Wedding season is upon us, and in addition to the cake, music and flowers, you've got to decide on a fabulous hairstyle to complement that gorgeous gown. No matter if you're a traditional or a modern bride, or whether you're entrusting your wedding-day beauty to the professionals or going it alone, we've got the scoop on the latest looks and products to help you get to happily ever after (well, at least, for your hair).
Soft and Glamorous
When it comes to bridal 'dos, it's easier than you think to re-create
the hairstyles seen on the red carpet or runway. We checked in with
Rusk stylist Sherri Jessee, who shared tips for the haute hair recently
seen at NYC Fashion Week.
Try this easy do-it-yourself, soft wavy style, which is simple to create on your own with the right tools and products. (Hint: Pass this along to bridesmaids, moms or any other wedding guests looking for a little prewedding primping advice.)
Step 1: Dry hair with Conair's Infiniti Pro Dryer, which dries hair quickly while producing maximum volume. Use an S-shaped brush that's ideal for blow-drying, like Ulta's Black Velvet Tunnel Vent Brush. Its lightweight design features large holes for quick drying.
Step 2: Distribute Rusk Gleam Lusterizing Crème (in-store only) evenly throughout your hair to give instant shine and keep locks looking healthy throughout the big day.
Step 3: Dry each section and secure it in rollers—try Conair's Ion Shine Instant Heat Hair Setter. Allow the set to cool and remove rollers, resulting in fantastic body and super-shiny curls.
Bold and Sexy
Watch out: bridal hair is getting big! "Recently, some popular
Hollywood starlets have been showing up on the red carpet with big,
sexy Brigitte Bardot-inspired up-dos," says expert hairstylist and
makeup artist Donna Spinelli of Amazing Face & Luscious Locks in
Montclair, N.J. Inspired by Tinseltown, her brides have been requesting
this look that she says "is very sexy, high couture and dramatic." With
a little work (and a few great products), anyone can achieve a thick
and glorious mane that makes a statement. Here's how:
Step 1: Use a dry shampoo, which does double duty to clean oily roots and add body and which also supports root teasing (start with one-day unwashed hair). Mist Oscar Blandi Pronto Invisible Volumizing Dry Shampoo Spray 8 to 12 inches away from your roots (flip over, then shake your hair out). "It makes your hair feel fresh and clean and adds so much sexy body," Spinelli says.
Step 2: Next is the wedding hair classic: a hot roller set. "This is an amazing way to add huge curls and body into anyone's hair," says Spinelli, who recommends Conair's Volume Hairsetter. "These heat up in a minute and are so easy to use," she says. Allow them to cool before taking them out.
Step 3: Once the rollers are out, work in a volumizing mist—try Phyto Phytovolume Actif Volumizing Spray for Fine & Limp Hair—while teasing and back-combing to give your hair size and texture. Do a deep part to the side and a classic twist, keeping volume at the crown and back of the head. Or, keep curls tight and pile for high, dramatic volume, securing each with a bobby pin. Finish with an extra-hold hairspray, like ULTA Ultra Hold Hairspray, that will ensure the style lasts and that your hair will stay looking great throughout your big day.
Playful and Flirty
Brides desiring a classy yet fun feel will love this loose and chic
hairstyle. "It's a classic shape that looks like she could have done it
herself, but with more of a luxurious twist," says Redken stylist
Giovanni Giuntoli, who created the ultra-flattering, youthful look for
wedding-gown designer Christos' presentation at Spring/Summer 2011
Bridal Fashion Week.
Brides who are handy with a hair dryer could attempt this on their own, (let Redken's genius products, available at ULTA stores, help along the way), but for a more polished look, it's best to trust the professionals (to book a personal prewedding consultation, locate the nearest ULTA salon here.
Step 1: Blow-dry hair with Redken Aerate 08 Bodifying Cream-Mousse (in-store only) to add volume, and then mist with Redken Spray Starch 15 Versatile Ironing Spray (in-store only) and flat-iron the ends.
Step 2: Depending on your hair type, mist the crown with Redken Wool Shake 08 Gel-Slush Texturizer (in-store only), then gather at the top and twist it into a knot.
Step 3: Finish with Redken Fashion Work 12 Versatile Working Spray (in-store only) for hold. For this style, it's more important to gather the hair loosely into the shape than to brush and pull it tight to the head.
