I have grown-out blonde highlights and about three inches of light brown roots (my natural color is kind of taupe). I haven't noticed much lightening of my roots (it's only been a week) but my highlights look less brassy and more bright. I don't personally think the scent is a dealbreaker; it's not a great smell, but it's really not bad either to me. Also it smells better in your hair than it does when you smell it in the bottle. I have pretty oily hair and I struggle to find products that clean my roots without drying my ends and highlights (I switched to this after using Living Proof for the last year). This shampoo + the conditioner achieve that really well. My roots don't get oily until day 3/4!!! Side note: if you have naturally dry hair this shampoo might be too harsh for you. And my hair feels soft and easy to brush out when it's 50% dry. I have also noticed added volume. I don't mind that the shampoo doesn't lather, that is to be expected with any sulfate-free shampoo (sulfates are what is in soap, and what makes the soap/shampoo bubble and lather). Sulfate-free is better for the environment and for my sensitive scalp, so I am totally willing to sacrifice lather for the planet!
