Most Helpful Positive Review Great Sun protection
My boyfriend and I went on vacation to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic in March. We took this sunscreen with us to the beach. Great product! No sunburns and not sticky which is great for the beach so the sand doesn't stick to you. Plus didn't make my face break out! Would recommend this to anyone!

If I could give this product zero stars, I would. My husband used the product on our first day in Hawaii. He is very fair and applies sunscreen liberally and reapplies. We were outside for over 3 hours, and he reapplied once each hour. That night, his entire chest and arms were splotchy sunburned. We assumed it was something in the way he applied, although being 51 and fair-skinned, he's not new to sunscreen.
The next day, both my husband and daughter used the 70 SPF. My daughter is fair also, and knowing we would be on the beach instead of the pool, we chose the 70 for both. Again, we applied liberally as directed and reapplied. She is burned splotchy, and is very uncomfortable ruining her night, and next few days. I have photos of both, along with the lot #. My husband, from day 2, is as red as I've ever seen him in over 20 years, and has blisters. This after reapplying once per hour??
I purchased this product based on review from consumer reports. Epic fail. It is clear that the product offered NO protection. We have lost at least two days of enjoying Hawaii and a refund doesn't really seem like sufficient compensation. We will never purchase again.
The comments on this page have been similar, and yet Neutrogena replied that this is not typical. I beg to differ. We will supply photos of the burns. I do not, under any circumstances, recommend this product.

Something is very wrong with this product. My daughter and fiancé used it all over their body according to instructions and are fully burned where this product was applied. For me I applied a tanning lotion to my body and that isn't burned. I applied this to my face and it is very burned.
We were out for 5 hours. We applied 5 times as well as took breaks in the shade.
I have used this product before and never had such horrible results. Like I said, I used a different product on my body and it wasn't burned, but jsed this on my face and it was burned. So the product is obviously the issue. I have the lot number. And, I purchased this yesterday when we left so it isn't like it sat opened for months in my cabinet.
Unless I get an explanation as to what is wrong with this, I will go full "Karen" and will blow up every avenue I can with how horrible my experience was with this. Neutrogena needs to investigate this and fix it before more people do not get the sun protection they need.
Still got burnt :(

I reapplied this stuff constantly yesterday (Every 30 min?) to the point that I used almost the whole can. I was out in the sun for about 4 hours. I still got really sunburnt. I got maybe more sunburnt than I did using nothing before. It's not worth it, try something else!!!

I had lots of streaky sunburns using this spray. The actual spray nozzle doesn't have a wide coverage, and I felt like I had to go over myself 2-3 times to be fully covered. I also wasn't a fan of the smell. I bought pharmacy brand generic when this was over, and honestly like it much better.

I wear sunscreen daily generally I apply cream to my entire body every day. Went to beach today. Applied cream sunscreen before going. I applied neutrogena beach defense spray to my legs only. Severe sunburn only to areas sprayed with neutrogenia. Used Walgreens brand sunscreen cream on arms and no burn.
My skin is very sensitive

I tried every sing brand but it doesn't work good on my face specially when I go to the beach . I see suburb marks all over my face but this time I use neutropena beach defense spf 100. I love it . No sunburn marks on my face and I get to spend all day in water thanks to my Neutrogena spf 100. It's worth it and love my tan :)

I bought this last week and used it today when we went to the swimming pool. We applied it before we got in the water and again every hour. We were there 3 hours. After a few hours we noticed we all were very burnt! This product is awful! It doesn't help protect against sunburn!!!!

Gave two of my children blisters
AimeeB from New Orleans, LA
My mother in law bought us the beach defense SPF 70 spray for our beach trip last weekend, and i think it was defective. We go to the beach often and are used to the sun. We applied it regularly throughout the day on Saturday. By the end of the day the whole family was sunburnt, the 5 of us. The next morning two of my children had blisters in spots that the sunscreen was applied, the worst was on my daughters face where we sprayed the most product. Her cheeks and nose were severly burnt and had two blisters on it. The places with the most sunscreen had the worst sunburns. Will definately be switching back to baby sunscreen for everyone. I threw the can away to avoid anymore sun damage to my family.
Do not buy

Bought this for my kids to use. We normally get the Neutrogena wet spray or the sport, but purchased this beach defense spray. My children never burn from the other products. They both have sunburn after using this. I do not recommend.
Doesn't protect from burn
JEC511 from Dyer, Indiana
Bought this for my kids to use. We normally get the Neutrogena wet spray or the sport, but purchased this beach defense cream and the beach defense spray. My children never burn from the other products. They both have sunburn from 70 minutes of playing outside. I also have sunburn on my face. Something is wrong with this formula. Do not recommend.

I bought this spray for my fair-skinned husband who is in and out of the pool a lot. He does not burn with this spray, but does tan. Product stays on and does not wash away.

I bought this sunscreen for my recent trip to the beach. I sprayed on liberally and rubbed it in. I also reapplied every 80 minutes the whole time I was on the beach. I was severely burned on my
legs, arms, and shoulders to the point of sun poisoning but not all over. My arms and legs were covered in severally burned splotches. Since I rubbed it in and sprayed repeatedly over the areas I know this was not due to application but some kind of defect in the sunscreen. Will not ever use again.

I borrowed the beach defense spf 100 from my little brother after he bragged about how good it was for fishing all day in the southeast texas sun and not getting burned I sprayed it on once at 8:00 am and worked until 5:00 PM in the sun and didn't even get red at all i normally use coppertone sport SPF 70 i don't burn with it but i still get red and it's gone by morning but with the neutrogena I didn't even get red it's the best sunblock I have found in at least 30 years I will continue to buy as long as you sell it

This is awful! I wish I could give it at least a zero if not negative stars. I bought this beach defense knowing that I am pale, as is my daughter, and we go to a lake with sand a lot during the summer. Saturday I used this on 5 of us, 3 ended up with a sunburn. Yesterday 4 of us ended up with sunburn. We applied about every hour, waited the appropriate amount of time before getting back in the water, the sunscreen was not expired. I thought possibly we hadn't done a great job applying the first time, but yesterday we did super well. I am so disappointed and will never buy these products again. It's really sad to see others had had similar problems with no real help from the company.
Love This Sunscreen

I am very fair and have been getting burnt and blistered my whole life. I started using this last summer and was so happy not to be burnt all the time. I spray it everywhere and it works awesome. I would never go bad to the other brands I used to use.
Like using nothing

Bought the "sun screen" and used it on a camping trip. I used as directed and still received a bad sun burn, my six year old got it worse with really bad blisters. I would warn others to not waste money on this product.

Bought this for a camping trip, we applied it early and liberally and reapplied after two hours. Every member of our family was left with peeling, blistered sunburns.

Generous amount every time you spray, and it's not super greasy, sinks right in and you don't have to get your hands all messy

The smell is not too bad but it really gets into your nose. And it also left my skin pretty sticky after use.
Really wanted to love this sunscreen, but I don't!
FLbeachbum1833 from Longboat Key, FL
I bought this sunscreen when I ran out of my other spray sunscreen. I've always loved Neutrogena products so why wouldn't I love their sunscreen?! I am fair skinned with red hair so I burn easily.
I applied my usual spf 70 lotion (not Beach Defence) in the morning before hitting the beach. I reapplied Beach Defence Spray 70 spf 3 times during the day, on my chest shoulders and upper arms. By the time we left the beach I was pink and feeling very warm. When I got home I was on fire! The only area I burnt was where this sunscreen was applied! How does that happen?! I'm perplexed as to how my lotion sunscreen i applied at 7 am lasted longer and protected me better than the spray I reapplied 3 times at the beach.
My hypothesis is that there is something in the spray that my body reacts to making me more susceptible to the suns UV rays.
I have friends who swear by this sunscreen and don't experience this issue. Sadly I will not be purchasing any more beach defense products. I hope no others have to experience this awful sunburn while using sunscreen.
