Most Helpful Positive Review Amazing tan for the price!
This review is in regards to the extra dark self tan mousse. Some people seem to be talking about all different tanologist products so Ulta must be aggregating reviews.
Was initially worried that it was going to be too dark but it definitely is not. The color looks the same as if I laid by the Wynn pool all day without the redness :)
I have also tried the dark self tanning mousse and I agree, it does come out a bit orange. The extra dark is more of a brown.
I found the directions to be a bit confusing between what's on the bottle and what's online so here is what I did to prep..
1. Exfoliate 24 hours before. I shaved as well but you don't have to.
1.Shower like normal and let your skin dry fully.
2. Moisturize your knee caps, elbows, hands and feet - the areas that would hold color in the creases basically. Let it dry.
3. Using a tanning mitt, apply in circular motions. The nice thing about the extra dark is the moose is actually brown so you can see where you are applying.
I go over the area with the tanning mitt after applying without adding additional product just to make sure I rubbed the product on really good and evenly. Let it dry.
Wash hands afterwards.
I also try to avoid using water for a little while after application (aside from washing your hands once right after) because if you splotch water on your skin, you'll see that product come off and leave a water spot. If that has happened to you before you'll know exactly what I mean.
I generally avoid putting on my hands and feet because it's so hard for the product to come out evenly but if you do, make sure to exfoliate the area really good and spend the time to ensure it is rubbed in evenly.
I find it's too hard and not worth the effort to get product in really good and it almost always looks fake or bad on your hands and feet so I just avoid and don't find it to be noticeable.
I tend to put the product on at night and leave it on for many more hours than the bottle says. The longer you leave it on the darker the tan so I just shower the next day.
Also it's very important to moisturize everyday after to keep your tan looking nice, fresh and so the color doesn't "crack".
Most Helpful Critical Review Didn't work well for me
I would not consider myself a professional but I have been using sunless Tanner's for a few years and I'm fairly comfortable with them, my preference being mousses. I had such high hopes for this stuff because it has such good reviews but this stuff is not great. The color is it awful, it's not orange but it's a little too warm for my preference. I feel like it's skewing orange/brown. I cannot get the stuff to look good on my hands and feet. It does not matter how much I exfoliate, moisturize, blend, it always sticks on my hands in such a weird way leaving my hands patchy and dirty looking. I will say the stuff has staying power but that's not a good thing because it fades really badly, at least on me, and it doesn't matter how much you exfoliate this stuff doesn't want to come off. So you just sort of have to suck it up and look kind a dirty and patchy until it finally decides to fade away. One nice thing about it is I will say that the smell is fine. Oh and I appreciate the color guard although somehow when I went to rinse it off I missed places even though it didn't look like I had before I rinsed off the colorguard....? All in all this is a hard pass for me.

it's definitely is dark. especially if you sleep with it on but it is SO sticky sooo if you don't like feeling sticky then i'd suggest to leave it on for 4-6 hours.
Worst self tanner ever
Ulta shopper from Pennsylvania
So, i have used so many self tanners from Fake bake to St. Tropez to Loving Tan. This is by far the WORST self tanner I've ever used. When first applied it looked pretty good. Even after I washed it off it looked okay. The next day (DAY 2!!) it looked so bad! I looked like a spackled egg. It was so splotchy. I am not a beginner
with self tanner either, I've been using it for close to 10 years! So I know you need to moisturize and how to apply. Ive never had to do this before but I had to buy the self tanner remover and scrub the living daylights out of my skin and i still looked like I had some sort of skin condition. It was horrible! Please do yourself a favor and DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! I wish I wouldve seen a review like this before I bought this. It was a nightmare.
Bang for your buck

So i've used copious amounts of tanners as I yearn to be tan year round. I was initially using Bali Body but thought it was pointless to use a $32 tanner that lasted three days at the MOST. So I resorted not only to the cheaper end of the spectrum, but the self tanners that do not contain any alcohol in them. So that led me to test out the 2 ulta brand tanners, St Moriz, B.Tan, and obviously this tanologist one. St Moriz & this one had the same color payoff but this one did have a sickly gray tone to it at first but then resembled the orange/red tone of St Moriz but after my first shower the tanologist one still had its color vs st moriz which most of it washed away. So tanologist has took the cake in my tanning trials!!

I never reviews but I had to leave one for this! i've tried them all.. loving tan, bondi, BTE, ST.T, but the colors have always been *off*, either too orange, too red, too GREEN... but this one is perfect for me! it's Actually dark also! gives me that beautiful bronze color we all want. lasts about 6 days for me. wish it was longer but that's okay

was worried at first, it made me look dirty, but wow that deep tan is beautiful!!

I loved this product for a natural golden glow I didn't get streaking at all and I had luck layering it for a darker result. It went on nice you needed to buff out the lines a little longer but I don't mind cause the after results are amazing. And it was great for the face and I typically have really uneven coloring on my face it made everything an even tone. Love this product!

Great tan! Have used everything from Bondi sands/Le tan, loving tan.. salon based products.. to model co!
Great colour (have had the most comments for this when out). Also stays >1 week if you use a good rich oil based moisturiser on your bod! LOVE tanologist!

I left this on for 3 hours instead of 1 and it's one of the deepest tans I've gotten from a bottle. I wouldn't call it extra dark but they do say leave it on overnight for that. The express is kind of misleading there however 3 hours is still not bad to me. It does stay sticky for a pretty long time, that bothered me at first but then I wondered if that was what was helping it work... smells a lot like grapefruit as well. Overall I would recommend this!
Not Really "Express"
Rachel from Columbus, OH
This product is good quality. It's not streaky, the smell is relatively clean, and the color is good. But I don't know if I would call it "extra dark" unless you put multiple layers on. Also, I don't see full development until the next day, at least a full 24 hours after application, which is fine if you know what you're getting into but doesn't really live up to the 1-4 hour "express" claim. It may just be my skin (different people react differently to different tanners based on chemistry just like other products), but that's my experience with multiple uses and good skin prep. Will for sure use the rest but jury's still out for me on whether I'll repurchase or not.
I would buy this product again

I really like how it gives immediate results. The color also looks like a real tan.

So here's my solution for all the Karen's (🙄) writing reviews below...... shake the bottle good, apply lightly.... wash hands immediately and I leave this on for approximately 5 hours before taking a shower. The color payoff is a beautiful olive tan. I get compliments all the time and people can't believe it came out of a bottle. (I am EXTREMELY fair completed). I hope Ulta will continue to carry this line because it is extremely affordable compared to the tanner I was using before and additionally the smell is not your typical self tanner stinky scent. I 💕💜❤️ this product. 🏆👏🏻⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
not so good
self-tanner for life from North Louisiana
I tried this in the ultra dark but it barely did anything for me. I expected slot more color than what I got, especially since it was the ultra dark. if I have anything good to say about it, it does give u a very light tan color but not dark like it claims to be.
This product ain't it

I put this product all over my body that i saw fit for it. My legs arms & stomach are nicely tanned i guess but underneath my arms it's literally like putting glue on something and peeling it off. i wouldn't recommend

I've tried about 15 different self tanners and I've always stuck with Fake Bake Flawless Darker.. until now. AND this one is half the price of fake bake!!
The color is dark and natural. I'm pasty white so you know this is some good stuff! Also, a major plus for me- it doesn't completely fade after a shower. I left it on for a day and showered and it still looked naturally dark!
I will only be using this from now on!!
My new go-to
Melissa from West Chester, pa
I've used loving tan for YEARS, but it would only last on me for a few days tops. And I always wanted to be darker. I started using tanologist mousse and am hooked!! I seriously get a full 1 week wear out of it. You need to practice with application because YES, it's harder to see where you're applying it, even with the tint of the xtra dark. I love the Dark and xtra dark!! I am ghostly white with a yellow undertone and I find this color to be a really good shade for me. I don't find it orange AT ALL. Once the one week is up, I get about a 1/2 hour bath, then when I'm done I turn the shower on and use an exfoliating mitt (with soap) in comes right off with 0 effort.
This ain't it...

I am a huge Loving Tan fan!! Unfortunately I ran out right before I was supposed to take maternity photos, so in a pinch I bought a bottle of this Tanologist express tan and seeing as how it is much cheaper I thought I would be a happy camper. WRONG!! YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR...... The color doesn't progress well on initial application, you can't really tell how much product you have in one area and where you need to buff or blend it. Even when you prep your skin with exfoliating and applying lotion to feet/knees/elbows/fingers this stuff CLINGS to dry areas and it is NOT a pretty sight, not to mention the color itself is such a bad 'tan'.... it's much more like an orange color!! The 'tan' color finally set in 24 HOURS AFTER the application (so much for 2 hour express) and after only 3 days it is sooooo splotchy! The crease of my inner arms, the creases in my neck, and the creases of my ankles are already back to my original ivory color whereas the other parts of me have this horrid orange tan on them.... I look like an orange creamsicle! Next time I will just buy two bottles of Loving Tan to avoid this fiasco ever again!
Had higher hopes than this.. it sucks :(

I was so excited to try this product! I have very light skin and was worried it would be too dark... I actually had quite the opposite problem. There was little color pay off. I can't imagine what the light or medium tanning mousse would look like? I prepped and everything and didn't really make me tan at all, yet somehow I look blotchy. I've had better tans from L'Oréal 🤦🏻♀️

I just tried this last night and I love it. It had a great smell and was applied very evenly on me and I did not turn grey or orange! My husband even complimented on me this morning!! This honestly reminds me of Loving Tan but cheaper!!! Love this!!
Nice color but application and removal are a headache
Meglee from NJ
This tan is a beautiful deep brown color, no orange tones, and applied without any streaking or patchiness. The formula is also extremely hydrating which is nice when applying initially because it gives you plenty of time to rub the mouse is and make sure nothing was missed but it also means that it never fully dries down. I left this on for about 2 hours before rinsing simply because I could not stand the stickiness. It didnt really transfer to my clothes in this time but it just felt gross on the skin. The smell is also incredibly strong and the dha smell lingers for entire next day. Around day 6 I was ready to scrub the tan off but this stuff would not budge! So overall, a beautiful color but the stickiness and smell of application plus the headache of removal made this tan just okay. I'll use the rest of the bottle but will not repurchase.

Tried this one after years of going through different kinds of self tanners. Foams or mousse are always easier in my experience, but this one was a nightmare. Applied with a clean mitt on clean skin and the coverage was horrendous. It would "pill" up on my skin leaving residue of tiny brown flakes as I was applying it. I can't really speak to whether the color was long lasting or natural looking, only that the little bit that did apply correctly to my skin wasn't orange. After about 3 hours I washed it off because it looked terrible and didn't develop anything.

I was looking for a cheaper alternative to Loving Tan so I decided to try this guy out. Super disappointed. Loving Tan is not as spotty as this one and the tan maybe lasts a couple days. Now I'm stuck with a big bottle of this useless stuff. I guess you get what you pay for.
Not even a tan

This time great if you wanna be GRAY!! it's not even a tan and smells awful
It doesn't come off (and not in a good way)
Self tanner for 25 years from Central Valley, CA
I should have listened to the review that described this as not coming off because it doesn't. I was happy with the smell, color guard, and how quickly the color developed. I was really excited because I've been using brands that are a lot more expensive and thought I'd finally found a good replacement for them...until it started to wear off. It comes off sooooo unevenly that I can't even wear shorts (and it's 105 degrees here - not fun). I'm extremely patchy. I've been scrubbing for 3 days and can't get this stuff off (which means I can't put new stuff on). I've used my exfoliating mitt and a "tan eraser" from another brand, and it still won't come off. I'm giving it one last shot today, and then I've got to put more on because jeans in this heat is killing me. I'll stick with my Fake Bake. It smells great, dries quickly, gives immediate color, and fades evenly.
Best tan ever!!

I've been using self tanner for over 10 years and nothing was a favorite but this is a game changer! Usually I have to reapply tanner 3x before getting the perfect deep tan but after just one hour I was already at my goal! Highly recommend!
Absolutely AMAZING color pay-off 👏🏻🏆💯
DC from Southern California
First off, this stuff smells AMAZING! Maybe some of you got a bad bottle but this has a very good scent to it, not your typical self tanner smell. I am extremely fair and the color result is a beautiful olive tan. No orange color whatsoever. The price is also very good for the amount of product you get. I absolutely ❤️ this self tanner. I have had a million compliments on the natural looking tan that I achieved from this product. I highly recommend 💯%. 🏆❤️💕👏🏻🙋♀️
