While chestnuts are roasting on an open fire, you may want to prepare for Jack Frost nipping at your nose. And your cheeks, forehead and lips. Cold, dry, winter air can do a number on your skin by drying it out and leaving it feeling wind-burned as you zip down the ski hill.
Fear not, my little snow bunnies, there are solutions! Celebrity makeup artist Lisa Mirante and regular contributor to CBS Watch! magazine shares her secrets to gorgeous winter skin.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
News flash: Drinking a lot of water hydrates your skin. I know, right? This may seem like a no-brainer, but Mirante says many people don't think about chugging water when temps drop.
“In the winter, you're thinking you don't need that water,” she says. However, your skin will reward you with a healthy glow if you stick to your eight-glasses-a-day plan year-round. Also, add to your routine Evian Mineral Water Spray. Mirante says it not only moistures your skin, but it also has a hidden trick. “It's actually used to set makeup, which most people don't realize,” she shares. Keep one at your desk to mist your face all day long.
Also, consider saying no to overdosing on hot coffee in the winter. “The caffeine dehydrates your skin even more,” says Mirante.
The Sun's Still There, Even if You
Don't See It
Those pesky UV rays. They can get you even on winter's gloomiest days. Make sure you're using a moisturizer with a minimum SPF 15 year-round, says Mirante. Try Juice Beauty Green Apple SPF 15 Moisturizer. Not only will it guard you from the sun you can't see, its organic apple and lemon extract will give you a little dose of summer in the middle of winter.
If your dry skin is really parched, you may want to consider giving it an extra dose of hydration overnight. Dermalogica's Age Smart Overnight Repair Serum goes to work while you sleep, increasing that glowing skin effect by morning.
Your Pucker Needs Protection
Dry lips are synonymous with winter, which is why you need to stock up on lip balm as if you're preparing for the apocalypse. Try Burt's Bees Rejuvenating Lip Balm with Acai Berry to moisturize and give your lips a dose of free-radical-fighting antioxidants.
For the guys, there's Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm with SPF 25. There's nothing girly or shiny about it and it comes in the “manly” flavor of mint and shea butter. (But, ladies, there are flavors like grapefruit and ginger, too, so feel free to pick one up for yourself as well.)
