subscribe to her channel. I have 4C low porosity extremely thick hair. The shampoo cleans my scalp, it also leaves it itchy, stripped and extremely dry. I feel like I have to over do it with using conditioner and moisturizer to get my softness back and detangle. Will not purchase again. I will use my empty bottles to create my own DIY regimen.
African Soap that Doesn't Strip 5
Tonya from Sandusky, OH
I was in the market for a shampoo that was made for my hair: African American. I wear braids or weaves, so I need an applicator to get in between the braids. I am skeptic of African soap because for ME it doesn't work for skincare for me. But I am willing to try and happy with the results.
Reliable and Long Lasting 5
Angelica from New York
The small nozzle lets you save shampoo. You don't need a lot. No more than a palm sized amount for entire head and lather it in your hands first before rubbing in. Great clarifier for oily scalps. Very refreshing and strips away any gunk. Smells clean and leaves hair not too stripped. This is my new ol' reliable. I have 3B/3C hair btw
Good cleanse without stripping 5
Iris from Michigan
Cleanses my 4c/4b hair without stripping it (I do prepoo with coconut oil first). Scalp feels great afterwards. Nice smell. Good lather.
Hair Loss Minimized 5

I like this shampoo as it has limited my hair loss and shedding. It doesn't overly dry out my hair and scalp. This shampoo is a game changer. Get It!!!
Didn't Help Dry Scalp 1
Riley F from West Lafayette, IN
I bought these because I was hoping and praying it would be moisturizing enough for my dry scalp issues. I've been dealing with small white flakes building in my hair and I feel like I've siphoned hundreds of dollars into trying to find a shampoo/conditioner that helps my dry scalp. This was just another combo to add to my list of things that just didn't work for me. The shampoo made my hair "squeaky" after rinsing, and the conditioner didn't pack nearly enough punch to replenish the moisture that the shampoo stripped from my hair. My flakes have only gotten substantially worse since using. They also both smell insanely minty, which is not something I'm fond of. Will be returning both bottles and moving onto something else.
Great cleansing shampoo 5
Iris from Michigan
Love the scent. Hair was clean but not stripped. I did pre poo before using it. Followed up with a moisturizing shampoo and my hair felt great. This will be a weekly staple for me.
stay away!!! 3
Candyland from New Jersey
I used this shampoo for a month and it completely damaged my hair. My hair is normally super easy to detangle and is silky. It matted up my hair terribly and I lost almost half of my hair from it. Not even their conditioner helped. Never using again. Do not pick up this product!
love this shampoo!!! 5

I love this product 5
Bry from MI
I have been using this product for about a week but I immediately notice results the first time I use this product. This product helped with my dry flaky scalp. It leaves my scalp in healthy clean state. It smells minty probably because of the tea tree 🌲 but it's a great 😊 product!
LOVEEEE 5
Shannie from Chicago
I LOVEEEE! Have been using it for two months and my hair has grown drastically! I did a big chop in January and started using this shampoo in July and have noticed that my hair didn't start growing until I started using this shampoo!!! The tip is so convenient & spreads evenly on the scalp!!! And a little goes a longggg way.
It's a clarifying shampoo, not moisturizing! 5
Junebug from Boston, MA
I've been using this shampoo for a while now, and it cleans! When I notice a lot of buildup on my scalp, this is the shampoo I reach for. To get the best results, follow this up with a really moisturizing deep conditioner and you'll have not only a clean scalp, but very moisturized hair.
Enjoyed this as a clarifying shampoo 5
curlicious from BC, Canada
Love how Melanin shampoo comes in application bottle with good amount of volume and a nozzle applicator, it's thick to squeeze out. Lathers up nicely to remove build up and smells minty:) Hair feels squeaky clean but not stripped or matted.
Bad Smell 1
Shannon from Houston, Texas
This product including the conditioners made my hair smell bad. It is embarrassing.
Gods clean feeling 5
Neff815 from NYC
I used this product right after my two month protective style take down and with just one shampoo application my hair was CLEAN. Clean to the point of squeaking! I love that. I use this in conjunction with the Melanin oil and conditioner for my L.O.C. method and I'm good!
Yes I would purchase again 5

I noticed you have to give this shampoo a chance. 5
Tyler156 from Maryland
You gotta give this shampoo a chance. Your hair will feel dry af but keep on using it. This stuff has changed my curl pattern. My roots are super soft, like newborn hair. I use it alone without condition once or twice a week instead of co-washing with conditioner. It very clarifying, it helps get rid of product build up. Only down side is that it not a pleasant smelling shampoo. And if you leave the bottle in the shower it will make the smell worse.
Love it!! 5

Really good clarifying shampoo! Have a really good moisturizing conditioner ready after this. It definitely strips my hair of product buildup so well. I always use a good moisturizing conditioner after.

I've only used it twice and it makes me hair feel terrible dry and frizzy. Returning
Love It!! 5
Sandra from Virginia
Since I went back to using hair grease I needed a clarifying shampoo and decided to try this one first and I felled in love with it. It is a great shampoo with quality ingredients. It doesn't strip my hair too much since I do a pre-poo/detangle prior to washing. This is going to be a staple in my haircare regimen.

The product of course works for Whitney, but I live in the southeast where the water is hard and the air is humid. I said all that to say that it dries my hair out and tangles it while washing. Will not buy again.
