Most Helpful Positive Review Great Product Line
Before finding this product, I spent ten years searching for ways to control my unruly curls. Other gels are too thick and make hair look wet and feel crunchy. The price is a bit high, but I don't use nearly as much at a time as I would of other products. It's worth every penny. I must admit that my opinion might not be as high if I had not first read the DevaCurl founder's book "Curly Girl: the Handbook". It really taught me how to care for my hair and get the most out of these products. I used to straighten my hair every day because I didn't know how to handle the curls and frizz. But since reading the book and using DevaCurl, I can honestly say that I actually enjoy and prefer my curls over straight hair. My hair has been saved! Embrace your curls!
Most Helpful Critical Review Great smell, but nothing special
I have very fine wavy/curly hair. And no matter how I try them, I can not get either of the DevaCurl gels to work for me. Arc Angell gave better (well tighter) curl formation than Angell, but my curls always came out stringy. With Angell, my curls were a bit more chunked together but my they were incredibly droopy. I know naysayers will think I didn't use as directed or do it right, but I did...over and over. These gels are just too heavy for my uber fine hair.

Thought my hair getting noticeably thinner and scarce around my face was due to aging (although I'm 26) but after some research, I realized that it was this hair product that was doing the damage. This product is "light" which makes it seem better for thin hair, so I though I was going myself a favor. After discontinuing using this product, my hair is back to normal.

Please do Not Purchase these products. Do some research, Curlsmith is a better, healthier option. These items cause hair loss & scalp damage.
Want to shave your head??
DevaDamaged from NC
This product along with the rest of their line is TOXIC. Even almost a year after using any of their products, my hair is still nowhere near what it was before. I have lost so much hair and my curl pattern is completely ruined now. I cannot do anything with my hair at this point. It is damaged far worse than it ever was using heat and color for years and years. I have put my hair through a lot in the past and finally cut it all off and decided to get it healthy. I was five years strong of doing the best for my hair and no heat or color when I started using Deva's line. Now all of that effort is down the drain and my hair is fried. And the only way to fix it is to shave it all off and hope it will grow back better. So unless you want to go down that road as well, stay FAR FAR away from any of their products. There are thousands of people that have been victims of these products and lawsuits in the works. Trust me, there are plenty of better stylers out there, many at much cheaper prices. I would hate to see even one more person deal with this. They need to recall their products until they figure out whatever changed when them around 2018.

First off I have been a ulta member since 2015, I spend thousands of dollars each year on hair and skin products and I'm always emailed to give a review but I never have. Today I decided to write a review on this product. I was so excited to get this gel, I heard so much about deva curl and I just had to try it. Of course I bought the travel size items first just to test out and omg I loved them so I went back a week later and bought all full size bottles. That was my BIGGEST mistake. After about a month of using deva curl I noticed a change in my hair. Not a good one. To sum it up I used this gel about every other day after washes for a month straight. At first I started to notice more hair falling out in the shower than usual(like clumps of hair) then my scalp started to get more dry, itchy and almost hurt to touch like it was burning. Then come week 3 I started to realize how thin my hair was getting( I have very wavy, thick Puerto Rican, long hair down to my butt). It's taken me about 6 years to get my hair so healthy and beautiful and in just one month this product destroyed that! My hair is now stringy, dry, brittle, thinning at the scalp and I've lost length. I love my hair and I do everything but the best for it and this product is by far the worst thing I've ever come in contact with! Ladies if you love your hair as much as I do save yourself! DO NOT BUY!
Devacurl causes hair loss and hair damage!
Erica B from Huntsville, AL
I started using devacurl products in early 2019. I started with the original hair gel but in late 2019 I switched to the light defining gel. MWithin a month or so of using devacurl I started noticing significant hair loss. I'm talking a palm sized amount of hair in every single shower. I also noticed my hair just started looking more damaged and less curly, more frizzy. It just looked bad. Eventually I had to have it cut from bra strap length to shoulder length because my hair got so thin it was stringy and gross looking long. I had my hair cut at a Deva certified salon and they also used devacurl products on my hair. I told them about the hair loss but I thought it was hormonal. At this point I never once question that it might be devacurl, because devacurl is supposed to be the best of the best. So I kept using their products. In december 2019 I bought a replacement bottle of two products, the low poo and the light defining gel. At this point I noticed my scalp was just really itchy and it burned. After a couple weeks I noticed I was getting lots of dandruff that didn't go away with clarifying with sulfate free shampoo, and red tiny bumps on my scalp started to pop up. Then about a week ago a girl I follow on YouTube told about her experience and how devacurl products ruined her hair. She was exclusively using devacurl too and her hair looked just like mine. I realized at this point that obviously it was these products! I stopped using them immediately and washed them all out of my hair. Since removing the devacurl products my scalp feels better and looks better, but my hair is so thin you can see my scalp. Specifically mostly in the area of my hairline and around my ear/temple area. It will take probably years to repair the damage these products have done to my hair. Do yourself a favor and don't buy them and if you own them, stop using them immediately. If you haven't experienced hair loss you dodged a bullet, I wouldn't personally want to risk this happening!

a lot of curly hair products that i've tried make my hair feel very chunky and weighed down, but this didnt!! it's very light and doesn't make my hair feel heavy at all

This product flaked in my hair on day one. Returned it a few days later. Wouldn't recommend.
Finally Found The Perfect Product
Pazzaragazza from Boston
I have a lot of hair, but it's on the finer side. It's wavy & puffs out badly after it air dries. Frizzy in general. It's colored & highlighted. When my hair is almost dry, it looks good. Nice long wavy layers & no frizz. Completely dried, the wave is just about gone & turns to frizz. This product gives me that look I like when it's halfway air dried. My waves are redefined. No frizz! I love the way it looks after I tousle it. Beachy waves. I'm impressed! Also hooked.
I gave it 4 stars because it has a spray pump. It's not supposed to from what I see here. Plus, it shot out in a straight stream that went everywhere except my hair at first. I think I can survive this or try to find a cap that fits from something else. Still, very happy with the results :)
It's okay, not amazing
GABBY from Florida
This is an okay gel, not amazing in my opinion. I have 3B curls, and I noticed that the first day, my hair was pretty nice. Not really frizzy or anything, but it was a little flat for my liking. By the second day, my hair was really oily and really flat. I would add water in my hair to reactivate the gel that was already in my hair to tame down any sort of frizz. The frizz was tamed, but I also didn't want to turn to dry shampoo for the oil when that is something I typically didn't do until maybe the 3rd day. I tried using a smaller amount, but it didn't make to much of a difference. So, 3 stars because my hair wasn't really crunchy, but made my hair oily and limp by day two.
Trish from Kansas
I don't feel crunchy with this product. I use the light control which just curbs enough of the frizz to make a big difference. Really love the product.
Great for curly girls

Helps my curls stay put and freeze free. I like how it doesn't make my hair crunchy like most gels do.
I buy this product and other Deva products again and again!

Anyone with curly hair that doesn't want frizzy hair will love Deva products.
Mariah Christine from St. Paul
I usually hate gels because i dont want stuff ramen looking curls but i apply this at the end of my product routine with WET hair and smooth it over before scrunching. Once dry, i scrunch again & my hair isn't stiff at all & frizz free! You have to smooth it over wet hair otherwise it won't be as great
(I have 2c/3b thick curls)
Ultra hold for mixed curl patterns
Crissy from New York, NY
I've used ultra hold before and I feel that that's worked better for me because it controls my most curly hair patterns. Unfortunately this gel only took care of my wavy patterns. I recommend this for those with no mixed curl patterns.
Not for me..

My hair was dry, frizzy and stiff. I love my hair to looks moisturized and bouncy and this product did the opposite.

Love this gel!
Cristina from MODESTO
This was horrible , it made my hair super rough feeling and dull. It also made my hair feel damaged after washing I have 2-3b curls that are usually bouncy and moisturized . Not sure if why this product was so raved about
Love this product!
Bonkers from Grand Rapids, MI
I love this product. I have been using this gel for over a year now. It helps to keep my curls/waves in place. It holds them pretty well too. It gets crunchy as your hair dries, but you can break the cast and it keeps the curl. This is my favorite go-to product after washing my hair. I pair this with the wave maker on my second day.
Elyana from Hairland
Smells amazing, goes on damp hair smoothly, looks fabulous initially, but my mixed-patterned, fine waves and curls turned to full blown frizz/ puff-ball hair within just a few hours. Will not repurchase! Expensive for such a lackluster product.
